i posted this on the hl2 forums but got the wrong responses. it pertains to half life 2 but it seems interesting enough for here.

Weapons have two models - the in-view model and the world model (seen in 3rd person). You can set a separate FOV to render the in-view model if you'd like. Our artists find it easier to get the weapons to look the way they want with this feature.

i never really paid attention to this answer, but from what it says it sounds like you can set a different fov to the first person weapon compared to the fov of the screen, am i reading this right? could you do this in hl1? i've heard complaints about weapons not looking right due to the fov so will this fix the issue?

If you have DoD look at the new weapon models for v1 in HLMV - they're all stretched and distorted to counteract this negative FoV effect. And sure, they look better for it, but it's not a change anyone would ever notice unless they knew about it. There's nothing wrong with the current FoV at all.

well with the ability to change the fov of just the gun would it make it so you wouldn't have to distort the weapons?

ya i heard about this a while ago, and did my little dance of happy. the problem with distorting the gun to counter HLs 90 degree fov, is that if the gun goes into any position besides straight forward, its no longer distorted in the proper way. think the python in the original HL. when it comes up for reload, its like "WTH... the gun looks dumb as hell".
