NS: truly a team game
Just like everyone else, I've been playing for a long time... Heck, I remember my school buddies talking about NS long before it had a release date, a very snazy looking mod that we may never get to see because the future is oh-so evasive... but time played its tricky tricks on us and I was suddenly surprised to download it two days after release.
I know, I know... Your leetships probably downloaded it the second it was available for download and have never stopped to eat, drink, or go to work or school since. I bow down to your dedication.
Anywho, I'm not here to complain, brag about my mad skillz, or serve pizza. I do consider myself a good player with very good strategical flair (if I do say so myself). To me, it's basic stuff, but I run across players who just make BAD commanding decisions. My aim is okay as a marine and my dodging abilites as skulk and lerk are good enough. I run into every kind of player imaginable: the loud, the stupid, the silent but good, the silent but bad, the good natured, the whiners, the little kids that sound like females... yep. I've played with em' all... but... the truly elite are somthing else entirely.
I've seen a marine take out 3 skulks, then turn around and pistol whip a lerk BY HIMSELF. I've seen a single skulk take on 5 marines (albeit having only 5 HP left afterward)... and he had to run down a middle-sized hallway. I've asked them how they do it, but I usually only get curt answers, or "magic" or "hax" replies. A few of the good skulks point out the obvious: DO NOT RUN STRAIGHT AT THEM. Good. Okay. Check. I understand, and have for quite some time. But as marines, I've seen them use some undulating-impossible-to-predict-speedy-strafe-run that leave my entire LMG clip maybe hitting them 5 times. Likewise, those players with the truly good aim never miss a shot. EVER. No matter how crazy and unpredictable I make my eratic movements as super skulk, all 50 of their LMG bullets miss yet seem to flip around in mid flight and hit me in my skulky butt. As lerk, I've been flying madly around and have some guy shoot at me with a pistol... me having full life and him running through 3 spore clouds and withstanding the punishment of my spike barrage, only to not miss a single rapid-fire shot.
Impossible. That's what I'd like to say. A human would have to predict his opponents movements or aiming to the point of telepathy to become so good. I'm not that gifted it seems, though I'd maybe like to become that way some day... So I ask how. How is it, that you can deny the laws of phyiscs and have your hand-eye coordination to the point of instananeous? Play countless hours? Posses some mutant strand of DNA that borders on the line of making you a super soldier? I dunno... and I bet the majority of you don't either. Hell, it's most likely a combination of a lot of factors we'll never be able to fully evaluate.
You might ask why I even bothered to write this up, as it poses no real point or question. Well, here's the moment you all have been waiting for:
KEEP YOUR ****ING HUMOR AND APPRECIATION FOR OTHER PLAYERS!
True, I only seem to lead on kills when the opposing team is generally stupid. However, I know that my team has WON games due to my attentativeness to the situation: I go gorge and cap nodes right off when the rest of the morons are saving for onos. I ask for welders and keep everything in good condition while everyone else seems to go out and rambo. I am willing to NOT be a rez hog and put up hives. I never ask for medpacks as a vanilla marine at base. I make sure I'm not parasited when covertly building a siege next to the alien hive. I'm that damnibly annoying gorge who seemed to put sensory chambers in bizarre and rarely checked places. Just as your killing skills have added to this win, my commanding or technical skills have added perhaps an equivilent amount.
You super killers get all the pats on the back. You get all the appreciation and recognition. I'd be the first to admit that killing in this game is probably the most important aspect and that those players who are abnormally good at it give their team a tremendous advantage. But I do something unthinkable: I compliment our commander if he did he good job, even if we lose due to some unforseen events or especially tricky aliens. I compliment our main gorges for giving us the upgrades we asked for and putting our RTs and hives up in a timely manner.
I've seen many a good technical player go unthanked in games where their diligence did indeed allow us the opportunity to win. I know this is asking a good deal, especially from a HL-based community... but you don't need to be an ***hole because your aiming skills border on the lines of hacking. If you're nice... if you have a sense of humor enough to realize if someone is joking about you "hax0ring" ... if you have the common sense to realize you are not the end all get all... then you are no longer a damn good player, but part of the truly elite.
At this time, I'd like to thank those few considerate killers and technical players, who have a sense of humor, who appreciate the people on their team that listen to them and yet listen themselves, and who make NS a truly fun game. Know that you are in the minority and that most others let their abilities go to their heads... in a bad way.
To the truly elite: WE LOVE YOU YOU ARE COOL!
To the asshat elite players: You might be better at aiming then me, but I have more friends than you.

uubu is the antichrist
firewater is the striking hammer of god
lol, j/k. you two guys always helped me keep my perspective when playing w/ you. when you hear uubu complain about no lerk death animation because he wasted (gasp!) four to five lmg rounds (/gasp!), you've seen it all :o Having firewater get on a server w/ me and hop in the comm chair (i would, but slideshow commanding isn't that effective) and having him say things like "rat, i know you're competent, lets get these marines working properly" and the two of us leading by example
then there was tae who covered my butt as gorge while he was lerking countless times. truly cunning in his approaches, he bit enough marines in half for me to make a lincoln-log cabin around the hive i dropped.
comprox si teh nubcaek. always fun playing with comprox, it's like his presence is simple motivation in itself. all of a sudden the skulks are spit-shining their claws and fades are walking taller because he's with us.
it's been a blast gaming with some of you guys and many a fun round of 1.04 was played. haven't seen most of you since i've been back in 2.0, but I'm sure that will change.
thanks for the fun.

However, I've have had the good fortune to meet and learn from one such elite person. Thanks Chrisgia, for teaching me everything of what it is to be a good team player. I do what little I can to exemplify his great ability.
And I don't know why, but I'm just waiting for someone to call me a nub that sux0rs and tell me to stop whining due to their inability to read a post longer than two paragraphs.
**edit: I know Rage! Gorges do indeed get a lot of heat if they're not performing to the team's (or elitist pig's) expectations. People just expect them to magically pump out RTs and Hives, even if they have to suffer constant deaths due to small groups of wandering marines. I even hear some people complain when they put up a chamber that goes against their belief... despite them being fairly well balanced now.
Consider me a GAS member!
EDIT: Sounded rude before, sorry
So true... it's so easy to think the best player is the "elite" one who's name is constantly appearing on the middle right hand side of the screen, and they do play an important part, but the most useful work is done behind the scenes in building ****, guarding areas even when it's totally boring to do so, welding stuff, and generally getting people sorted.
I've been in many a game where, without blowing my trumpet to much, the comm hasn't been all that much use in directing the team, and I've basically assumed the role of field commander, getting everyone organised and into a group and getting them to stick together.
Just a game last night I came in close to the end, the aliens had 3 hives but the comm had locked down a fair bit of res... there was atleast 8 phases around the place (made for a very hard time getting around), each with their own little turret farm. I thought that this game must have been very painful and boring for the aliens getting all those nodes so locked down.
Anyways, I got the comm to kit everyone out in HA, with a mix of GL, shotties and HMG, all with welders, and got everyoned organised so we went on a hive killing spree. We got to Sub-Sector 3B, and the comm started building a seige... I was saying "WTH... don't waste our time anymore... lets just get the hive down we have the capacity to do it with easy"... all fire focused on the hive and it dropped like tissue paper.
I then got everyone to move onto Cargo, we got that down after a bit of a battle with some sensed structures... again the comm wanted to waste everyones time locking it down, but I just made the team move onto Pipeline where we started laying into that and it went down very quickly.
Basically, I see so many comms with a 'steady as she goes' mentality where all it really needs is some concerted force from the team.
So much time has been wasted because the comms don't command their teams to be aggressive enough.
Now that just went totally off tangent, but yeh, I agree
I am in that list, and all the 'elite' players just go off saying "Drop the DC now you nub!"
Only thing they don't know is that I've already dropped 3 of them and they STILL whine. Talk about "elite" pubbers (at least around my local servers)
At least there's the minority of people who are willing to let others learn, that don't laugh at them about their poor skill.
EDIT : To you elite players, you could aim better than me,but you still owe me beefs!
Yeah, but I'm a demi-god!!!!!
I know there are alot of good people out there, and there are also alot of people who cheat(try hitting F4 and see how many ppl without CD are on riens some time ) But giving so mush praise to these people isnt right, they share an equal part in the victory. I have played gorge entire games, even the long ones that are hours long, and have not yet recieved a word of praise, or a comment regarding my help for the team. I'm sure many of you know how it is to do good and no one recognizing you. Well i sorta lost what I was gettign at but I shall leave you with a word of advice.
CLEAN YO KEYBOARD OUT! turn upsideown immidiatly and shack and wack that sucka, you will be amazed at what is in there.
[SuB]:
Bah. I've seen this happen waaaaaaay too much. Luckily when I'm on marines I manage to rally everyone and coerce the commander into listening to me. But when I'm on aliens... *shiver* Games where the aliens have technically lost, but run on (for a long time, run on, duckin' an' dodgin') for another 40 minutes due to commander incompetence. I really really wish there was some kind of Commander tutorial to help people kind of get used to these strange concepts. I certainly don't mind newer commanders, but heck... no one should have to sit through that long of a game that's technically already over.
RaVe:
I hear ya all too well. Putting up with pub eliters' crap is horrible. They assume role of commander-in-chief and god of server. If you do what they say, good - they shouldn't have even had to say anything, despite their usual eagerness to spout it off the instant the game starts. Trying to appease them is pointless and going against what they say will only end up in them bad-mouthing you, saying how much of a nub you are and how stupid your brain is, no matter how justified your actions might be... For example, I've seen a decent player who wanted a change in pace get verbally cut to shreds because he decided to drop an SC first, with consent of most of the team mind you. We did end up losing (the elitist quit to the readyroom after a less-than-successful skulk rush, managing to snag a few of our teamates and thus, ensuring our loss), and I went marines next along with the elitist. For the next first half of the game, he just smack talked this poor guy in voice chat to the entire marine team.
For just a placing of an SC that most the team agreed on...?
DeadRoach:
You are so right. I forgot to add guarding to the list. A very very important and boring role. Most players, when not encountering any action after 30 seconds, will go out and rambo - even the players that know better. They try to justify their actions by saying they're going out to cap nodes but it means little when our outpost quickly falls and we end up paying for it the rest of the game...
FSHP.Bahamut:
Uh... I believe you misunderstood my definition. Perhaps we should give a better name to the "good" elite players and the "bad" elite players? I dunno, maybe calling them elite trolls or something?
...
Fine, you come up with something better.

Oh, the e-friends. Make me jealous more please.
And Blunt, is it stuff anyone can do? Sure. Then why the hell doesn't anyone do it on the games I play? "Iz EZ to build and i kill everyone so you guyz build the stuff i r teh HERO!!!1"
The servers I play on, 8/10 people as for shotties or HMGS, while I'm the only guy who asks for a welder (and since our Comm is a bit flustered or new, doesn't drop any automatically). If I don't do this "easy" stuff, then it doesn't get done. Period. It's technical players like me that cover base, weld the almost dead RT, and generally cover your **** from the strategic side while you go out and kill stuff with no thought to it. Perhaps I'd be able to improve my aim if some others, like yourself, did more of the "easy" work and not just kill-kill-kill-no-time-to-weld-stuff-and-people-cuz-its-easy-and-someone-else-will do it. Hmmm... if everyone thinks like that perhaps it will never get done - no matter how "easy" it is?
DramaKing, meaning I have more friends period because if you act like that in real life... well, you must be a poser-badass closet nerd who only has time for NS and not trivial things like "socializing" or "academic pursuit." So, I actually more friends and am probably smarter than you too (you, of course, meaning if you consider yourself an asshat elitist)

It's just that I would love people to be more... personable. I don't mean acting polite to everything and never swearing or joking around. There's a fairly cool server I like to play on sometimes that they will kick you for ANY swearing whatsoever. It sucks. I hate it. Like Kevin Smith, swearing is just apart of my vocabulary and are good words to add for emphasis imho. But people shouldn't have to be verbally assaulted and neutered because they're new or "not on the same level" as you obviously god-like people aim h@x0rs are.
A little appreciation for the people who allowed you to win the game is not asking for much.
I've only heard good things about it. I hope it's not east coast.
and those guys who call themselves 'elite' truly can be annoying(how about a guy saing the whole time in global chat:you're all noobs, you won't give me JP/shotgun or whatever combination they might think off).
despite being with NS for a time, my skills aren't really that good, mo' like average and below, therefore i always do the comms bidding and gaurd the gorge as a early Claws/blink fade(they are pretty effective without defensive upgrades too) and gaurd any unbuilt hives. i'll always be saying where the enemy is gathering and building, and most of the time i get in the quite underequiped sqaud 1(anybody noticed how one team gets the heavy gear and the other a few welders?), condemned to welding 'elite' players and going into hostile territory to go weld a Kharaa resnode or two.
but no player can be more elite than the comm or dedicated gorge.
I wish there was a way to better unite and at least play together.
I wish I had enough money to make a server of my own... and be admin...
Yeah... that'd be nice...

take cs for exmpale, over 3 years of going around just hitting a players head day in day out, move to NS a skulk is massive and very easy to track.
another one, tfc, fast moving game every thing isn't in a straight line, move to NS skulks are like slow motion.
same with UT and quake serries.
Alot of top players I know have all come from one of the above games which they have been very good at.
to practice for one game normaly i would spend time playing other games that help increase a certian skill.
any where from bots > UT > PONG > reflexe tests.
Play 3d pong.
Also, just because some people have a vet icon, does not make them elite.
I hope this clears up somethings for those people that really hate the elite.
One last thing, the elite do not neccesarily practice all hours of the day, skip school/work, or downloaded it second it was available. I personally do not even play that much, and I got the game a week after the release. I couldnt practice that much with me being at college, but I still manage to find a way into a top american clan. For you to assume that the elite players do nothing but play NS, you sir are just ignorant.
