    I searched before I posted this thread and I didn't see any comprehensive newbie commander guides, only specific strategies.

    The prices keep changing in the beta versions. Don't worry about it too much. Instead, concentrate on general issues (number of ips, res expansion, when to start upgrading, etc.).

    The guides in nonoobs seem a little outdated..
    Anyway, where can I find overviews of the original maps (not sprites, images)?

    Start a solo LAN game to figure out prices, learn how to use lerks and JPS, and learn the maps. Spending about an hour on a solo game is boring, but it does help let you get a grasp on the layout of any map.

    You really can't be a top notch comm without first becoming a good marine and alien player. as you play both sides you learn the maps, abilities, and equipment a lot more thoroughly than you would when reading a manual. Just play a bunch of games first, until you feel comfortable, and then jump in the chair, if you go to lan games with friends or people you know, that's a good time to learn how to comm, they won't want to kill you if you screw up.

    just by watcing i have learned that a few differences between good commanders and bad commanders.
    0. (yeah, i took this for granted and just remembered) USE A MIC! SPEAK LOUD AND CLEAR. ENUNCIATE!
    1. unlike most RTS, YOU MUST GO OUT OF YOUR CUBBYHOLE BASE AND GET RESOURCES
    2. occupy a hive. NEVER let them take 3 hives... if they do, then simple skulks can take out your base efficiently.
    3. supply your troops. give them medpacks when far away. it takes alot of time to walk across the map... also shotties near the beggining of the game MAY be a good investment. since more firepower= more kills, less loss= more res from killing= domination.
    4. a million turrets by themselves can't hold anything. damage is done by player. turrets are for delaying. therefore, never leave base for long (ie, send entire army to take hive and leave base undefended.) unfortunately, sometimes a commander can't spare one marine to stay back to defend. therefore, the solution is PHASE GATES. a must have to reinforce an area before aliens take it out, and for defending and resupplying.
    5. upgrades are important. they allow you to kill faster.
    5.5. (yes, added in another again...) you don't need to defend resource towers if your enemy can't get to them. blocking / flanking is probably more important than defense in some cases...
    6. 2-3 offense chambers- medpak fuel your soldiers. more oc's- use a seige.
    7. observatories are very useful. pings, motiondetecting, and when the time comes, the distress beacon.
    8. heavy armor is good defense. immune to spore gas and can be weilded and there's an armory nearby.
    9. turrets are for blocking. not prototype labs, armories, cc, and other such. (well... in most circumstances...)
    10. soldeirs need to listen to commander.
    11. stacked mines can kill onoses.... or is it oni?
    12. parasited parties should be remade if resources allow for such waste.
    13. tell n00bs not to backstep. sidestep and circle.
    14. weild everyone. not just heavies, if convinient.

    Basically if you think about what you are doing then you can only get better each game you comm.
    Try new things and ignore people who are whining.
    Learn to differentiate between who's whining and who's giving helpful advice
    Read as much as possible about the game, it all helps
    Don't worry if you lose, it happens
    Sometimes you can't win because your rines arn't good enought and constantly get slaughtered don't take this too hard
    On the other hand sometimes your team will win because they are all gods don't think you're the worlds greatest comm if this happens.

    Play play play and never leave the chair even if its going really badly see the game out. (I whimped out in a couple of my first attempts and felt really bad about it later)
