Think You're Safe From That Onos?

...think again!
Now, I don't know how many people notice this, but the Onos's animations do not play for any of its abilities. If you get Half-Life Model Viewer, then you can take a look at how they are meant to be seen.

The devour animation is the Onos stretching its entire body forwards, feet steady on the ground. It reaches forward a good meter or so.

The gore animation is the Onos tossing its head to the right, while lifting its feet off the ground a bit.

In the actual game, the Onos's gore has a range of about 1 to 1.5 meters, while the devour can reach 2 meters or more. So one thing to watch for is the range. If the Onos is within 5 meters, there's a good chance that you'll get hit by either devour or gore. Also, you cannot hide behind railings or in vents - devour and gore still work. So don't be arrogant, keep your distance.

Devour does have a a pretty good range. I walked up cloaked on the catwalk in map (with biodome, furnace...wth is that name?) that is off one of the direct paths from the marine base. There was a marine sitting on one of the arches with his jetpack, seemingly ready for everything. I walked under sensory cover, jumped and tried to devour. I missed, but didn't seem to uncloak. Does devour not uncloak you from the sensory chamber? Anyway, I jumped up again and plucked him out of the air. He thought I devoured him through a wall .

If you want to be out of range of the onos devour you likely have to be on a higher spot than most places in Natural Selection have. Just because you have that shiny jetpack doesn't mean you're out of range of devour!

Saw an example of that in Eclipse...

I was leading a group of marines to station access in a vain late game attempt to make a comeback. While we were setting up the resource node, a lone onos came stomping in from the southern hallway. I didn't see him, but I watched as two marines unloaded from behind the railing. One marine simply dissapeared (devoured) and the other one was gored as he ran away from the railing by the same onos on the floor below.

    Yeesh...

I sometimes get thrown by the onos when he comes to mow down my squad, I take no damage at all, but I use that chance to run and hide

As an Onos, I'd really like to learn how to toss marines. I think it has something to do with how you toss your cursor when you gore. But at times you can send marines right to the ceiling.. and if it is in refinery on bast, then it can be very fun to see them come back down... all the way down.

So why dont the anims work again?

I was rather surprised how far an onos can gore vertically as well. It's at least half an onos-height. JPers beware.

if you see an Onos, don't run, get ready to strafe and unload everything you got, and charge to his side/back always.

do this as you called your partners to stay close and shoot him.

The longer you can stay alive, the bigger chances to kill the Onos.

I did this suicide a few times, to noob Onos =P i manage to unload 50LMG, 10bullets, (miss a few due to nervous), but get to knife him 1 or 2 slash before i die/devoured, and my teammates manage to take the kill during the circle running (give a few meters chase).

    Doesn't work on Redemption.

Versus redemption you have to unload as much firepower into him in a short time as possible. It takes a lot of lmgs to do that. Shotties are a good answer.

There are a LOT of unused animations in ns, open any alien model you will see at least 5 animations on each one that havn't been used. My guess is that the models were made first, before the programming of the game, and then were found to be unusable but were never removed. That or they are sheduled to be included at a later date.
