Building In Vents

Good idea, or just lame?
There's at least one vent on every map that allows you to build a wall of healing without exposing the upgrade chambers to those marines, sometimes multiple. For example, take a look at the Power Subjunction vent on Eclipse. You can cram at least six chambers in there without blocking it, if you're good at chamber stacking, and five defense chambers backed up with a sensory is some mighty powerful stuff. Question is, how legit is this?

Totally legit. And smart. Eclipse has a good vent system to build in.

It's only smart if you build a sensible number, away from any place that is likely to be sieged, and doesn't block the vent passage. That isn't hard at all to accomplish if you think ahead a little.

2-3 dcs is the most you'd ever want in an area unless you need them to heal lots of ocs, as two dcs heals you pretty fast and more than three does not increase the healing speed (only three dcs can heal one object at any given time). One movement chamber is usually plenty. One sensory is obviously enough. Ocs are of limited use in vents (basically just keeping marines out of places like the red-room, and other ninja-sieging locations)

What is the friggin deal with all the "is this lame" threads!? No it isn't. There is a reason why certain vent areas are buildable (the notorious red room comes to mind).

EDIT: Excuse my tone. Been reading the forums too much. Off I go!

Excellent strategy. I use it a lot to destroy marine nanogrid lockdowns on ns_veil. I have 3-4 gorges, 2 build in each vent at the back of nano, preferably with silence. Then have a skulk boost them up to the top, and so begins the barrage of bilebombs.

gorging in the vents in eclipse anywhere is great. get a skulk to help you, and you can bilebomb most of the map, and almost every res node. when you do build in vents, do try not to make it too close to the entrance. i was playing marine on eclipse when our base in cc got mobbed. every one of them went into the vent and i heard healing. people arent idiots. i dumped four nades in there and it was gone. try to build farther back, where you cant be heard. for building sensories, just put them anywhere people dont walk. behind any rail is good, or on rafters.

Vents are great for dropping sensories in, as the marines will rarely stumble across them by accident. When I play marine and start getting killed by invisible monstrosoties I know there's a sensory around somewhere and start searching the nearby dark corners. Usually you can find it and knife it, which is why it's important to build them in hard-to-reach places.

Vent building is almost a necessity now, as even pubs are learning that marine towers can get them into vents very early, meaning bases can be built in Onos free places.

Once I see marines in a vent, I tend to put up an OC or 3 in a manner that still allows easy movement but also discourages nonaliens from reentering.

It is if it's just a gorge building DCs and trying to extend the game.

Funniest part is, once, while trying to get to a hive, I once stumbled upon someone else's vent nest, where they were hiding... I was able to put up the hive as a result, and, due to huge amounts of res, turn the tide with onos. It was funny.

Still no idea of map names, but its the one with Feedwater Hive and Engine Room Hive.

Vents in it are being more frequently used as marines, so I encourage all Kharaa to watch for this form of invasion. It leaves Engine wide open, and there's a similar way into Refinery. I tend to drop some OC in them just for safety. Much better than having to gas them or try and take down an elec RT with turrets and seiges.

Hehe, a good thinking marine used just that tactic today to let me get a comm win. It's ns_bast, and you have to be right in that corner to do it, but its darn sneaky, and only needs 3 twitchy marines to do.
