Lag Or Not Lag?

Hi,

Kinda new to this game. I played a bit of 1.4 but got **** off with lag so i stopped playing.
Started playing 2.0 a few weeks back and was just getting into it when the lag came back.

It not like normal server lag though. I start to run and when i stop or go to turn i keep running.
It must look really stupid to other players as i just keep running up againist the walls - <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> .
Anywho... i tried playing over LAN with my bro and i still get the same problem. So it doesnt seem like lag.

So after all that talking, my question is....... is this just lag (i.e. are other people getting this) or is it problem
my side? Help please!!!!!!!

P.S. I've got Cable connection so its not that.

    a huge problem may be if you're running cpu-intensive programs, like virus-scanners, or anything else, in the background, or if you have a net-intensive program such as kazaa. Also go to downloads.com and get AdAware, update it, and run it, as you may be surprised at the number of adware scripts and bots your computer may be running (I take VERY good care of my computer, noticed a slowdown, ran AdAware, and found 243 adware programs. They feed info over then net, so they take up cpu and bandwidth). Those are my suggestions.

    EDIT: and welcome to the forums!

    have to ask a question, what key do you have bound to +forward ?
    have you changed the config.cfg by hand at all ?

    Thanks mate. Never really thought of it like that.
    I have got Norton running in the background but i dont have any problem with other games?
    Its a bit of odd one.

    Really i though either someone would say:

    "Never heard of this before... sorry cant help"

    OR

    "Yeah loads of people are having this problem. Wait for a patch"

    So i guess people arent having this problem. I'll try turning Nortons off.

    Thanks again <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    P.S. I also take care of my computer and have been using Adware for ages.
    I found about 250 the first time i ran it. Its a real pisser.

    Edit - Sorry eaglec was writing the above post when you replied.
    No i havent changed anything in the config.cfg.

    That's wierd. You don't have this problem with any other mod or FPS I assume? Try looking around the tech support forums, somebody might have had ran into your problem before. Meanwhile, try reinstalling NS, Halflife, and if neccessary, reformatting your PC. That's all for now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->. GL.

    HL has the annoying habbit of remebering all the windows stuff while its running so pressing the Win key brings up the menu for example. Newer MS operating systems have a thing called sticky keys that by default enable you to lock a key when you press it for longer than a few seconds. This might be causing it.

    Also if you are using mouse1 as +forward it might be your mouse button is sticking. I know these are all very simple non-technical solutions but I find thats normally the best place to start.

    Disabling all other programs that run in the background would also be a good test as would trying another HL mod, CS for example. I'd leave a re-install as a last resort.

    How much ram you got? and how many mhz <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Choke/Loss == ?
    fps = ?
    Rate 10,000 *Half the people on ns forgot to change this in their config when they re-installed, also some servers change it back to 5,000*

    Once again.... thanks for the help <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Well i tried turning off Nortons (about the only thing running in the background) and it didnt work <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    I dont have any other problems with HL mods and i play FPS all the time online so its nothing there.

    I'm gonna look more into this +forward thing. It could be that but i havent really changed anything in that way.

    Lagger, in answer to your question - CPU = 2100 XP and RAM = 768meg. So i'm hoping its not that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It's a bug in halflife. It has nothing to do with lag, I think it's a problem with handling large amounts of textures. It mostly happens to me in DoD, also occasionally in NS, on rare occasions in CS. Turning off zonealarm works wonders, makes it happen only very rarely to me. Upgrading my computer hasnt changed it a bit though.

    Not running Xp Pro by any chance? I had the same problem, I'm running win2k now (take a guess of the fix I'm surgesting.)

    Btw eaglec, why do you keep asking people what they got bound for forward? I'm sure I saw one of you ask someone what they had for forward, and i think after he said w he said, "<admins name>, did you exec_client on me?"

    Oh yeah, stickykeys shortcut is holding shift for about 7 seconds.

    Is Zone Alarm the problem? I never thought of that. I get these weird occurances of seemingly large amounts of lag (ie laggy and unresponsive controls) when there is not reason. My fps is a solid 60, and my choke/loss is 0. plus, latency is at around 60 also. Not to change the topic, but is this the sort of lag you are dealing with?

    {edit} I forgot to mention. Im running XP pro, pentium 4 1.8, 512 ram. This should be enought to run NS well enough. My graphics card is a bit low, but as i mentioned, the fps rarely drop from 60

    Everyone says turn vsync off.

    Try other mods like cs etc.

    I think Zonealarm used to do this to me too. I ALWAYS turn zonealarm off when playing; not only does it sometimes cause this problem, but it also gives me lag.

    I run XP Pro on 4 PC's here and have never experienced that problem.

    I have only asked this guy what he has bound to +forward in case its a key that XP's sticky keys feature might be interested in. Like shift or control. I asked him because the symptoms are not typical of lag, CPU load or graphic problems but more simply they seem to be a stuck key, OS 'feature' or bad bind. A programmable joystick might also cause these symptoms due to the way it might handle the binding.

    Ok guys so it looks like other people are having this problem too. Which is good in some ways but sucks in others.

    I'm running XP Pro so it looks like it could be something there.
    I'm not using Zone Alarm though. I'm using Nortons Firewall and tried playing the other day with it turned off. Seemed to cut it down a bit but still happens <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    I'm running a AMD 2100 XP, 768meg DDR Ram, Geforce 3, 600Kbps Cable. So it really cant be anything there.

    I got the same problem with zone alarm. When I play the game with zone alarm, I dont get any lag but I do get unresponsive controls.
    Does somebody know how to fix this problem with zone alarm, cause Its really frustrating playing the game. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> (turning off zone alarm isnt a option) <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Me too. I turned off vsync to get 100 FPS (yeah, after 2.0), and I noticed no difference at all.

    In graphic-intensive games like BF1942 and UT2K3, I would get wierd freezes that would last several seconds long, and then resume.

    I found out my geforce4 was overheating. I put a PCI fan under it and all the problems went away.

    BTW: How do you turn off vsync?
