yes, i read the rules
I'm trying to start mapping (lotta ideas), but I still not sure if I have all the files I need. I downloaded the Valve's Hammer Editor like it says as well as the model viewer. There is a bad link to the Zoners Compile Tool 1.6.1 so could someone help me if I need this or not and if there are any other recommended downloads? It would be very much appreciated.

That's pretty much everything you need for now.

Here are the Zoner's Half-Life Tools.

ok, I actuall saw the ns world stuff for the mapping and downloaded them all except for the QuArK help info database which won't find the file for me. So I'm asking now if I need this and if so can someone give me a link to find it (besides Fileplanet because thats where it won't find it).

No problem. And as some say that Quark is better, I don't know. I suggest you start mapping with Hammer and then decide whether to change the editor or not. Good luck!

QuArK's infobase is only necessary if you intend to use QuArK as your editor instead of WorldCraft/Hammer.

No, there isn't a "best" choice, just a most common one: Hammer. It's up to you to decide if you want to check both out, or just go for either straight away.

Hi, im back and everythings working out except for one thing. When I try to run my maps I make, it keeps saying cannot find map. I have the maps sent to the right directory and everything else, but I think the problem is it changes to .map file instead of .bsp file. It is supposed to do this right? Does anybody have any idea what I need to do? Am I smelly? Do clouds cry when trees burn?

Hmm, well it SHOULD convert the .rmf to a bsp and copy it to the specified directory. All i can think of is that you may have pointed it at the wrong directory. Hmm. Can you post a screenshot of your setup screen (the one with all the paths, etc)?

I couldn't find a way to post a screen shot of it so I'm just going to write it out.

There is a bad link to the Zoners Compile Tool 1.6.1 so could someone help me if I need this or not and if there are any other recommended downloads?

Those tools are out of date. For any Half-Life mod it is recommended you use Merls tools 1.7 or later. For NS you have to use these tools, because of certain features you will find out about in due course. These tools are customised versions of the latest build ever released by Zoner (2.5.3). Hence the tools you should be using are known as 2.5.3 - 1.7 . Get them here.

If you want you can use even more advanced versions of the tools, modified by XP-Cagey and released on these very forums. If you have just started mapping they are probably not completely necessary, and may complicate things more than you want, but they are here if you want them.

When I try to run my maps I make, it keeps saying cannot find map.

The most likely reason is that the compile ran into an error, exited, and the .bsp (the playable map) was not properly created. If you are a complete newbie mapper (which by your first post I am assuming) you may want to first check out the Valve-erc forums or Rust forums and learn the basics of mapping for Half-Life. Then come back here when you need NS-specific help .

I originally had the "place compiled maps" in the HalfLife\ns\maps folder, but they still came out as .map files

The compiled maps should be placed in the ns\maps dir before running the game.
Like someone above suggests, it's probably not compiling, cut and paste your hammer log.

Hmm... This look familiar to you? (Current) last page of XP-Cagey's thread webbed at the top of the mapping forum talks about this exact problem (and the solution):

p.s. sorry I put this ahead of other more viable topics, I know many of you should get angry about that, I would be, too. To me though it was all worth it and hopefully I can repay you all back for your kindness with some high-quality maps.
