I heard about this game at a Tribes forum, in a topic where another member was talking about how he'd want a strategy game to play. I went to to the Natural Selection website and got interested, so I'm going to be buying Half-Life in a couple of days.
My question, is the hard to get into? I read some information at the site and got confused. Is it easier once you just jump in and play?
Edit: Wrong forum, sorry.

As for commanding, it's a good idea that you play as Marines for a while to get an idea of what certain stuff does. Also you should check out a commander strategy guide. I think there's one at nonoobs.com.
Savage is a new game that's a pretty good RTS/FPS game. You might want to check that out.

My suggestion is just to read up in the new players forum to get the basics down, and then jump in a game. I would *not* reccomend getting into a server and saying "hi, i just got this game, what should I do". That may cause a less than friendly reaction from the people on your team. If you are aliens, run towards concentrations of circles, that will get you into the action fastest. If you are marines, just run towards any waypoint your commander gives you, or just follow other marines around.
Good luck, and welcome to NS!
I'd personally recommend the aliens first actually, because it feels like you get cut more slack on their side and you can pretty much go nuts without damaging them as much as the marines would suffer if you did the same thing on their team ^^;
If you can get a lan together with some friends or find one of the supposed 'newbie' servers then experience is the best teacher really <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
just try and make sure you have a rough idea of what building does what and what unit does what and you should be somewhat ok-ish =s
NS can be hard to get the hang of, because you truly do depend on teamwork. The best thing to learn quickly isn't how to frag well, but how to help out your team. You'll win a lot of a games if you learn how to be a builder alien and use your initial resources to help your team establish expansions.
If you do something wrong, and people yell at you, don't take it personally. Just ask how you were supposed to do whatever you did, and there'll surely be someone who's nice enough to explain it to you in proper english.
My #1 tip for a new player: Stick around near another player. You can probably manage to steal a kill or two in this way even if you aren't good, and you can learn a lot from someone with experience <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Anyway, welcome.. I was a forUmer here before, forgot my password :'(
My advice I can give for being an obedient soldier and a cunning alien:
Marine/Frontiersman:
Follow your commander's orders and waypoints. This is foremost important. If you played any RTS game such as starcraft, you know you want your grunts to respond to your orders percisely. So be a good grunt, follow orders.
Also, do not engage alienbuildings unless you have proper backup and the commander's attention. ALL aliens (except dead ones) in the game are warned immediately to the attack and will respond, especially if it is an resource chamber or hive you are attacking.
And of course, look up and around when entering every room.
Aliens/Khaara:
In the beginning, your objective is to either recon/slow down the marines as a skulk or to put up RT (resource chamber/tower) as a gorge. I would not recommend gorging on the first run as aliens... Start a LAN game for yourself and run around as a skulk, remembering the room names (appears in the lower left corner above the hp/armor). When you atleast have a vague idea of how the maps are set up, you are ready for gorge. For advanced gorge tactics, follow/guard a gorge you know is good.
As a skulk, (lowest life form) never run straight at marines... Remeber that all you have is bite and parasite (consult manual for info on techs... May be rather outdated), so try to start all confrontation with an ambush or engage from very close range, circle strafing.
Smooth-looking yellow (and red when you have scent of fear) circles are enemy Marines which are parasited. Try to use this to your advantage. (set up ambushes)
There are 4 other life forms as aliens, all with very unique abilities and specific roles in the team. Follow these players and learn from their behavior.
And most of all, have fun, and don't give up!

Welcome to the game <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Reading material about the game (discussion about strategies, stories from the game etc) is damn near impossible unless you understand how the game works already. Trying to play the game without knowing anything about it is... possible. But it's not advised, because it makes your life un-necessarily difficult (not to mention your teammates'!)
The thing about NS is, since it's such a complex game there's a lot of background information you need to know. Fortunately, it's not difficult to learn this information, and it can (and should) be done offline. Well, maybe not offline, but off-game.
NS is complex because it's a hybrid of real time strategy and first person shooter. You can jump right into it as much as you can jump right into Starcraft or Command and Conquer. The trick is to think of it as a first person real time strategy game; that way it doesn't seem so strange to have tech trees and upgrades and structures and stuff.
56K should be fine. back in 1.0x, when the server operations were horrible unoptimised, a 56k-re could be shouted off the server as everybody's pings suddenly rocketed to 500.
thankfully, that doesnt happen much these days. make sure you find yourself a local freindly server and you'll do fine
Grab a coke and read on, newbeh! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yes, for the weapons, no for the ammo. The only way you can recieve weapons other than your standard default weapons you spawn with (Light Machine Gun and Pistol), is to have the commander drop them for you. Technically, when another marine with a weapon dies, he'll drop the weapon, which will remain for about 30 seconds, and you could grab it from his body, but this doesn't happen too often.
As for the ammo, yes, the commander can drop ammo for you, or you can hold down your "use" key while facing the armory building, and it will dispense ammo for whatever weapon you are currently using. This takes no resources to do, whereas dropping ammo for you does, so using the armory is always preferable if close by.
I hope this helps, and welcome to Natural Selection...
