Marine Gunfire Causes Crash

Marine Gunfire Causes Crash
So I've installed NS 2.0 (been playing since NS first went public) and I have a serious problem. Whenever there is a marine that fires his LMG, NS immediately locks up and then eventually crashes to the desktop (Windows XP). I remember previously seeing other people having this problem but can't find the threads. Can anyone help me out and let me know what the fix is for this? Thanks.

You have a corrupt installation of NS, and it is trying to play a missing sound file. Uninstall and reinstall (preferrably after re-downloading your installer).

Thanks for the suggestion Evil. I deleted the directory with NS in it, downloaded NS2.0 from a different server, reinstalled, and still lock and then crash to windows with a LMG is fired.

I tried this same proceedure with another download from a third server, and still am having the same problem.

My soundcard drivers are up to date, and I just got the latest version on DirectX from Microsoft to be safe. Any other suggestions?

Verrraahhh interesting...

Does this happen when you run your own server as well (a listen server on a LAN)?

Can you give us some system specs?

I just have my one machine at home, so no LAN to play on without unpacking my mighty P200 of the Gods.

My machine is:
CPU: Athlon XP 1600
Motherboard: Soyo Dragon K7V Dragon Plus
Sound: Onboard Motherboard CMedia 6 in 1 (yes, I read the Tom's hardware review of how this takes 12% of my CPU...)
RAM: 512 MB
Graphics: GeForce2 64 MB

If there are any other specs that might be helpful, let me know, but I thought these would be the biggies. Also, Evil, how did you become such a NS tech support god?

Ah good info. As for LAN, I meant just start a game on the PC - be the server, with just you playing. A listenserver.

As for being 'NS support god'... I dunno about that. I wrote the NS installer and I'm a server engineer by trade, so it just sorta happened.

Forgive the ignorance, but I'm assuming that I need to download the NS 2.0 server file, install it, configure it, then run it. Is this correct?

Nah, just start NS from the start menu shortcut or desktop shortcut. Then in the menu click 'multiplayer'. Then just create a game (not dedicated) and you will be running a server, with yourself as a player.

Okay, I set up a listen server on my machine, joined as a marine, walked around for a bit, then decided to pull the trigger on my LMG. The result was the same as in any other game, a lockup followed by a XP error message and a crash to Windows after about twenty seconds. Hope this is interesting for you. Also, what is the LMG firing sound file called? Maybe it is corrupted...

heres a wild quesion, what program do you have your wave files associated to?

It was Windows Media Player 9 for the previous test, but I set default to WinAmp3 and then I started and joined a listen server, and crashed to windows after the first shot of the LMG. The burst animation is on the screen when the game locks. That was a good question and another thing that we can no eliminate. Let's hear it for differential diagnostics!

Do you play any other half-life mods? Counter-Strike? DoD?

Hmmm, can you play the lmb sound in winamp? The sound file is named mg-1 i think... Also you can try getting the sound file from a friend or just making another or using another sound file for the lmg. The gun sound may be something your sound card cant handle. Also are you using eax or a3d?

your soundcard should support EAX (I used to have the same mobo and sound card) and I never had any probs with 1.0, try enabling or disabling EAX, and make sure you don't have A3D enabled, also make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card.

edit: Just a thought, does it happen with the pistol aswell, if so check ur mp_decals setting, try out either mp_decals 0 or mp_decals 300, I had mine set really high and it was causing half life to hang after a certain time playing.

Guess that means the game doesn't want the marines to fight back.

Does it lock up with just the LMG? Try shooting your pistol, your knife, or going alien and chomping around in a bit. Does it lock up as a alien hearing an LMG or another marine hearing LMG? Just some stuff to try to help narrow down the possiblities.
