I just found out about the steam requirements and frankly im furious. It seems to me like this has been sprung upon the HL community. Sure we have all heard about steam, but its only today that I realise its REQUIRED.

Still, on with more important things. First off I d/l a file called steam v2.0. Then I install it, and it cant update itself. So i find out that I need steam 1.0. So I d/l that , install it, and the thing updates itself pretty quick.

It then asks me questions. Nick, email password etc. I then click register, and it says registering. Then the little registering box freezes. I restart my comp 5 min later.

Steam then starts updating itself, and its sloooowwwwww as all buggery. Its now at 2% after 10min d/l. I'm on 512 adsl mind you. I have recieved no email in my inbox, and www.steampowered.com is down.

So did I miss something when it froze? Does it say Authenticated or something? I mean it hasnt even asked me for my HL cdkey yet? Whats going on. Plz help me, I'm really stressed here.

I have been a fool and given a lot of ppl my cd key and i NEED to beat them to registering.

    When it started "importing" my old HL stuff, I ctrl+alt+del 'd it cause I thought it froze. Well I assume it did (I used to use the beta, I remembered how often it froze). Now I don't know how to re-import them. I'm re-installing Steam now, hoping it will 'offer' to import my HL folder again...

    Btw, I should of either posted this on the Steam forums, but they've been down for AGES, and I think I should have made a seperate thread for this, but frankly, there is already WAY to many Steam threads.

    There may be many Steam threads, but this is the only one in Tech support that I am aware of asking for help with the new release of steam.

    I uninstalled steam, reinstalled it. It did the first update, I logged in fine, and now it is doing the second platform update. It was moving along quite smoothly till it hit 22%, and now its frozen, or it appears to be frozen at 22%.

    However, I dont have any p2p open yet i notice constant net traffic, so I am going to hope and pray that it still is d/l ing.

    Since ppl actually seem nice here, I'm going to ask a question too :-)

    I've downloaded steam, installed and got it working, and now I want to play some games. So I try starting regular HL, just to see if things work... and I get to the loading screen (the one with gordon) and nothing happends... I wait for a few minutes, no indicator that anything happends, no hard drive activity... So I ctrl-alt-del and kill hl.exe...

    This happends when I try starting NS aswell.. Any clues to why?
    I notice in the steam monitor that it's downloading stuff (or doing something atleast), does that mean that my steam installation is still updating or what? Shouldn't there be a progress indicator somewhere so I know when I can play a game or not?

    Thankful for any replies to this...

    i think its becuase everyone is trying to get into the steam database, and the server cant handle it

    cmon, 3 servers can the get ANY brighter?

    cmon, not having the FULL release on the MIRRORS was stupid. Thats the point of them

    I waited on a 17 min line (I didn't fell like searching so I just used fileplanet) for a 1/2 sec download

    now I have to update it

    YAH IDIOTS MIRORS ARE THERE TO SPREAD THE BANDWIDTH DEMANDS!!!!!!!


    cmon, MonsE could have done this better (oh wait, thats sorta obvious /me pats monse for getting us all those mirrors)

    I know that i was joining a server vs cs and i was in and so it frozen it do that all the time only got 30mb graphics card so i buy a new graphics card vs 125mb and so it work no frozen free for it

    Anyhow, steam's been abusing my bandwidth for a few hours now, but still can't even starta regular half-life :-/

    i cant get it to join any server, and how do you join ns with it? i do not even have ns as a listed game, and theres no custom game option <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> and it sucks, and i need some f00d, and i said and too much.

    I actually got NS to start now, and I could join a server. But as soon as I try to move, I get disconnected due to "reliable channel overflow". Has this happened to anyone else?

    The disconnect/error is caused by this message coming repeatedly:
    Unknown command: ex_maxerrordistance

    Think I have an explanation for that. I'm on 56k so I selected that when I installed it, and when it is updating it *tries* to be nice and not use any bandwidth, so nothing is really slowed down. This results in the update taking all day - you reckon you got it bad? I had to re-install and update Steam 3 times now! It's taken 2 days! *Refrains from swearing*.

    So it isn't really frozen, just gotta wait, wait, wait <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    I apologise for the dodgy wording but I was under a huge amount of stress.

    Think of HL - now take the Half part off and thats what this means to me.

    If u have Half-Life installed, you don't have to enter your key, steam get it in your registry.
