i managed to get steam working on my linux dedicated server(ie server only)
all i did was install the steam server patch on top of my old hlds install
    updated normal stuff
copied the ns folder into the steam game dir
    ran it with game NS

i was not able to see if i could join as i couldnt figure out how to get to steam to run the client side, but it did show up in server browser correctly. also it was version 1.4

:EDIT: I just finished dl-ing Steam full cs1.6 cache version from FilePlanet. it detected all my mods and maps and made caches of them for steam. i dont know if it works yet, but looks like it will :EDIT:

:EDIT2: After I moved fmod.dll to the half-life dir, ns worked, but had all the same bugs as other people. but i let steam do all the mod conversion. np's there. i only had to copy the dll. the bugs i saw we're pretty small. i was still getting 72fps. the fonts should be able to be fixed in a patch, along with a good background, and that wierd gamma thing. the right click menu also looks like a simple thing to fix(fonts again). all and all im very impressed with this release. i still think most peoples problems with steam, have nothing to do with steam. but most people are going to disagree:EDIT2:

I got steam the first 10 mins (with the small file)

let it run overnight and it install everything.

    Problems with NS.

Orginal NS wouldn't run, it would try to run CS.

Now NS will run. Get a constant error message in ~window unknown command ex_maxerrordistance.
suggestion someone gave me was to use alias ex_maxerrordistance to stop seeing that.

On one server every 3 sec everyone would pop down and then pop back up.

somepoeple would end up stucking in stuff and start rising up.

Also the UI is garbled. but if you wait for the pop up help you can still navigate somewhat.

Commanders view would have a massive fps slowdown.

that is my experience so far.

Here's my steps that I took. The ingame GUI is still messed up...but everyone who plays NS via steam seems to have that problem. I downloaded steaminstall_cs.exe as that is the one steam installer file that worked for me

Create C:/Steam/Steamapps/half-life...(or where ever you have steamapps folder located.)

Install NS2.0 to C:/Steam/Steamapps/half-life/ns folder (or whereever steam is installed to)

Copy over old Config.cfg into C:/Steam/Steamapps/half-life/Ns (or wherever it is located) from your Old halflife/ns folder.

Type in <i> <b> alias "ex_maxerrordistance" ""</b> </i> in game console(by hitting esc) in game to allievate the error of unkowncommand:ex_maxerrordistance message that floods your console.

Your HL ingame Resoultion gets reset to 640x480 when you Install Steam so be sure and change it back to how you like it.

    thnx 'dragons', will do.

Still know about the 'reliable channel overflow' problem? Or is that caused by maxerrordistance?

I recall back in the hl 1008 patch that the reliable channel overflow problem was cause by a poor support issue to the ATI graphics chip. Basicly, anyone using an ATI card using openGL got this error till valve fixed it with another patch. Maybe valve created the same blunder again? Try D3D mode and see if you get the reliable channel overflow message again.

I think it's caused by the Maxerrordistance flooding your console. I have not gotten since inputting the command...I hear it works without the quotes too from some people... I tried putting that command in my config.cfg and also in userconfig.cfg like other people say but still have to input it, so i guess all that is working for me is the "temporary fix".

Anyone tried Commander mode yet? Notice the nice lag while in the chair?
Notice the cannot load sprite thing? Thats what causes the lag. Just copy another sprite file and rename it to tech0s.spr or something (forgot exact name) That should cause less slowdown while comming
  • SandmanSandman Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9870Members
ok, these little tricks are helping, thx guys. Here is what I got it down to.

Put this: alias "ex_maxerrordistance" "" in your autoexec.cfg. This is the only way I found to get this to load every time and seems to be stopping the reliable channel overflow problem so far.

In your ns\sprites\techtree folder, copy and rename any one of your tech?0s.spr's to tech0s.spr. This seems to be stopping the low fps problem with the commander.

But now, I have a small slue of sprites that are not loading because they are not there. It doesn't seem to be much of a problem but I just wanted to point this out. Here is a screenshot of them.

most of those sprites are in your sprite folder...when you install NS. Make a copy of your config.cfg so you won't lose your settings and reinstall your NS...or if you still have your old halflife/ns folder make a copy of your sprites from that old folder into your new one. IT is just best if you reinstall NS to your steam folder.

I dunno what's going on Steam seems to be another story everytime i get on. That maxerror comand doesn't seem to be coming back. I have it at the bottom of my config.cfg and also in userconfig.cfg that i created. It doesn't seem to be comnig back, but now my Ns keeps locking up after every match...again. I tried reinstalling NS a couple of times.....

    Hello,

After applying the stuff listed in this thread things don't seem too broken anymore. Sure out of the box the maxerror thing was a pain, and the cmdr gui was laggy till I fixed the 0s sprite as detailed above.

The sprites thing listed above did fix the lag I was seeing in the cmdr gui but at the same time it pretty much hosed the build menus. They still work but blank build icons are now populated and it's not too clean. Wish we could find a real blank sprite to repalce that with, because other than that NS seems pretty playable under steam and the server seems stable as well.

Anyone have a better blank sprite?

Here is an example of what I got when I copied tech20s.spr to tech0s.spr:

    SOLUTION!!!

instead of copying a file from the techtree dir use the blank.spr from the sprites dir.

    so:
    copy
    half-life\ns\sprites\blank.spr
    to
    half-life\ns\sprites\techtree\tech0s.spr

I suppose if you really wanted to remove all the missing sprites seen in the above message from sandman you could copy this same blank over the other missing sprites as well.

this seems to have worked for me... pls post if this works for you..

Since I don't hardly commander....and since I don't remeber that problem the 5 seconds I jumped in the comm chair, I am just going to hold off until they come out with the next client side patch.

Ok, I created a temp fix for most of the steam ns problems. The only thing it doesn't fix is the blured gui menu but temporarily cures most of the other issues.

Please make a backup of your ns\sprites\hud.txt before installing this and let me know how it works for you.

Let's try to keep this near the top so most can read through it without having to post more of the same "I have this problem with Steam" thread.

Sorry about your new found problem but do keep in mind, this is just a <u>unofficial temp fix</u>. Hopefully, there will be an official update soon and all our NS with steam headaches will be cured.

I think 3/4 of the problems are with Steam itself. Only 1/4 seems to be with the need for them to get a patch to integrate Ns. After all, with our unoffical solutions, we have most of the problems fixed already....People in my TFC clan keep having problems with Steam on a 'daily' basis....meaning for several days it works, but then the next day it doesn't....without them changing anything. I wish we could just have a nice <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> devour the whole steam project and have Valve stick with Won....wishful thinking works for me. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Also: Make sure to put this in autoexec.cfg <!--c1--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->alias "ex_maxerrordistance" ""<!--c2--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->
Then, make sure that the option "Something Particles (For Fast Computers)" In Options> Multi> Advanced is OFF, steam kinda turns this on randomly..
    Check the video mode, make sure it isnt 32bpp <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
