    Yeah. When you need your polygons and curves to look absolutly perfect at long range, go for an absurd number of polygons. While the mace looks fantastic, I really think you could of reduced the number of faces and still had somthing that looked nice...

    way too many polies for something that looks like meh.....
    its nothing exciting, your friend put too much detail into something you would never see normally, I doubt your EVER going to as close as the first pict is......
    the chain.... whoopeeee its a chain...... @_@
    just seems a bit overboard for something so generic......

    That bumpmapping is generated by 3dsmax materials and the textures are included in 3dsmax as well...

    MasterSword could use a modeller I guess. I think we're moving it to HL2 when its' released. it's a fantasy RPG for half-life. Easiest way for me to describe it is pretty much multiplayer morrowind for H-L...

    Aight im bigbulls friend who modeled the mace. The bumpmapping and texturing is really easy once you get the hang of the material editor and the spikes were made by adjusting the pivot and circle-copying. THe thing was a piece of cake to make as long as you know how to loft (for the chains) and boolean. And i NEVER intended this for any game (as you can see for the polycount.) The whole thing was made in under four hours.     He did a morningstar flail like that with 28,000 polys? I've seen models the same quality that are less than 1/3 that much... but still nice, even if it is high-poly.

    EDIT: What I'm saying is that 28,000 polys is almost 10 times more than any amount of polys you want in a weapon model, even view_model. Doom 3 only has about 700-2000 polys for view weapons, believe it or not.

    simple easy model, bad textures through wrong uvw-maps( bumpmap is to strong should be at 10 or 15)

    ps. i have seen much better maces with a gamesuitable polycount

    its not the model, its the bad texturing; and because of that a gamesuitable model with a good texture would look much better

    to be compleatly honest i think its ugly as hell....
    most of that model can be done with primatives, alot of polys could be subtracted while keeping the smoothness...
    the bump mapping is too over done...
    the wood texture is horrible and looks like a bunch of strings....

    yes, lets not flame...... as the model is PERFECT AND NOTHING COULD EVER BE IMPROVED EVAR!!!!!!
    everyone needs a reality check sometimes, you can never be "finished" with something on the first release, its just not possible.
    If your going to make a weapon that looks cool, you should keep the poly count somewhat realistic, otherwise its just a "oh cool, whatever" sort of thing, and it just looks shiny. Now, if you lowered the polycount you could maybe make something of that, a replacement knife, something for another mod, ect.
    Its always nice to have some samples of high end work, but it should be something more than a ball and chain for gods sake......
    now dont get me wrong, I like the thing, but I just say that you should keep simple things simple, with realistic poly counts.....

    this is a techdemo ... he just made something he likes and he wants to show it to you, maybe get a few <b>helpful</b> suggestions and he might make it a knife replacement ... but for now this is a techdemo it is not game ready, nor was it evar intended to be rationally within any limits set by hardware, software or physics. yes we probably have all seen maces that look better, have less polys and better textures and can be used in a game. I, personally like the pic and have also seen better posters than you bunch.

    don`t u think its a little bit stupid to call critics flame, when i say the texture is to bad then i mean that he has to improve it, its no flaming this is what we call critics and no stupid w00t bla bla **** posts; u should think before u write something...
