Blood and gore

I read that you guys were not going for the gory side..more for like..the "starcraft" look. I want my heart pumping! It would be nice to see like blood seeping out of a completely darkend room, and YOU have to go inside it. Like a black hallway...and there is a half broken flickering flashlight playing over a dead civ. I mean, there are maps where the aliens take of a space colony right? Well..there should be some dead colonists laying around. It would add o the frightining atmosphere..and make people's hearts pump like crazy and make the game more interesting.

that sounds alot like the last level for the marines on brood war, if you have all of this there will be a little to much adult stuff like bunch of dead corpses piled with blood just coming out of the sides of there head like on starship troopers or have a someone have his head in a metal pole which is a little to atult like....

I think the odd slumped civilian would add a great deal to the gameplay. Not to the point of limbs, gibs and blood falling out at you from every opened door, but maby a few bloody hand streaks on the wall and the odd blood streaks leading into a closet with a dead civilian inside. Come on there are going to be SOME dead people lieing around after an alien invasion aren't there?

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about with regards to getting your heart pumping. There are many ways to work around the blood. The maps, for instance, are all delicately constructed, and will certainly provide enough memorable experiences for you to start expecting what's going to be around the next corner. Also, the lighting ofr the map will certainly provide a tense mood, enough to give you frights about whether you saw something move into that dark corner or not. And having aliens on the walls and flying around, well if that's not enough to get you looking everywhere, expecting an attack or trying to find the best ambush spot, then I don't know. And don't even get me started on the music that the team is very eager to put in the background of the game. If they do get it in, expect the music to raise the tension and mood by exponential amounts.

In all seriousness, I don't think the addition of blood and bodies would do the atmosphere a single bit good. The overall intent of this game is not to be realistic. I personally don't really care if there is no bodies around suggesting an invasion.

But really, does seeing blood and gore in a game really scare you anymore? Especially when so unrealistic? And think of passing it for the hundreth time online... it would always be the same, and would get old after about the first time (if it did anything for you then). Doubt it would do much for atmosphere.

The lighting of the maps, sounds, music, and overall knowing that an alien could be watching from anywhere, will create quite the tense and uneasy atmosphere on their own. I can just imagine the vocals from the aliens echoing down a dark misty hall.

Besides, NS isn't supposed to be scary anyway. Tense is more the goal.

And anyhow, if we need dead bodies to make the game interesting, then the development team have failed their brief; to create interesting and involving scenarios. From the shots of the maps so far i dont think anyone will notice that there are no dead people there already, and from what I can gather, the gameplay wont be too bad either

when a predator makes a kill, they will generally drag the body away from an area trafficked by the prey. the aliens may be vicious but im sure they are not stupid.
and the lack of gore can often by much more impactful in situations of violence and fear... think resevoir dogs and the ear scene

(whenever i want gore, i just goto my zoology labs ~;)

I don't speak for the dev team at all here, but I'm under the impression that they're not trying to make NS have a "horror movie" atmosphere. I'm sure you can get away with having like blood decals or something on the map, but i'd stop short of having people skinned or impaled on spikes.

And I love the idea of Bob being a neat freak. He may be an alien, but damned if he doesn't like his quarters tidy!

First person to draw Bob wearing a frilly apron and holding a feather duster wins, um, this lovely asterisk: -> * <-
