I was too young for Transformers, but I LIVE Ghostbusters and TMNT. Ghostbusters always had great shows, and TMNT was just awesome. XGB was ok, but it didn't really capture the essence of the original, which is what killed it. Also, demographic shifts changed a lot too. Internet and Playstation have stolen Saturday Morning.

Well, i'm with everyone else that was born at the start of the 80's.
I grew up with cartoons like Thundercats, He-Man, Transformers, Count Duckula, Danger Mouse, Pole Position, Batfink, Dogtanian And The Three Muskehounds, MASK and Ulysses 31. It may have gotten a little crappy near the end, but by god you grew up on it.
I think the going age for a TransFan is like 18 an up.... Anybody younger need not apply, you missed out on the cool toys and I don't mean the crappy Beast Wars crap that don't even look like a damn animal. I mean the kick-arse die-cast toys that were blocky as hell, and if you didn't own one you weren't considered cool.

Man, Ulysses 31 would scar you for life. Specially the ep with the giant computer flashing up the Trident and you realised it was evil..... or the one with the big tapeworms that turned people silvery...... great stuff for children!

For more of the modern stuff (exclusive 90s era), I'd say the best wacky cartoons would have to be "Eek! The Cat", and maybe "The Tick". I also enjoyed "Freakazoid" as well. I am SOOOO ticked at myself for not watching the Sam & Max series when it was still on... <i>*sobs*</i>
For the coolness factor, the best one has to be "Batman". X-Men was pretty decent as well...

Does anyone remember the cartoon called(I think) "bots master" the main charecters name was zid zoolander ZZ for short and he had a bunch of thinking AI robots that kickass and one of them had rollerblades, but this evil corporation only had dumb robots so they would try and steal ZZ's AI robot tech. I think one of the evil peoples names was lady franzy or something. It was on Fox at like 1 o'clock in the early 90's. The only time i could watch it was when i missed school. Reboot kicked so much, I loved that show. They used to still show it like a year ago. Also Starship Troopers had a very sweet looking CG series going on for awhile, I used to get up at 7am during SUMMER just to watch it. I suppose those are 'cartoons' but they are kinda the same thing with different methods.
Anyone remember Pinky and the Brain? I memorized the theme song from that show. For awhile I was also really into The Mighty Ducks cartoon, let us never speak of that again...

Transformers was also revolutionary. It was the first time a Western Audience was given Eastern style animation (however watered down) to both acclaim, and massive success. It was also the first time a cartoon was produced solely to promote the sales of a separate product, but wasn't an advertisement.
I didn't get into Transformers because of being cool, or 80's culture. I got into Transformers because I was brought up on it, and even if it wasn't done to promote toy sales, it was an excellent cartoon that actually changed something. Do you think the current acceptance of Anime would have occured without such inroads being made?

It's not Retro, it's nostalgia. People who do not understand this obviously did not grow up in the 80s. We all grew up on this stuff and while our opinions may differ about which is the 'best' (Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, etc) we can all agree that they were all very very very cool.
That's my opinion, and I'll stick by it till the day I day.

I remember they had those really fast moving fight scenes and I got confused by them. "Am I supposed to wear 3D glasses for these scenes to get a cooler effect?" So eventually I got some glasses from McDonald and used them to watch them... pfft... nothing! :p
