I Want To Make A Site Remove Its System Shock2 D-L

<div class="IPBDescription">but don't know where to start</div> I'm aware of a site (which shall not be named or linked to) which is acting as a public download mirror for many games, most of them freeware or demos. However, they do offer a free download of a full CD-rip (minus movies) of System Shock 2.

I don't even own the game, and from other people's word of mouth and the demo I <i>know</i> its the sort of classic I should pay for and play. The demo alone put that idea in my head, the game's worth buying, no-brainer. I'm fairly certain other people have thought this as well, and for sure most of them have not had the same moral dilemma as me about whether to touch the file.

I want to get these guys to stop promoting the game as having been "abandoned" by its publisher, and get them to remove their public download link for it. Easiest way I can think of is to show them that a big-name store still carries it on the shelves, so it's still making (some) money. I did this for a similar site by showing them that I had paid EBworld $10 for a pack of 3 games in the X-Com series, and they <i>did</i> remove their link for X-Com UFO defense, so I've got my hopes up about this System Shock 2 problem.

Except now I don't know where to look for big-name stores still carrying it. I'm asking all of you who paid your good money for the game: where can I get it now? (Both to show the info to this site and to buy it for myself)

Just tell the game publisher, they'll contact the site if they feel they want them to remove the link.

Marik-I downloaded the game from "that site," and fell in love with it. I recently (within the last month) bought a copy of it south of Indianapolis from a seedy bookstore entitled "Half Price Book Store" Or something like that. I paid 8 dollars.

    Hope that helps!

Thing is there is a large amount of controversy about who really owns the rights to System Shock 2. Therefore retail versions are almost impossible to find (Unless you go on Ebay or something) not to mention the money you spend going down some black hole. (Please correct me if I'm wrong....)

The fact is that System Shock 2 didn't do very well and because of that And perhaps a few other factors Looking Glass Studios also died. And System Shock 2 got discontinued. The only place you can really buy it now is Ebay.

System Shock 2 was a classic, one that didn't sell well. Much like Startopia, Body Harvest and FAKK 2.

Marik, contact "the sites" owners before taking further steps. "The site" is rather well known, and was asked by EA to pull some games off their archives, which "they" did without complaining. Well possible that EA is tolerating "them" - seeing that SS2 isn't being produced anymore and that SS3 is apparently in conceptualization, it's well possible EA takes "that site" as cheap advertisement for future titles.

I got my copy in a computer software store in Singapore Airport, so I don't think that will be of much use. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Tell me though, is System Shock 1 abandonware?

Just if you want to buy it, <a href='http://www.amazon.com/' target='_blank'>Amazon.com</a> sell <a href='http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000K4AX/qid=1061635663/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-1697750-2762416?v=glance&s=videogames' target='_blank'>System Shock 2</a> still, used and new.

SS1 is public code now so you can give it away at will and dl it legaly.

SS2 is a LOT more popular now that it was 3 years ago, but finding a copy can be hard, I pre-order it originaly (Sep 1999).
But yeh Ebay is probably the only place youl find a copy, try a few trad in places.

Thats the thing, you <i>can't</i> find SS2 in big name stores anymore, which is why *that site* has it up for download, that said, its <a href='http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=65259' target='_blank'>not abandonware</a> so I can sorta see where you are coming from, you could contact the webmaster of *that site* and ask for it to be taken out, and if that doesn't work you can contact EA and tell them about it.

Amazon don't count as a big store? I figured they were the biggest international online store in existance.... Oh well.

Thats... Interesting, to say the least, Amazon doesn't sell it new though, so that point is kinda redundant.
  • esunaesuna Rock Bottom Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15175Members, Constellation
Heh, sorry, amazon.com doesn't, no, but amazon.co.uk does appear to sell it new as well.

Amazon.co.uk has one used copy of SS2 and thats it, it also names a compilation SS2 was in (didn't know that) which unfortunately is sold out. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> But then again, when you see a game in a compilation that usually means the game is not being made by itself anymore, and when the compilation is discontinued... well... (not really sure if its actually discontinued or amazon just doesn't sell it anymore, it came out in 2000, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was discontinued)

I'd be very surprised to see any big store carrying the game as new on anything than rest-sales - it went out of manufacturing a few years ago, after all.

i think system shock 2 havent selled so well because everybody downloadet it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> this game is a real classic..and i still love it.? i buyed the game relativ late ( it was out for a half year) i got the demo before and i really liked what ive seen <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> and the new high poly models from ss2 rebirth rockin:D

just contact EA .. i think they will handle that

AFAIK EA no longer own the system shock licence any more. They dropped it a few months ago and it now appears to be propety of Irrational, but they are making a similar game but are trying to avoid any similarities to SS, so I'd assume they make no claim to it.
I'm not sure why ss2 didn't sell so well but I doubt it was due to downloading as it was released in 99(?), before broadband became widely available. I've seen one or two copies for sale in some places under the EA classic range, but thats just old stock as it's nolonger in "print".

    Wow... that's odd.

I remembered download System Shock 1 from "that site". Looking at it now, it's been taken down there, but System Shock 2 is downloadable there. I didn't feel like playing the first one, didn't feel like taking the time to learn those oh so many controls that weren't customizeable...

I wish I could find out what "that site"s address is. I bought System Shock 2 a while back, and when I got it, the CD was cracked. Niether the company I got it from or publisher would reimerse me...I need that game...

Mark provide proof to the "The Site" that the game still has a legit owner and is still sold and they will remove it.

"The Site" u talk about is very well know and the owner takes every care not to get his site shut down from companys and the government, all his games are either freeware or at least 3-5 years old as such not many companys still make games that old with the expection of HL <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> as thier not profitable.

Games have a very short sale life 1-3 years after about 3 years they become non profitable and are stopped being made, HL is the big expection its engine is out of date but the amount of mods make the game keep its sale life.

Games themselves become out of date but thier "type" dont EG Tomb Raider/Res Evil. They give them a lick of paint and they carry on being a cash cow for the company.

half price books is a nice USED book store, they carry music and games too, but i doubt you bought a new copy, so that one wouldnt count.
