    LOL, I have this love/hate relationship with NS_Bast.
    One one hand I think it is one of the nicest looking and feeling maps in the game. The creater did a great job capturing the Man Vs creepy aliens theme. It has a good monolithic factory/base feel to it; You have your giant roaring blast furnaces, Steamy halls, dirty aliens infested water and lots of good dark hiding holes. I have tons of good memories of playing it with my friends.

    Then you have the hand with the bloody dagger hiding behind the maps back.......
    this map has alot of, er "cheapness" that both sides can use...
    For starters I have allways hated marine start. It use to be ruines for the map becuase in 1/3 of all games the mariens could build a siege in the coner and win in 30 seconds. Now its horrible becuase of that damed vent which allows aleins either to poor in or sit up there and bile/spore away. (note, you CAN gernade and shoot through it, although nades take a long time to get and LMG will drive em away but seldom kill) This tends to make good comms want to relocate and naturlay they look for a good place to migrate too which lead to this maps next major game flaw.
    Tram tunnal. They should rename this to "Tunnal leading to marine win" which is what it is. From tram you can jold off ANY alien attack with easy, Seige one hive, and hold a couple res nodes. It allso make for a great starting point for assults on refinery. As long as you stay away from building in its center there is no way for gorges to bile bomb you. Aleins will NEVER get a 3 hive cuase you can siege feedwater so acidspam is a non issue. With all the kills you will get its no problem to get early HA which means spores are usless too. Whats that leave for the aleins ?? Spikes, and we all know how usful spikes are for killing buildings...
    So once tram tunnal is yours and feed water is covered by 3 sieges and res is flowing like mana from all the RfK your probley going to look at taking down refinery since its easy meat. Why you ask? well first of all form that wonderful Tram you can build another TF and Turret farm to siege the bottom coner of it and cover your guys with turrets. Once you break in you have LOONNNNGGGG clear firing lanes to spray down EVERYTHING with ease. I send a few jet packers to pop outa that ramp and into the area I sieged with HMGs to kill the hive. Since its wide open there safe from close combat and can easly dodge spores. Often then can kill hive alone but if they cant there will be a HA train coming up that ramp to do the trick.
    I dont feel that the problem with Bast is with its basic lay out, the problem is that Bast cant evole with NS. With the sorce code gone its proble just going to suffer a slow death. My sever and the 3 others im a regular at see our player stats for bast getting worse over time. PPL just dont want to play there and I cant say I blame them.

    I'm still wondering why the marine start vent was changed in the first place. In 1.04 the marines had to go through the revolving door and weld it shut on the other side. Why was it changed? It seemed perfect to me.

    Thats my question too, why was it changed in the first place?

    Seems like the vent was the only thing that actually changed in bast... oh, and you can no longer click on the warning screen in the cockpit anymore, which is actually pretty disappointing... was a great addition.

    me too. why was that cool easter egg removed? also the electric arcs in the big dark shaft were removed too and the ones in engine room too i think. those were things that made me think the map was cooler. why were they removed?

    about the marine vent. when i'm an alien and i want to know if the marines welded it i say to my team-mates "did the marines make a little pillbox for us in their base again?" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    besides these flaws i think Bast is the most atmospheric and best looking map and i want it to be remade and i want those things that were taken out to be put back in. once the guys have finished remaking Nancy then maybe they can work on Bast. actually it doesn't have to be soon but it should happen eventually, maybe when NS is on the new engine <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I wish I could host a server..I still kept my 1.04 stuff so I have all the old maps <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    If I can find a way around my firewall I can try to host sometime in the future. Even though I can only hold a few people on cable I believe.

    Some maps are more flawed than others, though.

    Honestly, I like Bast, but the vent is the only problem. Other than that, it's probably one of my favorite maps.

    Lots of nice detailing was stripped out in NS 2. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> Don't know why. The new Tanith-lite particularly irks me.

    Bast is one of my favourites though.

    Sorry,,, Bast has to stay,,,

    If only for the cool-ness of the Ready Room (with the sirens + steam and everything)

    How many maps do you know have a ready room so cool?

    Im a gib games admin, and we had a vote over wich maps to get rid of...

    i naturaly voted strongaly agiasnt bast and mineshaft, bolth maps i feel are made pourly and have huge onos stuck issues not to mention , the stupid pointles vent welding spot and other endless problems.

    unfortunatly gib has yet to remove it from the server rotation... hopefully in the near future we may be able to replace it with hydrosity , or some other good map

    will see

    Let me explain: Turretfram in tram and main aft forces aliens to build/start in refinery

    Engine first allows quick removal of vent problem. Turrets in base allows quick removal of OC in elevator.

    And I have every intention of resurrecting Bast after Nancy's rebuilt.

    Each time, I'll have better tools made specifically to do this, in fact. Maybe this 'unknown' map can be recoverd as well, if anyone kept a copy of the .BSP file?

    I like all of the maps with the sole exception of Lost. Lost is just a nightmare as a marine in many respects, and an earlier win/loss ratio just confirms this.

    It is fun as an alien though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
