I have a Compaq, and although I like it I must say its definatly going to me my last.
As for you: your compaq should have come with a recovery disk. Although this isnt as good as reformating it will still remove anything malicious you may have on your comp. As for saving things, about the only way you can save your stuff with with some kind of removabel media (i.e. DVDs, CD-Rs etc.) or an external hard drive.
A certain episode with Infinitum comes to mind... The best defense against spyware/adserver software is to avoid clicking yes on every single dialogue that pops up. I've never had anything but cookies, which were harmless without the accompanying programs.
