<div class="IPBDescription">Getting Cable Modem tommorrow! :D</div>Cable guy comes tommorrow (technically today) and I got a Linksys Internet Router thingy so my roomate and I can share a net connection (and also for when I get my Divx box it too can be networked).

However, the one issue I have w/ being behind it is not having a way for somebody to connect directly to my computer. There are going to be times when I'm going to absolutely need to run a HL2 server, and have people connect to me. Is there any way I can make a specific port go directly to me and me only?

Would there be a way to set up Trillian (ICQ) and other programs that accept files (like IRC's DCC) to go through a specific port on my machine, and a different port on my roomate's? that way we can both send and recieve files still...

Surely Monse or one of you other trendy network peeps can help. :) Thanks.

p.s. This means I'll be back on IRC to torment you all soon enough. >:D

Most cable modems have a configuration address of some sort (as in, an ip you type to enter the configuration page). Me no understand technocavities so consult your local cable modem manual.

I know this is possible because I managed to configure my linksys router to allow me to host Starcraft games. I'm sure it'll work for HL too.

    <a href='http://192.168.1.1/Forward.htm' target='_blank'>clicky</a>

That should work if your Linksys router is anything like mine.

My routers a D-Link but I'm going to assume ( a dangerous thing one may say especially considering how **** linksys routers are reported to be ;p ) that it will have a similar setup to mine. Ports 80 and 21 are open for obvious reasons, and things like trillian/msn/icq file transfers work fine. I could also accept DCC from irc with the out of the box configuration alas I couldn't send. To fix it (with the help of many an irc peep) I figured out you log into your router (localhost IP as stated above) then go into the port redirection service choose a port you want to open (I used 6668) input the port, your computers IP address on the network (which is 192.168.0.2 if its the first computer .03 if its the second etc etc) et oila one open port. You can then do the same when you want to open whatever port your HL2 server run on. But as I said thats all on a D-Link router so this could be completely meaningless waffle <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

With a Linksys router you need to go to 192.168.1.1 and login with a <b>blank</b> username, password "admin" (that is, if you haven't changed it already). Go to advanced > fowarding.

Once you're on here, you need to open a port range. Say HL2 will be running on port 6060. In the ext. range fields, enter 6060 in both, since you only need 1 open. Check the protocol you need (either TCP or UDP, depends on the application). Then you want to forward the port to your specific machine, like 192.168.1.2. Just enable it, and you should be good to go.

In my apartment, as long as you've opened a port and forwarded it to any machine, everyone that's hooked into that router will be able to DCC send/receive individually. I don't think we had to set anything special up for it, it just works.

<b>EDIT</b>: In Trillian, you can go to Preferences > IRC > DCC and set up your port ranges, so I suppose you COULD set up your port forwarding to go to different ports for different machines, but I don't really see the point.

Most programs will work fine without configuring <i>any</i> port forwarding.

Obviously you'll need to do some forwarding if you're running something like a server, but most apps (trillian/msn/icq/irc/etc...) will work fine as-is. The only time you'll need to configure port forwarding is when your computer is not the one initiating the connection attempt.

Think of it as throwing a party in your computer (<i>stupid example, but bear with me here!!</i>). The router is the bouncer at the front door. If nobody told the bouncer that you're having a party, it'll spend all its time throwing people back into the streets.

However, if you let the bouncer know you're expecting people in a particular room, the bouncer can then redirect people to the appropriate location.

In techie terms, the router will refuse any unexpected connection. It'll properly route an expected one.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Would there be a way to set up Trillian (ICQ) and other programs that accept files (like IRC's DCC) to go through a specific port on my machine, and a different port on my roomate's? that way we can both send and recieve files still...<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Don't worry, the router will know where to direct each connection's info. No forwarding or reconfiguration necessary. Everything rides on the connection which your computer initially established with the appropriate server (msn/icq/irc/etc...).

So yes, both computers can have MSN/ICQ/IRC/etc running, and incoming file transfers will go to the correct computer.

well I'll need to run a Hl2 server for sure...

DOOM, these linksys routers are a breeze to run. Connecting to 192.168.1.1 (the router) in your web browser brings up all the options you need in a webpage. Find out which port(s) HL2 needs and you'll have something that looks like this before:

... and then just fill in this and apply it, (assuming this would be the correct port and the server is 192.168.1.108 on the network)

Holy crap that's a nice router interface. My old Alcatel Speedtouch Pro had a completely useless page like that and a cumbersome Command Line Interface that you had to use to pinhole ports. There were always a zillion mysterious port forwardings and half the time none of your manually entered ones worked.

Thread Necromancy - Back from the dead II: With a <i>Vengence</i>

Okay guys I got the Linksys router and I've read the thread but apparently I need more specific help:

    - I need trillian file sends to work for both me and my roomate.
    - I need mIRC DCC stuffs to work for both me and my roomate.
    - I need to be able to host games of HL (27015), Quake 3, Homeworld 2, Warcraft 3, C&C Generals, etc.
    - I need to be able to have multiple people here (say when my friend comes over to LAN) connect to these same games w/o reconfiguring a lot of crap. (So I can't just send the data from everything to 1 ip all the time...)

Is it even possible to do what I need to do? And if so, please give me step by step (unblurred out pictures a plus) on how to do so.

    Thanks!

    Ok Doom

IRC DCC transfers i can help with... Im one of the guys that got hodge set up...

Go to File>Options>DCC>Options in your irc client.

Set the First and Last DCC Ports to the SAME VALUE (e.g. 6668)...

Go into your router, and open that port for your COMPUTERS local IP (e.g. 192.168.0.4)

Repeat, using a DIFFERENT port number with your room-mates local IP....

(this was done on a NetGear router, so it may differ to yours...)

IF your hosting games on a LAN only, then you should be fine, if not, just try opening the correct ports...

AFAIK port forwarding only blocks connections going out of your router to the world, and vice versa..

Danke. The part that confused me was the Service Name thing. does that have be the EXE name? or is that just some lablel I give it?

Also, how do I set up trillian? I tried it putting the trillian port to me, but that don't work :/

And as far as the game situation goes: I need to be able to host game where other people on the internet connect to me, and when friends come over here to LAN we all need to connect to the same internet server, so I can't just have all the packets from that port go directly to me...

    Thanks again.

You also have to be using a static IP system on your LAN. the service name is just whatever you want to call it. I think HL uses diffrent ports for LAN and TCP/IP, and you can set the same values for your machine and your room mates, that way whenever anyone is sending a file, both machines will be listening for it, and whichever machine has the trillian NN that the file is being sent to will recive that file. Port forwarding is evil, you should see what PC Anywhere makes you do in order to make it work. Try running multiple hosts from the same LAN, its fargen messy. I dont use trilliasn so I cant be of much help, but in general the info has been summed up niceley for forwarding in this thread.

I found an interesting possible solution here:
    <a href='http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=35324&highlight=router' target='_blank'>http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/forums/show...ighlight=router</a>
This might also help for other programs. I find when I'm having trouble making my router work with some program (C&C Generals was a nightmare) the best place to look is the forum of said program.

Getting these ports open to multiple users may prove to be difficult. If you can get Trillian working for yourself, you might be able to point your roommate's trillian to a different random port in the firewall settings, then have a second port forwarding line for him/her.

Here's another one I found that deals with MSN Messenger/Trillian and DCC XFers:
    <a href='http://www.damclan.com/articles.asp?ArticleID=283' target='_blank'>http://www.damclan.com/articles.asp?ArticleID=283</a>
Otherwise, something like DCC XFers can probably be found on the linksys homepage. I believe they have a nice Knowledge base.

As for multiple users connecting to an outside game server, I've never had any problems connecting to any server with any game (aside from Generals which had glaring Firewall issues. I've never made any changes to my port forwarding to get HL to work). The main problem is hosting a server. If you host your own server during a LAN, just have the ports from outside forward to the server, and everyone on the LAN should be able to see it no problem.

Now get your damn router working and let this thread die!
