Well, it's been a long time since I've posted any new artwork here...

Some of you may remember my first attempts at creating a box and a CD case for Natural-Selection, back in the days when Natural-Selection wasn't released yet.
Almost exactly a month has passed since Natural-Selection 2.0 has been released, and I think this is a good date to celebrate this version with its own little package.
Unfortunately, I'm not a busy man, but a lazy one, so I'm not done with the box yet. That's the reason why you'll only see the CD case for now. I hope to find some more time next week to do the box.
Due to the fact that PhotoShop likes to "lag" on my computer when I work in high resolutions (300dpi), I'm not sure if I'll be patient enough to wait for every little change I may make...

Enough talking, here's the CD-Case. To enjoy it fully, you need to click on the link to the high-res version (2730x1200px). It's still not the original resolution, but should be enough...

Very good, very clean nicely executed and professional. Boy you have a career in design so think about that as it says 'visit >url< and get me a job in the gaming industry ' Well I think you should consider design as well there mate.

Uh, I like the alien/marine divide going on there, definitely done that well.
Finally... uh I suppose the spine could be toned down. The text could be as it is in the logo;
natural
selection

You know like that, and that means lots of black space around it, which always looks nice on the spine of CD's.

Also have you considered the DVD case stlye thing. Thats certainly more popular in the UK than ol' fashioned CD cases.

Looks great, DVD casings are indeed more populare. You did the TSA style frame really nice, looks real authentic.

I'll try to resize the Natural-Selection logo on the spines, but I fear that it'll be too small that way.
And yes, I've considered the "DVD case style thing". I just started with the smalles possible package, trying to make my way up to the full collectors edition box

Eplekongen Looks great, DVD casings are indeed more populare. You did the TSA style frame really nice, looks real authentic.

As far as I know, DVD casings aren't more popular. The big game-publisher just switched to the DVD casings because they're not as expensive as full boxes, so the publisher gave us no choice.
Anyway, most of the productiontime went into the TSA border, so it's good to hear that it looks authentic...

ANeMI don't like the entire "in outer space" part.. sounds kinda cheezy to me..
Good to hear that, because that's exactly what I think... I've tried dozens of different phrases.
At first I wanted to use the phrase "It's time to evolve!" but it didn't looked too good. It needs to be some description of the game, but it's hard to place the words "Real Time Strategy", "First Person Shooter", "Science Fiction", "Computer Game" into a short, smart and rememberable sentence when you speak english only in school

Quaunaut Well, Flayra has run out of ideas to not make NS go retail. YOUR TRAPPED, FLAYRA!!!

The very day Flayra began to work on the design document for NS, his fate was sealed. There is no way Natural-Selection won't make it into the shelves in my opinion... Flayra never had a chance to avoid this (and he never really wanted, I believe)!

kida I wonder what other versions of the same idea you could do?

I think I don't really understand this question... I want to create at least a DVD case and a regular box in the same style, if that is what you wanted to know...

RaVe ...but it should be an E rating, not M :/

Flayra first aimed at a T (Teen) rating I belive. He always wanted to appeal to the broadest possible audience. That's the reason why he doesn't want dead corpses and blood all around in NS maps.
But Natural Selection has changed a bit, and I believe that as it is now it would be rated M (Mature). In Germany (very strict laws regarding this topic) it would be 16+, and that's what most current games are.
Well, I'm not very good informed about the US rating system,so I may be wrong...

I say just get rid of the entire action game in outerspace part on the front. Its the information age. Lets face it, in this day and age, if you don't at least know what type of game it is before you buy it, then you might want to not buy it at all. Just leave that little blue bar blank. Please.
Only bargin basement games declare what they are. NS is too good to be a bargin basement game.

Finally, the DVD-case is finished, it looks best in a high resolution, so don't judge it on the "thumbnail", even if the thumnail is 800x565px...

As mentioned above, this was also more a "placeholder" than anything else... I'm currently thinking about making the CD a "Soundtrack-CD" for the collectors edition.
I don't know what "puwweez" means, but you can get printer-friendly versions, just drop me a line (either e-mail or pm).

Umm... after reading a bit of that text it's pretty bad, it has nothing to do with advertising the game, change that so it looks professional. Other than that I want a printable version.

Have you ever thought about the meaning of the word "placeholder"?

Translation into non-sarcastic english:
The text on the DVD and CD case is meant to be completly nonsense, the fact that I'm a german student makes it hard for me to write good promotion-textes in a foreign language, so I didn't even try.
Feel free to post suggestions for the "real" text.

The DVD cover is barely up to the quality of the CD one. The front on fade wrecks it for me, but really it's the amount of wasted space. A simple restructuring (of the CD front) for the DVD proportions would have been better.
also as a side note, that is an AWFUL amount of placeholder text, have you considered how long people will look at that stuff in a shop?

Well, if I would resize the eye, it would look too blurry. May be you won't see it immediatly, but as soon as you would print it, it would be obvious.
Another problem is are the dimensions. I can't place the eye like I did on th CD, there would still be "too" much space at the bottom.

Since I'm planning on doing another "Collectors Edition", I thought some diversity is needed. The CD is intended to be for the Soundtrack, the DVD for the actual game, and another big box for all together (and a huge manual of course)...

Regarding the placeholder text, you're right, there's too much text. After looking at it again, I believe the main problem is that the text is way too small. Thus, there's more text than you would ever read.

Also I think that a good promotion-text shouldn't be just paragraph after paragraph (like it's now), there should be some sort of feature-list too, for example.

====

Well, I'm happy about every text-idea since I'm not that good at writing ads. Natural-Selection deserves something professional.
I thought that it could be divided into three parts:

In the two textboxes to the left (I'll try to join them together) the reader should get some basic information about the game, including catchwords like "multiplayer", "science-fiction", "human vs. alien", "one of the first RTS-FPS hybrid", "huge, spaceships(maps)", "teamwork" and so on.

In the top right textbox, there could be some form of "feature-list" for the Kharaa/Alien (it's perhaps better to call the Kharaa "Aliens", so everyone knows what's meant), describing what's so special to them, especially their whole "Evolution" idea and their more deathmatch-style gameplay.
"Free to choose", "5 Different Classes/Evolutions", "Hivemind", "more than 20 possible Upgrades(combinations)" are some ideas that came to my mind.

In the bottom right textbox, the Frontiersmen/Marine part should be located. Again, a short feature-list would do best I believe, with keywords like "Teamwork", "CommanderMode", "Various Weapons & Upgrades", "High-Tech Equipment (JP, HA)", "Building a base" and more.

I know, some day I will be able to buy Natural-Selection, it won't be my package, but it will happen... (and I DON'T want a discussion about wether going retail is good or bad)
