Steam

how will the change affect NS?
With all the hype, misinformation, and nonsense surrounding HL2, we failed to notice earlier that Valve quietly announced plans to basically make Steam required for playing Half-Life online. This is pretty huge. Is it a change for the better? In some ways, yeah, absolutely. In other ways... we're not so sure.

The transition officially kicks off 11 am PDT on Wednesday, when the first non-Beta version of the Steam client is released. Just to clarify (since there's been a lot of confusion), Steam is free, and you should still be able to play HL through third-party server browsers.

does this mean we will only be able to play NS via Steam? i sure hope not.

    dear god no

I am rather upset with this entire thing (I have seen no real advantages of steam so far)

I am assuming it will basicaly come down to having to change the Won ID and then you will (hopefully) be set

well exept that I tihnk they said they will only release HL patches via steam (I hope that was bad rumor, I sooo hope it is)

Okay, theres alot out there, heres what I have figured out:

Steam will be required to play the latest version of half life

WONID's will be replaced by SteamID's

Steam will be bundled with half life 2

(this makes no sense) You will be able to play all mods for free with steam (arent they free now?)

One SteamID will be shared with all mods (? I have the same wonid for everything)

It seems that all hackers/cheaters/exploiters/llamas will be unbanned when the changeovers start, they will get a totally different ID, admins beware

There WILL be a patch to half life to make it more compatible

AdminMod and AMXmod are already compatible with SteamIDs

Noone seems to like what valve is doing

I know there have been quite a few posts saying that if steam is really needed and annoying, many people will stop buying valves products, this seems to be the best way to get them to realize their mistake..

those are more 'reasurance' things than anytihng else I think

found more info at DoDNetwork. it looks like we won't be able to play NS without Steam. is NS steam compatible at all?

    Steam

All Half Life users will soon need to connect via Steam, which launches at 6pm GMT TOMORROW. Shortly after which the WON servers will be shut down and Steam will be the only option.

Server files are released approximately 11 hours beforehand, when the Steam Beta shuts down early morning today (Tuesday night, PDT - which is 7 hours behind GMT). So expect Server Files to be available around 7am GMT.

Steam will launch with DoD 1.0 but 1.1 is not far away. It also comes with updates to CS and TFC - and all you need is a HL, DoD or CS CD-Key from a purchased product.

    /me sighs

again, steam is simply a different set of servers realy
so you connect to steam servers with your SteamID instead of the Won servers with your WonID

so far as I can tell this realy wont effect most mods, it wont be the silly 'you must redownload the game every time you wana play'
And I have HEARD that 3rd party server browsers will still work. So we will see

all it takes to include support for 3rd party browsers is a command line interface where they can send information to the program (e.g. STEAM) this was used for HL so i guess they'll add similar codes...

Oh, yea, that would be cool, waiting 3 hours each time i want to play some mod. (~irony).

I feel it the same as Thansal, still asking what ADVANTAGES come with Steam and no one is capable of giving me example of any advantage.

I think the whole steam thing stinks.

The advantages of steam are -

O You can do many things while still connected to a server, i.e. browse for other servers, use the ingame chat to speak to friends outside of the server, or any server, play mini games while waiting to be respawned.
O Better anti-cheat support, by providing small updates more often exploits can often be fixed within a matter of days rather than months
O Less to download, if you only have to download lots of small updates the total download time is spread between lots of small updates meaning no more waiting for 3 hours to get the latest version.
O VGUI 2, this new menu system is far more advanced that the last one, even allowing for html pages to be displayed.
O Weather system support in half life, as featured in DoD 1.0.
O Many other bug fixes and updates.

And your saying these are impossible via half-life? Your 1st and 2nd points are false anyways. You can browse for servers using half-lifes built in server browser while on a server and if you run/play on a secure server, it is automatically updated with the anti cheat modules valve makes.

I also feel screwed about your less to download part. I feel that that is a MAJOR disadvantage because I can no longer make a backup copy of the latest release of half-life and whatever else i get via steam.

As for the weather system... I havent heard anything about this. Is this like Spirit of Half-Life, NS particle system, or something else?

What VALVe has accomplished with STEAM

Some server admin made this... not I

The better anti-cheat support does not come from VAC updates, it comes from the ability to make a small update to correct EXPLOITS within the game, so if someone found a way to reaload a weapon instantly, then the next day a small update would be released stoping the exploit from working.

those 'small updates' only work if it is a problem with HL itself or with a Mod powered by steam

IE my gaming experiance will not be cahnged (I don't play DoD, Cs, or TFC)

oh and steampowered is curently DEAD! so I can't even play anything HL

    joy
