What's With Devour?

What am I doing wrong?
1) I spy a tasty snack for my eating pleasure. I run up to the tasty snack and press 'Devour'. The onos goes 'ChOMPEH' and the mouth moves. The marine continues to shoot me. I try again. The marine continues to shoot me. Try again (By now I'm practically JUMPING on him.). Nothing happens. By now my health is in the 100s so I have to gore him to death.

2) I see a marine jetpacker. He shoots me, touches the ground to boost again. He flies up, I look up and press 'Devour' and CHOMPEH I eat him out of midair.

What's with devour? It only works like 1/10 times for me, even in the 'perfect' situation. Then there's times where I'll use devour and it'll eat marines that are like 10 feet away from me. And when I try Stomp-Devour it almost never works at all. The chomp animation doesn't even play. I feel like I'm playing Oceans Eleven where the batteries are dead in the detonator and they have to spend a few minutes poking at it to see what's wrong.

Its just made like that so its harder to kill the enemy because you can devour a HA Marine in one bite, it kinda suxs.

it has a minimum range limit for some reason, try taking a few step backs and giving it a go.

you also have to aim it. the very tip of the horn should be pointed at the target's chest

Out of all the attacks in the game, devour behaves most strangely. I suspect its the same problem when you sometimes can't bite a marine because you are so close to him.

It does have minimum range, I think.

Also, what really helped me was imagining a crosshair. Aim with the center of the screen, don't (as I was tempted to do) aim with the mouth itself.

Try aimming so when you're devouring, you're trying to devour the marine's legs & feet, not their body/head. I've found I get devour to work more times than not when I aim for the lower end of the marine thats directly infront of me.

Gather round children! I shall tell the tale of the Devouring Ownos!

There once was a hungry onos, who could not seem to eat his pray successfully, his chomp would not fit around the marine. Untill one day, when chasing after a meaty Heavy Armor, the onos fell in mid chomp! And easily ate his foe. From that day on, the onos would always CROUCH while he attempted to eat his pray. Making him the most fat, happiest onos in all of ns_Nothing!

(just crouch when you devour, SURE way to eat any marine)

When the oni devours it actually leaps out towards the marine, since the animation is not played it looks wierd.

animation or no animation it looks wierd, u could only fit about a helmet off a HA suit in his mouth so how he get the rest of it in an instant. its a great wonder of the NS universe. I bet it puzzles the TSA scientists.

Well a snake can 'devour' a person. Well at least in 1 case it did.

thank you teflon, much better post even if it doesn't cover as much content as the other one.

similar to delarosa - once I learned how to lerk, gorge and skulk effectively, I never bother with the higher life forms - it just wastes valuable killing time

    Roo

PS Just a message to all those people thinking of using devour with redemption: DON'T!

When devouring do NOT aim with your horn.
aim with the middle of your screen.
Devouring onos always looks down much.

did no one read my post? all you have to do is crouch, why waste time trying to get the correct aim, hit your DUCK key.

  • SnidelySnidely Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13098Members
Just reinforcing that crouch helps out devouring muchly.

There was a thread covering this in the Kharaa forums, but in any case....

Summarising and addressing the first post -

Ground based snacks - you are nearly always too close and aiming too high. Aim at your snack's feet and you've a better chance of eating. Failing that aim normally and use crouch.

Air based snacks - because they are usually going UP you will virtually always end up devouring lower than they appear to be. Thus you'll be more successful (since you want to aim low anyhow).

Also make sure you're still not currently digesting a rine I know i've forgotten sometimes, hehe.

I've never tried crouching before, mayeb that would help lol, since the onos are maybe....2x bigger than marines

    Thank you lol
