    O_o
I got it so that it shows up in my games menu, but when I use the server menu to join a server (keep in mind that EVERYTHING is downloaded for steam) it says that it is unavailable at the time.

I had the same problem....it tries to launch ns using counter strike. Instead go the the GAMES menu and right click on Natural Selection and you will see the Gordon Freeman screen...From there select servers and do a search...any game you join from there will work.

How? I tried everything and nothing seems to work.
  • KnightAzulKnightAzul Join Date: 2003-08-20 Member: 20006Members
I tried the same (Game Menu, right click on Natural Selection) and get "Disconected. Client sent drop" every time.
    From the NS web page:

If you want to run NS through Steam before it's officially supported, select fmod.dll and the ns folder in your Half-life directory, and copy them to your Steam\SteamApps\\half-life directory. You may see crashes or weird problems with it, but the initial reports are good.

    Did you do this first?

What happens if I try to connect to a non-steam server by adding the IP? Will it even work?

Yes, NS works perfect on Steam. It gives you better fps, and looks overall better. Some of the rightclick menu's are a bit twisted, but they'll hopefully be fixed <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> .

I'm going to assume that if 2.1 can arrive before WON goes down, then that will be the major Steam conversion patch. If it can't, then Flayra is going to have to release a seperate patch soley to convert to Steam or he'll maybe save some 2.1 changes for 2.2.

Only thing I don't like is that Steam scales the graphics, ie the Hives display stays as large in 1024x768 as it would be if you were running 640x480 so it takes up a larger portion of the screen.

I think the VGUI menus would be easy to fix, so hopefully Flayra can put it in 2.1 because WON is supposed to go away very very soon.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Steam doesn't suck. It might just be my imagination, but I think NS looks better in Steam, sans that scaling thing.

    Yeah right.

My brother once downloaded steam to play CS and it skrewed up my computer.
Some programs kept crashing all the time and my computer was very slow.

    Uninstall fixed the problem.

So **** with steam, I stick on All Seeing Eye.

The original estimate was 2 weeks, but Valve said that it will probably be longer.

I haven't been able to play NS on steam, it's not even on the list.

I tried adding -game ns in the command line of HL, but that didn't seem to work, and the thing says I got a different cl_dll.dll

Copy the NS directory so that it's under [Steam-dir]\SteamApps\email@something\Half-Life

    Then restart Steam.

The only problem for me are the screwed ns menus, some missing text on hud and the spam in console about ex_maxerrordistance cvar...

Hope to see a patch soon

That's exactly what I did and it worked fine. Make sure to bring fmod.dll over from the old Half-LIfe folder otherwise it won't work.

I'd imagine 2.1 will make ns more compatible with steam.
  • BuGiBuGi Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5283Members
I can play ns on steam fine without fmod.dll. If I put it on steam hl folder, any game wont even start, it gets stuck on "Preparing to play..."

Well, me, like obviously tens of thousands others, still haven't managed to get this new Steam to run. Well, it sort of does, but I haven't yet been able to start a single game session. No CS, No HL, No whatever. Keeps crashing, I keep reinstalling. Keeps me waiting for minutes or tens of minutes at a time in different screens, while Windows 98 thinks it is "not responding". The old Steam docs said FAT is not reommended, NTFS would work "much faster". I get the feeling that Win98 is not very well tested or supported, but the implementers have worked with XP/2000 all the time, and it has sheltered them from a million bugs and weaknesses in the Win98 environment...

Is that right: you who are able to enjoy it are running 2000/XP?

Yea I did that. This is all and everything I did(and it works great for me). I unstalled the 500k steam that was still updating cs and hl. I then got the 400 mb file from fileplanet with the hl and cs already updated. It never asked me to do the conversions of my other mods so I just copied the ns folder and the fmod.dll and put them under my Half Life folder in steam. Then I restarted steam and when I go to Games I see natural selection listed at the bottom under "Third Party Games". I right click on it there and launch it and it takes me to what looks like a plain half life launch screen. But if you go to Options it will show you all the ns config settings. So I search for servers and use no filters and all the games that show are ns. I just double click one and join. No problems. I will even go so far to say I have come around to like steam, I think it will be cool. Cause while I was playing I had a friend add me to his friend list, while playing and I could talk to him while evoling and never leave the game, never lose sound and could still see what was going on in game. If he had installed ns in his steam folder yet, I am sure he could of just joined it right from the friends screen.

Use the All-Seeing Eye to start it after copying it into the new HL directory and it should work fine; well, it did for me anyway.

    In your autoexec.cfg add

    'alias ex_maxerrordistance'.

Yeah.... Steam screwed up Half-Life on my computer.
The screw-up being that it uninstalled Half-Life, but didn't reinstall it under Steam. What do I mean? I ran a search for hl.exe and only one thing came up: the hl.exe in the Backup directory of Half-Life, which was probably from the last time I upgraded regular Half-Life.
What does this mean? I can't play Half-Life. I don't have a CD here at school (I have my CD-Key stored on my computer though) so I still can't reinstall until I find someone with a CD.

This is not a(nother) Steam complaint thread.

There is no ETA on an "official NS Steam patch." Flayra needs to get the Steam SDK so he can figure out what parts of NS are incompatible (e.g. the RMB menus) and why; then he can get a patch out.
