...think again!
Now, I don't know how many people notice this, but the Onos's animations do not play for any of its abilities. If you get Half-Life Model Viewer, then you can take a look at how they are meant to be seen.
The devour animation is the Onos stretching its entire body forwards, feet steady on the ground. It reaches forward a good meter or so.
The gore animation is the Onos tossing its head to the right, while lifting its feet off the ground a bit.
In the actual game, the Onos's gore has a range of about 1 to 1.5 meters, while the devour can reach 2 meters or more. So one thing to watch for is the range. If the Onos is within 5 meters, there's a good chance that you'll get hit by either devour or gore. Also, you cannot hide behind railings or in vents - devour and gore still work. So don't be arrogant, keep your distance.

Or be right next to him.
I'be survived onos attacks when i have pressed myselft to the ono and just blasted. But just try to stay on the side.
If you want to be out of range of the onos devour you likely have to be on a higher spot than most places in Natural Selection have. Just because you have that shiny jetpack doesn't mean you're out of range of devour!
Saw an example of that in Eclipse...
I was leading a group of marines to station access in a vain late game attempt to make a comeback. While we were setting up the resource node, a lone onos came stomping in from the southern hallway. I didn't see him, but I watched as two marines unloaded from behind the railing. One marine simply dissapeared (devoured) and the other one was gored as he ran away from the railing by the same onos on the floor below.
Yeesh...
do this as you called your partners to stay close and shoot him.
The longer you can stay alive, the bigger chances to kill the Onos.
I did this suicide a few times, to noob Onos =P i manage to unload 50LMG, 10bullets, (miss a few due to nervous), but get to knife him 1 or 2 slash before i die/devoured, and my teammates manage to take the kill during the circle running (give a few meters chase).
Doesn't work on Redemption.
