Major Lag Spikes

Ns 2.0, why?
Okay, to be blunt, NS 2.0 gives me lag spikes at random intervals for no reason. This never happened with NS 1.0, nor any other game. Can anyone help? And yes I am defragging tomorrow, but I highly doubt that this is my problem.

Yea dude i get some random lag spikes as well. What are you specs?

    Mine are:
    P4 2 gighz
    256 RDRAM

    cable modem

I experience it in CS with steam as well. Anyone got any ideas. Im guessing its the memory department for me thats what I am upgrading. Any other ideas??

Please private message me if upgradin your RAM helps, as I have plenty of RAM, just low grade. Perhaps this will be good enough proof that we need better RAM.

Rate doesn't seem to do the job. I lowered it as far as 1500 and still no go. It seems to happen during battle like 80% of the time. This leads me to beleive it is a computer issue, but what? Did Flayra change something about NS that would change the specs?

    ok, you say 'lag'

    lag = letancy = PING!

your system specs (out side of modem and ISP) should NOT effec it in ANY WAY

ok, run with net_graph 3 turned on, tell us choke, loss, and ping at these times (and FPS I guess)

and as I remember you want to RAISE rate....

I am willing to bet that your choke sky rockets at the same time.

oh, and if it is FPS jumps then we rethink

Turn off NumLock and CapsLock; I believe (someone correct me if this is totally out there) that Steam has an issue sometimes with these being on. I had a problem just like what you are describing (with similar computer stats , except my graphics card is old), and that (I think) fixed it.

Ok.. u tryed an Ad-ware scan? Virus scan? Spyware scan?

    www.lavasoft.de

    http://security.kolla.de/

These are very good Ad-ware/Spyware scanners.

Make sure to update em first tho.

It is definately my ping. It skyrockets to 1500 during these spikes. I do not run on steam so no go. I'm guessing that Jasp has hit the nail on the head, because my sister has Kazaa on our computer, and everyone knows what that means.

The good news - it works. I had roughly 350 ad programs on my computer. I deleted them all and got no spikes.
The bad news - it deletes several files vital to programs running. Does anyone know where I can get a list of files to not delete or to delete? Oh, I am using the ad-aware program.
