I'd go for a downed nanite-harvester (huge industrial starcraft) , and have a few rooms with perfect view of this Alien homeworld.

Evidence of this crash should be all around, torn down equipment, sealed off sections due to breached hull, elevation changes.. that type of thing.

I'd look for inspiration on an Alien world at Giger's work (dude who created Alien in the first place) <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo-->

    just my 2 cents

Nothing says this has to be THE Kharaa homeworld, just a world wholly populated by them.

I like the idea of a large downed vessel, like a carrier. Maybe it's something that crashed a long time ago, the crew is dead, infestration has taken over much of the ship.. etc.. etc. Arriving Frontiersmen are able to get the nanogrid back online. There's your map. Give plenty of views of the outside world and some link to an underground cavern for flavor.

It isn't too hard to explain the availability of nano technology if you're clever. Maybe the NS team won't approve it for an official map, but you have to be daring to break out of the Just Another Space Station routine.

Or copy the starship troopers stuff.
Like someone else already said, in a cave.

Or what about this idea: Marines start in some kind of fort (not to well to defended else it wouldn't be fair) in the desert or something (just like starship troopers). Aliens have hives and other stuff in caves.
    And a few more forts/complexes.

Yes, I know this gives a problem with skyboxes, but use my idea: a func_push under the skybox.

This concept worked out very well and I mean VERY WELL, could be nice.
