Savage Anyone?

I just got an e-mail telling me to go buy Savage. I really like the look of it, anyone here played it at all? It got a B in a few reviews, but I've got conflicting stories about it. Please help me to decide whether or not to further impoverish myself <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> .

You got an eMail telling you to buy Savage? Neat. "Go buy Savage, scurvy dog. NOW!"
If you want it, by all means, go buy it. It's probably going to be fun, at least for a few weeks.

I heard it doesn't have voice comm. I can't live without voice comm.

    Thats a HUGE disadvantage. I'm not sure I want it anymore <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

I don't know. It looks pretty cool. If it is what it says it is, I'd buy it. Then, what are the odds that a game actually is exactly what I think it is? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Jeez. the lack of voice comm is one of its allures to me, now. I can't <i>tell</i> you how much the voice comm system in half-life pisses me right off. All the HLSS, the spam, the yelling, the annoyingness.....voicecomm is ruining online games as we know it.

I can live without it. Easily.

*EDIT* Oh yeah. And I'm gonna buy the game. That too <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Would you mind posting back here when you do? I really would like to know how it plays.

I've played the beta and can answer any of your questions.

How does it play? I'm going to ramble this off since it's a very general question. Well, the combat has a combination of a simple but important hit/block melee system and a ranged weapon system. Ranged weapons are upgraded along four distinct paths. For humans the upgrade paths are as follows: normal (hunting bow, crossbow, marksman bow), chemical (flame thrower, mortars, rocket launchers), electric (discharger, flux gun, pulse cannon), and magnetic (repeater, scattergun, coil rifle). I forget the tech paths for the Beasts, but ranged weapons include things like a lightning wand and fireballs. Then you can get upgrades that for instance increase your stamina for a given period of time. (like adrenaline) Movement in the game consists of running and sprinting for humans, (the latter of which uses stamina) and running and leaping with beasts (the latter of which uses stamina). On top of weapon upgrades, you can get unit upgrades. For humans the upgrade path for units goes like this: nomad, savage, legionnaire. Each upgrade consists of more hitpoints, which you can also get from getting more experience points and leveling up. However, a nomad is faster than a legionnaire. You can also play as a Ballista or Catapult, which are mainly used to take down structures. Beast unit upgrades include: scavanger, stalker, predator, summoner, and behemoth. (the latter of which is used mainly to take down structures since it's so huge but so very slow) In general, the commander upgrades these units for resources, but the player has to buy these units and weapons to use them. Players get gold for killing other people and NPCs, (as well as experience) or the commander can give them gold. Commanders can also set a player as a officer that heals himself and others in an area around them. Officers can also give orders to those units around him.

So, it's really average RTS gameplay in a very unique and interesting setting with average FPS (usually deathmatch style) gameplay. It's very strange to go from bow and arrows to rocket launchers, but since this is in the future, I suppose it makes some sense.

    Any specific questions?

d00d, you can just mute people who are spamming annoying crap.

That's what irritated me about that article a while back (on GameSpy, I think) discussing the implications of voicecom when it was first being implemented. The only bad thing they had to say about it was that you couldn't mute people, and that this was a crippling disadvantage. Despite the fact that you <b>can</b> mute people.

    ...

Gettings back on topic, Savage doesn't strike me as being worth my time. I haven't heard enough interesting information about it.

My friend just got a copy of Savage and we had a 6 person lan checking out the game. the experience? somewhat like ns in the fact its a fps/rts well also add in 3rd person.. but as a player you can level up and you must fight npc's for gold for upgrades for your self. there is a 10k cap on the amount of gold a single player can posses and i believe there is over flow to the comm. the netcode could use some tweaking but not too much, they need too add new animations for the players for gathering gold and building. to help build as a normal player all you do is swing at the building, to gather blood rock you swing at it til it tells you to take it back. The game it self seems like wc3 but w/regular players instead of grunts - the peons are actually npc's that the comm can control. From what ive been hearing it has great mod support w/the sdk on the way- some people are calling it "the next halflife"- the engine renders the enviroment beatifully but the models are somewhat lacking. I consider it a great game and im considering in buying it.

The developers of Savage have expressed their desire for voice communication. We may see this implemented in a patch. We can only hope.

Also, I do not believe this game is worth $50 if that's the price it's going at. I advise everyone not to buy it until it drops to at most $40.

Buy it online... it's only $40 from S2 directly (<a href='http://www.s2games.com/savage' target='_blank'>HERE</a>). It's worth it. Feels a lot different from NS but some shared elements/tactics. Pretty cool IMHO. YMMV.

What I'm hearing is a general liking for the game, but distain over the fact it is more deathmatch kill oriented. What I'd like to know is if the game can be played from a teamplay perspective, like marines are, more than doubling their power with two or more people working together. I am really not in for another rambo man game; just dont fancy it.

With the news about its very potent Moddable aspects however, it seems to be rather promising to just buy it for the future mods.

Apparently the melee combat is really simplistic and the game really has no depth.

In smaller games it's still possible to do alot of damage just by yourself. If you start hitting a building in their base by yourself in a large game, you're pretty much dead.

If you want mods get UT2004, HL2, or maybe even BF1942 or Halo PC. I wouldn't look to buy this game for the mods even though there may be some.

I've played against some good melee fighters that use attacking, blocking, strafing, sprinting, and leaping quite well as they took down the players around them. It's certainly has more depth than melee in NS and look how fun THAT is.
