Pheromones

<div class="IPBDescription">Does anyone use it?</div> I tried using pheromones a couple of times, but found it useless in comparison to scent of fear. Does anyone prefer to use pheromones, and does it have any advantages that people like myself may be missing out on?

Or is it a waste of an upgrade?

i find it a waste, it's only helpful in a dark room and a marine is hiding in the corner and it's pitch black, he'll appear in a cloud of green smoke. But i stay with SoF, so much better.

Pheromones are a good upgrade on itself, if it weren't for the fact that scent of fear were (too) strong and alot better.

If you can choose between sof in it's current state and phero in it's current state, I think 99,999999 % of the players will choose phero.

    So, I don't think you're missing anything <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sof is just the better upgrade atm, that's about it

    Cheers <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I regularly use SoF for finding marines in a dark room. It's especially nice on weekends, when I play early enough in the day that I have nasty monitor glare.

I wouldn't mind seeing a sensory upgrade like predator-vision: fullbright and palette-shifted. Or just fullbright and monochrome.

Indeed - that was pretty much what advanced hive sight did in 1.04 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I'd like it back too...

    Now *that* I would like!

pheromones make the rines look like they are farting every few feet <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

who cares where marines have been when you can know where they are? that's the whole pheromones vs sof debate in a single question.

Yes its a bad upgrade. Try posting some new ones in the S&i as I forsee it being changed in the next big update like 2.2 etc.

I want adv hive sight up again. It makes skulking and locating the marines easier.

Pheremones are pretty useless compared to SoF, and cloaking can be seen way too easily.

It'll be cool if pheromones acted a bit like an aimbot at close range. So while in combat, you'll automatically face the marine wherever they were, and wouldn't lose sight of him.

If the range was increased and the clouds lingered more I'd use it ALOT with silence...perfect for hunting

the fact is the range of the cloud almost NEVER exceeds the range of sof. if you can see the tail end of the cloud, its very likely you could see him on sof anyway. throw the fact that sof works through walls in, and its hundreds of times better. pheremones would have worked better in 1.04, on a map like ns_nothing, to see which vent jpers went in and such. But this is 2.0, there is no more ns_nothing (unless you set it up) and jet pack is much easier to follow. analysis? Pheremones are a COMPLETE waste.

I think if SoF was changed back to only show injured marines, pheremones would become quite useful. But as it stands now, SoF is 10x better.

now if pheromones was combined with Adv Hive sight....

You're right.. but the question goes a little deeper. Which one tells you where they are and which one tells you where they were?

In a large, dark room, pheremones is a lot better at telling you where they are than SoF, because whether you realize it or not, you very often have a line of sight on the marine, so SoF doesn't kick in.

If I know marines are in very dark areas, (like Triad) then I'll choose Pheremones, but I'll admit, it's pretty danged specialized, and not near as useful as advanced hive-sight.

There is one kewl thing about phera. if you have it and an Onos teammate devours a marine, it looks like the onos has gas <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    *READ*

SoF Is Better than marine motion tracking,
Marines no longer need to be hurt in order to use this,
I Never get any other upgrades from SC Except SoF
    Even cloaking isnt as good
I have no idea why phormones is even on NS
    As SoF Totally owns it

SoF Level 1 - Limited Sight
SoF Level 2 - Longer Range
    SoF Level 3 - 90% Map Coverage

If I recall correectly Pheromones originally was planned to be a trait that negated Motion Tracking on just you. Why didn't that idea stick? Wouldn't it be cooler that way?

You'd have to decide: "Hmm, what should I pick, not to be detected, or to be able to detect?"

If I feared motion tracking enough to give up Scent of Fear, I would cower by a Sensory Chamber for the rest of the game.
  • gekigariongekigarion Join Date: 2003-08-24 Member: 20172Members
That'd be true, but it's better than having the choice of:

"Hmm, Scent of Fear Wannabe or Scent of Fear?"
