um.. by comparison to 9x, the 2k series is the only choice for running a server. they're far more stable, have ehanced security features, they're faster overall, they have administrative functions, better crash recovery, and better multitasking abilities... among other things.

grrrr time to go on kazaa lol lucky i got my 1.5 mbps by my side

9x is a joke. It is neither stable nor remotely secure, which are requirements for running a game server.

I haven't seen anything impressive about 2003 for running a game server, and winXP has a way of giving HL and other games problems. 2000 is the best Windows choice IMHO.

Of course, linux is always nice if you want to avoid the gigantic OS footprint, among other things.

Nuk pirating is bad, dont do it, and any version of windows you get from kazaa will have backdoors in it.

That being said, you should use win 2000 advanced server it gives you 2 Terminal Services accounts free for remote administartion, has no restrictions on how many connections you can have to shared folders or drives, and has very good stability (my friend has only rebooted his server 4 times in the last year and that was to swap his 80 gig drivs (8 of them) for 120 gig drives)

OR.

You could have a GOOD server, and run Linux.

If you don't want to be an exploitable, slow, laggy, pile of poo server, that is.

EDIT:I could ezily get redhat linux 9 on the count of its free but like my friend told me where linux gets installed as a seconds OS to windows problems with come with it

Well, that's entirely deserved, if you plan to run your Windows system parallel to your game server.

Shockie's hint of the day : DON'T DO IT. You end up with BOTH a lousy speed system for you, and a crappy server.

Incidentally, I'm forced to run RH for hardware reasons, but I'd suggest Debian given the choice.

I would like to interject a few points:

1) Win 2k is fairly secure, if the administrator is not retarded. Keep it patched, and don't download freeporn.exe and you're good to go with windows. Seriously, all you people who think its 'cool' and 'smart' to say "LOLOL!!!! WINDOZE IS SLOW HAHAH U SUXX()RZ!!!11!" would never know the difference if the icon wasn't there. No one wants to hack your stupid server anyway.

2) Installing linux on the same computer as windows should pose no problems whatsoever, unless you are stupid. They are installed in completley different partitions.

3) Redhat sucks. Try debian or gentoo, although you'll need some awarness of how things work to install them.

my knowledge of anything to even do with linux, unix are well zilch not a single little command...

on the other hand whats wrong with redhat?
also what does MORE SECURE mean???when ur server will constantly be in ns??seriously the chances of u gettin hacked with a real firewall like i got not that norton ****

Redhat is to Linux what the British Empire was to Britain.

Huge, overbloated, and generally semi crippled by it's own incompetance.

Okay, I'm stereotyping there, but you get the idea. And the reason we say more secure, is because EVERY O/S (yes, including Linux) have exploits that can be used to either destroy data/take over the machine/sell your dog/ etc etc.

The idea is, you cannot *cough* be 100% safe. But you can make it a damn sight harder than a clean install.

Every OS has its pros and cons. Yes linux tends to be a bit more stable and secure, but you cant play any of the 2.01 betas >_< and onos devouring then redeeming is NOT COOL. Hrmmm if only i could find that article that showed the time to get into a windows os vs a linux/unix based os...... Windows > Linux in HLDS performance atm anyway so its all irrelevant.
• DarkFrostDarkFrost Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15154Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
People still dislike windows because of the 9x series and early NT failings, some people never will change their views, my personal opinion, after almost complete refusal to touch a windows 9x system, is that the 2k and onward OS's are actually worth a pat on the back to the evil man behind them, XP pro still being my personal favourite, it just never crashes and manages ram very efficiently (was loading into NS on 256k SDRAM faster than i could dream on 2x 256k DDR on my 2k system) So now im running 512k DDR on my XP system and it does the job very nicely.

Also running windows XP's own firewall in tandem with a third party firewall, and so far i havent had one intrusion that wasnt stopped.

That coupled with the fact that HLDS is now optimised for windows well....

No, people don't like using Windows because all the CounterStrike kiddies like to say "I PIEK TEH LYNUXX!"!"!{@" because it makes them look cooler.

Linux may make for slightly better hardware usage, but it's an absolute **** to set up and you'll be using programs with names such as GNUdraw and GNUpicture and GNUinsertnamehere for the rest of your life.

As long as you aren't a complete arsehat with Windows, then 2000 is the way to go, just keep it secure with the latest fixes and make sure you set the page file correctly and the status as a network server (loads more things to do, but imo easier than learning how to use a totally new OS)

If you are going to use linux but don't know much about it, I'd recommend downloading Mandrake. It's the best I've used for *nix newbies.

IMHO is In My Humble Opinion, btw. Pretty standard forum jargon.

The real problem with those exploits is how widespread they are. It's not hard to imagine a system getting Windows on it, connecting to the windows update site, and already be infected before the download of the security patches is finished.

and if you think no-one wants to trojan your server, wrong! They may not be interested in you specifically, but any computer they can get is a nice addition to a DDoS network.
