An Offer To Mapping Community

Who wants a layout?
Note: I’m not a mapper. This isn’t a preview of a map I’m making - this is an offer to all mappers reading this.

This layout is free to use by anyone with the skills to turn it into something finished, be it an individual mapper or a group of mappers like I had with my earlier layout that after heavy modification by the team, turned into ns_leigonxiii. If you take up the project, you can change anything - layout, theme, setting, names as much as you like. However, if it loses all resemblance to this layout, forget crediting me for the original layout and consider this layout as a helpful tool that helped you spawn your own one – that way this layout remains open for some other one to map it.

Possible setting: military research base built into an old industrial station. Set on a planet, not space.
Suggested theme: Stark contrast between high tech west side and the gritty industrial east side.

Some notes:
- Sewage Pump Hive, Sewers and Reactor are on the same (low) level and the small pool of water west of Reactor is connected to sewers.
- Reactor is designed to be partially two stories a’la Sewer Vestibule in Caged or Refinery in Mineshaft. The elevator from sewers leads to this elevated walkway.
- Sewers has water underneath and a walkway running over it.
- I’ve tried watching out for possible r_speed traps by using twisting hallways, viewblockers and such.
- Vent system is just a suggestion and one that was added almost as an after-thought so it hasn’t been thought through completely.
- Res balance is in my opinion pretty good. All four start locations have a close by res. Reactor is the only one that isn’t “linked” to a hive or MS. It could even be a possible double res. Travel times between hives and MS are not completely equal, but they shouldn’t differ too much.

Feedback is naturally welcome, as is anyone willing to take up the offer.

No, thank you. I like designing stuff and do it mostly for my own pleasure and for the chance of seeing it realized by someone else with the skills to do so. Hope you can work something out of it - good luck!

If you decide not to use the layout, would you be so kind to post about it here?

i think people like me need some tips on layouts. i'm normally just planning out gimmicks or bits but can never get it togather (like my AvP2 jungle map).

Does the lack of response mean the layout is fine as it is and needs no changes? Or that it's boring and doesn't inspire opinions? I hoped for a bit more feedback on the actual layout. However, I do know how it is when you skip posting when all you have to say is "looks ok".

And Vole, go ahead and see if you can use it in some way.

areas of the layout are quite similar to the ones i have been drawing up, and this has inspired me in areas that have been bugging me. So thanks

I don't mean to be rude or anything but no thank you. Designing a map is one thing and making a simple map of it is another. It takes great imagination to make a good map and if it's your work, you feel satisfied. If the layout was made by somebody else, I don't know... You would feel... Deprived maybe? Anyway, it's still nice that you made one for the people who want it, I admit, but I think the real challenge stands in the whole 'cake'. From the layout to the design, it's a long but rewarding way...

Naturally it isn't everyone's thing. I know that if I would ever learn to map, I would definitely use my own layout. However, I've seen multiple wannabe mappers on this forum who have said that they know how to map, but can't grasp the NS layouts fully. I've seen map projects with layouts that simply won't work due to deadends, too quick travel times, too high r_speeds, imbalanced res placing and such. It's those people or a group of mappers choosing their layout I'm out for. And like I said, it can be used just as a framework, something to build your own stuff on. I don't claim to make creative layouts, but I do think that I have a good eye for strategic designing and balancing, so it should be a solid base to build on.

I agree, and to quote myself from some time ago...

QUOTE

Well, building a map is a fun proccess... And bringing up ideas is another... There are infinite possibilities for ideas... Just look around, close your eyes and imagine. Let your thoughts flow freely. Think of some movies, think of the dark corridors, of flickering lights, of spaceships and stations, think of space marines fighting, huge cargo doors opening... And you're basically there. When you let the thoguhts flow, you don't need any help. Believe me.
