Former Cs Mapper Goes Ns Mappig

VulcVulc Join Date: 2003-10-04 Member: 21418Members
Hey.

I'm a former CS mapper, but after played NS a lot now, i feel that it maybe is more fun to map to NS.
I have maped for CS in about 3 years now, so you maybe understand that's kinda boring

Anyway, I've done some reading on this NS forum and I find the people helping and kind, that's why I'm posting
this, to post my name to you people.

Hope you'll like what I will make for the lovely(!) NS.

Over an' Out //Vulc

I never understood why people still play CS so much when RS series ( all of them) is so much better.

Well I pld CS from beta 5.2 till end of 1.5 and I pld it over R6 / RS / and Rshield simply because I think CS is a better game for me. Imo CS was much faster and had a higher learning curve also with it having alot more (understatement) servers available to the players I dont understand why people would choose R6/RS over CS unless they prefer the slow more realistic gameplay which is great if they do its all personaly preferance.

One CS Mapper getting influenced and mapping for NS? Good. A few CS Mappers join in, Ok. A group of CS Mappers join in NS Mapping, no way. I remember When Co_ was first announced, "Its like cs" and "cs mappers will move in" are some things people said on IRC and maybe even the forums. Lets hope that not many people will follow Vulcs footsteps. Let him be the first of a few, not many. Good luck.

    Well, welcome to the forums!
Maybe we should only help CS mappers if they first create a ns_map
No no, better idea, we use psycological war methods...

Hey Vulc, you want to do something new, something different, right? You want to evolve to a real good mapper that can handle entity counts and lighting like the official NS mappers! You are sick of this CS style stuff and levels over levels that just confuse everyone. You want to make large levels full of surprises and atmosfear ™. You want to get away from the all day sunshine CS maps and do something that you can say of: "This map is balanced, because it is not another lame CS map, but a NS map with equal hive distances, clever siege ranges and the right amount of res nodes, because I read the f...ing mapping guidelines and have the knowledge to do so! That's why I NEVER ever will make any map beginning with c again in my life!"

    Hi, and thx everybody.

Yes, I think that the CS maps are boring, because all the CS players wants kinda simple maps that's fun, but other hand in NS it's the way around, that more detailed and surprising maps are fun. (It's so for me at least )
And I will start with an real ns_ map, nothing else mathers (Metallica, huh..?). And if you don't like CS mappers influencing NS, then i'm sorry to let you know that CS mapping ain't fun anymore for me, so when changing mod to map to, I hope to learn something really fun and something NEW(!) (and of course give You something fun too, i hope..)
Pictures, of course I will give you guys pictures, after all, I've planned my work. But that freaking school is in my way sometimes
And I will start to first read and react before I get my hand on this delicious piece of map I have on my paper.
Hope that I get a lot of time to mapping.

Actually NS has a similar situation to CS in that most server operators prefer to put 'fun' custom maps in the rotation rather than proper ones. Just be aware of that.

Not to turn this into a RS debate, but I've found that especially with the new one (Raven Shield) the learning curve is much higher and real CQB tactics win the day over any CS-quake fest you usually see. I started with CS when it first came out (the very first incarnation) back in the day of cs_Desert being a primary map, you ahd to buy seperate ammo for each gun, etc. I forgot what build I finally stopped at (quite a ways down the road) I'm thinking shortly after that snowy-office complex map came out. RS has a great feel, more options, equipment, and most importantly (aside from being leaps and bounds prettier) each weapon is suited for specific roles, yet can be ultradeadly given the right shot - I really can't stand HP systems.

Of course I'll start with an ns_ map, I haven't even played any co_ maps, and I don't really need to know what
that is, so I don't get anything in the way in my minds

Yes, I know.. As i said precisly, co_ maps is what I think are the "fun" maps, because of me just playing ns_ maps, I don't know what co_ maps are, I can guess.

But ns_ it is all the way!

so you are making a serious ns_ map? and no, 'fun' maps aren't co_maps. fun maps are gimmicky and usually very ugly maps that don't follow the normal layouts for ns maps whereas co_ maps are just another natural selection mode.

EdgeCrusher, if you believe that the majority of server admins play fun maps only, maybe you need to find some new servers... Really, fun maps were just for the end of 1.04 when all the offical maps had been played dry to the bone and people needed something different to play. Very few 2.0x servers play fun maps (that is also partially because no fun maps actually WORK anymore).
As for custom maps, yes, they will of course be used less than offical maps, but they still can be quite popular. Just go for it, if its good, it will be played, if not, tweak it or try again.

most fun maps never really worked that well in 1.04...
  • VulcVulc Join Date: 2003-10-04 Member: 21418Members
Yes I'm going to do a serious ns_ map, no fun maps or anything like that. I want it to be nice, but it will not be HUGE, just a normal big map, to start with.
Pictures coming up this week of my art so far, I hope.. it depends on the school.

    Take care!

i used to map for cs n dod and ns seems challengin to map for those visually impaired, individuals who can't visualize nething in their mind.
