Hey, I was thinking about looking for a scrim one day, and after reading through some adds in #findscrim thought that it would be easier to have an automated webpage for people who are looking for last second scrim or just wanna post a time period for an evening. So I decided to take this project up myself.
First I wanted to know a few things
1) does a similar page already exist? (NOT A LEAGUE PAGE)
2) is this something thing that would really be used?
3) ideas on how to go about it

I am alright with PHP/SQL and already have programmed basic scripts for my clanpage <a href='http://clanuvic.homedns.org' target='_blank'>Clan Uvic</a>
I programmed a login/registration system news posting(and for admins editing/deleting) and a webpoll

So my initial idea is this,
1) be able to browse scrim listings
2) post a time period for a scrim (say thursday the 24th starting at 8pm-10pm)
3) search other postings by time

Anyways If this is a dumb idea say so, and it dissapears, if not, I want some feedback <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also if this is something that clans think might be cool, and you want to help send an email to me at iamthebeaster@hotmail.com or come to #UVic on gamesnet and PM me
I am looking for some one to do the graphics/layout, and if your a "elite" PHP/SQL programmer and think this is a cool idea just come talk to me Thanks in advance

#findnsscrim is like the best way to get scrimms, a website would just be extraneous work.

at first I thought it would be hard to implement, but its really not bad. and I like to spend my spare time programming for my webpage, so this is just a new project for me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

First of all you are wrong to the max. Beaster knows his shizzle bizzle. Going to the site would not require users to be actively paying attention to their irc. You look at the site see that people are availible to scrim, go to their server and bust out some scrimmage shat. Frequently in irc you end up leaving messages that are not seen for hours.. By that time the window is closed. In findnsscrim there is too much flood to see messages. SO THAT'S THAT!

The problem with IRC is that not everyone is a hardcore "i'm always around to scrim 24/7" kinda player. I don't know about the "elite" clans, but we don't have people always willing to scrim at the drop of a hat. Everybody has an outside life...people are busy, not everyone can be on-call to find a scrim, ect, ect. This is the type of project that provides the opportunity of planning ahead, or seeing who is availible.. whether it be an entire clan or only a few members. I'm sure we're not the only clan out there that has trouble doing spontaneous scrims.

Make sure you're on gamesnet for #findnsscrim

I use it a lot despite being from a euro clan, we've had many a good game with us clans

The quakenet irc equivalent is #ns.search or #ns.pcw

There is no problem with IRC.

All you have to do is ask your clan to be on a certain time, and tell them you will scrim. Once all of your members are in IRC, go to #findnsscrim, and those clans who are 'diehard' will be more than happy enough to scrimm you.

As long as everyone uses #findnsscrim, there will always be avalible clans to scrim. It's a great concept, I could only wish more clans used it.

Yea, IRC is great......FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!
  • BeasterBeaster Join Date: 2003-08-06 Member: 19111Members
well I agree with both sides, #findnsscrim is great for a last second scrim, but our clan also likes having planned scrims, my idea behind this is to be able to go to the site, browse times, and challenge (email is sent out to opposing teams captain, and hopefully it will be a go, I am also adding a section so that you can simply go to site, click "Play Now" and see if there are any clans ready to go (I know this isn't very good idea, trying to think of better way)
Despite my clan mates comments rallying for this system I understand this is not for everyone, let me get a working BETA up hopefully by next week, and I can let everyone give it a whirl. This will most likely be a smaller community of clans at the start, but hopefully I can make it easy enough for everyone (if not, I will modify it for our own clans' purposes <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> anyways thanks for the input from everyone <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (even if it is all comments about #findnsscrim being better heh heh, but if anyone has an feature ideas jsut let me know)

I really like this idea. I think that a webpage for scrims would be dope. I am not exactly sure how you plan on setting it up. I think it would be ideal for [UVic] to ave a scrim page on our website that is set up as a calander. Members could log on and view this calander, and sign there names to days that they would be available for scrims. Then any other person can view the calander and see who is available for scrims. I think that this idea is straying away from your idea of making a master page for all clans, but would definately help [UVic] become more organized when it comes to scrims. Maybe after testing it out you could configure it to be a public service for clans or just rogue players as well.

yeah something I am thinking about adding, is a feature that, once a challenge has been issued, emails are sent to both teams rosters, and they can go to site, and log whether they can play or not, that way teams captains can verify that they have enough before match (this is only as useful as clan members are reliable...) this was suggested by some one else, but thought it was a good idea, and easy enough to add in <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

sorry, last time I went to #findnsscrim, it was a bunch of little kids cussing alot and talking about what gorges would look like with breasts and how they wish they could see ns pr0n and stuff. Never going back thank you

geeze, they edit t-i-t-s (sorry bout the swear filter, mods, this was a shameless workaround)

I would also side with #findnsscrim. Our clan gets 3+ scrims a day off of it.
  • BeasterBeaster Join Date: 2003-08-06 Member: 19111Members
well the only way to show everyone what I mean will be to show you a working site <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
I hope to have it in BETA stages by end of august (bigger than I thought it would be! so having it done by next week was a little ambitious heh heh, although so far I have it planned to be a pretty simple system, only takes literally 20 seconds to go to site, check for scrims, challenge, and close browser <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Most clans that I have observed dont spend the time to set up scrims. They scrim so much they just spam the channel and ushally get a response withen a minute. The website seems like a good idea but scheduled scrims seem to always fall short when you try to accumilate many scrims every day. Unless your site has some other system set up i'm not sure how you can compete with irc. *Sadface I h88888 irc*

yeah, my clan has same problem, with setting times, then not showing up <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> well not just us, and yeah would be hard to compete with IRC, I also plan an setting up a clan section, so clans without a webpage can have their own section, post news, set practice times, nto sure exactly how to do it yet, and what to include <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> but yeah I am trying to think of user friendly features to draw more people, all suggestions are welcome <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

bah, [nc] will scrimm you, though we're just a group of friends right now, not an official clan.
