Learning The Maps

How do you guys learn all the areas of the maps? Do you start up a LAN game and walk around and memorize it? I've played through my fair share of games so far, and I still can't find my way around each of the maps. I always get a little nervous when my teammates are screaming something along the lines of "get to computer core now!" or something, because I'm afraid I might let them down.

P.S. I go by 404notfound in-game... that nick was already taken on this board

Back in the 1.0 days, my tactic was to leave base by some random exit and just wander around looking at the names until i got eaten. Make sure you read the area names when you enter them, and be sure to use your minimap to not only learn the map, but see what is going on on the other side of it and if you're needed anywhere. If you have a waypoint, go to it. If not, just find a random marine and follow him.

He made mini-maps with names written on them, that you can use IN-GAME. Check it out. Think that will learn you quick enough?

Those minimaps are pretty neat, but then there's the matter of not having any icons on-screen to determine where things/people are.

I don't learn the maps. I rely on hivesight as alien and the minimap as marine. I still don't know the new ns maps, and I'm only just starting to learn the differences of the old ones. I didn't do anything to specifically learn the maps when I first started, either. If you've got a good commander it shouldn't make a difference, really

Well my friend, back in the days of 1.0x, we had a neigh useless mini map. We actually had to wonder around the maps, without a map. Memorizing was the only way I would know where to go, as the mini map helped...none...

I know all the maps by heart.

First, stare at the mini map. then memorize where the hives are, and what their names are.

then memorize paths to each hive.

then memorize names of RT areas.

that's pretty much it. i mean, no one, well few NS players actually yell "I'm in RESEARCH LABS!! HELP!!". they are like, "Get to outside waste hive via west access corridor (an RT area)".

so, don't worry about memorizing the ENTIRE map. unless you are a hopeless fanboi (somewhat like myself ). just the hive names, and the RT areas.

    cheers, hth.

Just keep switching teams after every round, chances are, thats since you're new you will only make it so far out side your base. If you keep changing teams after every round, you'll have started on, usually, 4 corners of the map. (3 hives and the Marine Start).

You'll pick it up, put I suggest being a skulk.

I usually just wander around and read the place names, or i used to start a lan game and get in the comm chair, then scroll over the map reading names, then go to them as a marine, look round, memorise, repeat.
