once people start using WWCL or cfg checkers then this will be fixed - so no problem <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
yeah, but is cl_sidespeed 1000 really an exploit or just an afterthought? Thats what i'm wondering..
By any means, I did notice when I first started 2.0 that strafe jumping was significantly more difficult, or at least I found that; i'm not sure if that is relevant whatsoever, but it was just an observation of mine. I never had trouble with it in 1.0x, as such.

While these exploits are very very very rare its those who use them give config editing(ors) a bad name.
2.0 should be played as it is, if Flayra wants to change it he will in the next version he will (this has already been discussed and he posted about it personally). Making strafing easier means you are exploiting, it makes it easier for you to play the game, and makes u appear to be a better player, which I think is unfair. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Ok.. so if I tweak my computer's registry, graphics, etc so that it runs well.. thats exploiting?
pfft.. Just because people are ignorant, doesn't make it wrong. The information is out there... www.google.com can find just about anything you want to know with a good search string.
I think that the people who take the time to learn the tips & tricks of their computers and software should be fairly and justly rewarded with an advantage. I know I certainly am. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Edit: btw, its amazing what people want to claim as an exploit. This is simply a personal preference.. and it doesn't really matter what Flayra or anybody else says about it. If it works for you, change it.. if not don't hate on those of us who like it differently.
Blah, things like cheats and hacks I consider exploits of the engine, but I personally can tolerate scripts or keys bound to odd buttons and shizzle.
Changing your sidespeed doesn't seem like an engine exploit if it indeed was an afterthought, its just a tweak. Even changing field of view so you have a more fish eyed view isn't really an exploit, and some people find it easier to skulk with, or so i'm told.
The only command i've ever heard tell of really being an exploit was the 3rd person view, because flayra stated numerous times that 3rd person gave aliens a huge advantage. Even at that, it isn't common knowledge and it might even have been locked-down since 1.0x I've not tested it since then.

Right, come here, do this:
1) set cl_sidespeed to 400, cl_forwardspeed to 1000. Walk forwards and strafe at the same time.
2) set cl_sidespeed to 1000, cl_forwardspeed to 1000. Walk forwards and strafe at the same time.
3) set cl_sidespeed to 8000, cl_forwardspeed to 1000. Walk forwards and strafe at the same time.
4) Realise that you are not increasing your speed in the slightest, all you are doing is adjusting ratios. That the only thing which changes is the angle you are moving at, and that the ability to adjust this ratio is present in every version of every mod available for half life. The default settings for this ratio in 2.0 are slightly different because of an oversight, adjusting these cvars returns you to the 1.04 ratio, assuming you actually prefer the 1.04 settings. If not feel free to set the ratio to any level you like. End of story.
NB: Anyone who uses a joystick, or similar anolgue controller for movement has been able to control the ratio of their strafe/forward motion since the dawn of time, and i dont recall anyone ever complaining about it. This is the (less flexible) keyboard equivalent.
People, I don't know if you're just lacking a sense of fairness or if you're in a kind of "I want to believe! - someone tell me it's not an exploit!" mode...
In the game you're in a competition against other players - and a competition means the same basic requirements for all players, otherwise it just would'nt make any sense (a win no longer depends on the players' skill but on the quality of their "tweaks").
This competition is also not about finding the most effective way to modify the rules of the game. If this were the case, I'd probably be 'skilled' enough to code a cheat and use it without having any second thoughts.
It's common sense, that when you connect to a server, you should agree to these rules. (I guess you should know the difference between windows registry tweaking and ingame exploiting by now...)
Now ask yourself one question: Do I use this for convenience or do I use it to have an advantage over others ?
The line between between cl_updaterate and cl_sidespeed is probably your own level of fairness. So, if you consider something to be above or below this line, there's no need to ask if it's an exploit or just an "undocumented feature".
I did. While it seems at first, that Teoh makes cl_xxspeed look like a placebo cvar, he ends up justifing cl_sidespeed-tweaking (back to 1.04 levels...) with the same "it's an oversight"-theory like all other believers. In the end, cl_sidespeed 1000 _does_ improve your movement abilitites (fwd sidestrafing) and is used just for the resulting advantages.
I have no problems with his statements about joysticks. Everyone is free to chose the controller of his choice. Like the (rarely used) strafe key (+strafe), which allows similar control over your movement ratio.
Congratulations on not understanding the situation in the slightest, well done.
Ultimately, since i have no interest in your opinion, i'm not going to test nem's patience by telling you exactly where you can shove your 'believer' comments. I know what i know.
I say an exploit is obviously game based not client. Don't mess with game perameters, cri.tical managed something about personal perception of the facts of customization and its just not the same pal. Keep the game parameters legit.
Edit: They think Romano wins because they want to kiss his royal canadian ****. "Ooooh! Sign my breasts Romano! I love you!"

I know at least one clanner who will not change his cl_sidespeed because he don't like the ratio's. And this clanner is quite good, too.
It is all PERSONAL PREFERENCE! You can still strafe at a speed of 1000 if you just let go of the "+foward" key.
Setting cl_sidespeed to 1000 means you have jack crap for forward movement speed while strafing; but setting cl_sidespeed at 400 means you have jack crap for sidespeed while strafing. If you have it set to 1000 you will be depressing the "+left" key often so you can still move forward without running into the wall, and if it's set to 400 you will be depressing the "+forward" key so you can strafe to the side without being munched by a skulk. Either way has it's perks and downsides.
I know that if everyone had cl_sidespeed set to 1000, you would see a lot less of wallstrafing, as it's harder to do with it set to 1000.
Either way isn't an advantage. It is simply preference. The morons who claim this to be unfair simply think that setting cl_sidespeed with a bigger number is better, but this is all ratios; perhaps they need another 4th grade education in division and fractions. Setting cl_sidespeed to 1000 is no different than usuing a mousewheel to change their weapons rather than hitting the 1-2-3-4 keys to change weapons; each has it's disadvantages and advantages.
AHHH FORLOON has quoted me! Do you really want to be an Ebay tester? ANYWAYs i tricked an ailen to set cl_sidespeed, cl_forwardspeed and cl_backspeed to 1... AND he was going to quit ns and play DOD.... HA HA... HE was able to move later when I told him to set it to 1000 or something...
Yes, yes - it's been said often enough: The maximum directional speed stays the same, regardless of the cl_xxxspeed setting. But that's not the point. I see it that way: If I am meant to have limited maneuverability while moving forward, then I just live with it. I can increase strafing speed by not moving forward, or use a joystick - there are advantages and disadvantages with either way. Also, by simply turning to the side I can adjust my movement vector at will - but this means you can't look straight at you target all the time. Likewise the marines cannot look behind while moving at full speed. Finding a way to use cl_xxspeed to adjust the move/look angle accordingly couldn't be considered fair, too.
