    Any card that supports DirectX 9, like the GeForce FX, should be perfectly fine for HL2.

    It will definitely support HL2, and depending on the rest of the machine, will run it fine.

    I was going to start a seperate thread, but I guess this is as good a place as any:

    Can you recommend a good graphics card for around £100 (about $130)?

    The one i've got my eye on is a "Leadtek ViVo GeForce FX5600 256MB DDR 8xAGP"

    I have no idea about how to tell if a graphics card is good other than by it's mb, this one is 256 so I guess that's pretty good <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I have an athalon 1800XP (~1500mhz) and 384mb of RAM. Will that do? Don't know my motherboard, can post it later. I DO know that it's an SiS something, i.e, very obscure manufacturer <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    YES I realise HL2 is not supposed to be too demanding, but I want to be able to play it how it looks in the demos <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    RAM is easy to get hold of, any shop that sells PCs and/or PC parts should have plenty of RAM.

    It isn't too expensive either; I only payed ?30 for 256mb RAM (i suppose that's about $50 which sounds a lot more <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )

    The only problem for me was that apparently there are 2 types. Luckily, one type is pretty old, and the guy in the shop said it was pretty unlikely I had that type.

    It is also the only component I can fit myself <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Oh wait I can put in CD/floppy drives too, don't I have such a huge technical knowledge <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ram can actually get quite expensive depending on what youre looking at. Getting PC3200 DDR ram, which is the standard nowadays, can go well up into the hundreds of dollars because of optimizations in timings.
  • DiablusDiablus Join Date: 2003-03-31 Member: 15080Members
    so how much would 244 bits of RAM cost? $100? or more?
  • OttoDestructOttoDestruct Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7790Members
    edited September 2003
    244 bits? it only comes in squares of 2... (has to do with binary) 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048 it goes on. Those are the exact numbers but you could certainly mix a 512 and a 256 if you wanted to. A two pack of pretty decent PC3200 256 meg ram costs around $125 (pricing this from the Kingston ram I'm getting).

    *Edit*

    And im not completely sure because I've not had much experience around Dual Channel setups on motherboards, but i think most require you to have two sticks of the same amount of ram.
