Problem: Halflife Mods Freeze Up...

every three seconds... lags
Hi everybody. I have been playing Halflife for a very long time with different mods! No problems have I had with any of the mods, until now! Every time I join a game, Half-life runs fine for three seconds and then lags up, and then plays fine for another three seconds. Every three seconds it lags up on my computer! Is there something that I can do to fix this problem, becuase it never happened before! I have tried the following already...

1) Defragmented my computer.
2) Virus/Trojan Checked my computer with two programs.
3) ScanDisked my computer
4) Reinstalled Counter-strike and Natural Selection
5) Rebooted My Computer

But still, I get this three second lag in-game every time I play now. It really has put a damper on my fun factor of the game... i used to really love natural selection, but with this proposterous lag every three seconds, I lose out on the whole feel of the game. If someone might have an idea or solution that I haven't tried or thought up, I'd really appreciate it. I knew that I could have turned to Sierra.com, but I figured that I could ask you nice people in this community who make this mod possible Thanks again in advance and please help me if you can!

Sincerely,
Deltawolf

P.S:

My system specifics are the following:
Intel Pentium III
Running Microsoft ME (I know, its the worst OS)
256ram
NVIDIA GeFORCE2 Go (Dell Mobile)
ESS Maestro PCI Audio (WDM)
NVIDIA_UXGA Monitor.

Oh, it is a laptop: Inspiron | 8100

An odd addition that may help debug this:
Well, all of the mods I have played: Counter-Strike and Natural Selection have lagged up horribly, but normal Halflife is fine! It is very odd, but there is no lagging in the original game. Suffice to say that I can play Opposing Force fine!

An additional Comment:
When I say "lag," i do not mean PING lag, where there is a pause from the server to the computer... I mean the computer itself lags up and locks up for a second and then plays fine for three seconds before repeating the process again and again. My PING on a server remains the same, it is the computer itself that gets locked up.

Thanks again guys! I figured that maybe it'd be a better idea to give you guys some information about my computer!

Make sure your not running anti-virus or some sort of firewall between you and the computer. Also, check to make sure nothing is running in the background that may be eating resources. Finally, your ram looks a little low for running a server. ME doesnt effeciently use the Ram provided, and thus adds to the many complaints stating it as the worst OS. Another I just thought of is your hard drive. Typical high end servers go for the SCSI arrangement as they run so much faster as in the RPM's. Which the faster the RPM the faster the spindle head will reach the data its looking for on the magnetic platter. So most SCSI's run at either 10,000 or 15,000 RPM , and since your is a laptop, I wouldnt suspect its much faster than a 4800rpm. Which also might ne contributing to the lag. Well I hope this helps as you never stated if this server is a LAN or public, but either way those are the first things I would look at that are causing your woes.

Thanks Rage! I really appreciate your reply! Okay, i forgot to add this point and forgive me for this, but here it is:
I do not host a server, but rather use this computer as a client for other servers, where I connect to other servers to play Natural Selection and Counter-strike. My halflife game has been working fine without lag for at least 2 years now and has all of a sudden come down hard with this weird problem. Okay, I forgot to add this to my procedures of things I have already done, but I have also checked the background and startup programs (msconfig) and (ctrl alt delete) to see the programs running. Nothing out of the ordinary is apparent, for I have done this many a time to see what is going on. All of theprograms seem fine and no antivirus programs are running. (I turned them all off). As for ME, it is a pretty bad OS system, but in the past I haven't had any problems with Half-Life in-game or out of game...

Well, thanks again for your reply, as it is very well acknowledged. I hope that this might help you guys find a cure for this issue too.

Set your rate to 10000 in your console. If that does not work, make sure that Blaster/Welchia is off your network. Those two seem to do that.

I've been getting this problem too. Except what I'm experiencing is packet loss.

It's only happened recently and I haven't changed anything on my computer.
This happens every 3-5 seconds. Only on one server. I also live in Hawaii.

If anybody has any ideas on what my problem could be, I'd appreciate it.
