I like all of the new maps except mineshaft. I just plain don't like it... kind of a low-ceiling feel, close quartes, ugly, etc. All of these describe a mineshaft, but I just don't enjoy playing it

Well, like alot of guys I dident like the changes at first but, To be truthfull I have gotten use to them and like most of them. Mineshaft is probley my favorite. Only map that I can honestly say that i dislike is NS_Hera.
I have played alot of differnt incarnations of Hera but I feel that this one is ah, my least favorite (is that an ok way to say it?) I would REALLY like to see another version of it produced by Merkabe As it use to be a really fun map.

I dislike the new eclipse, it used to be my favorite map, the new spawn just makes it feel so small...especially with no doors.

(and if you noticed, the old maps also had some things cut out of them in order to make things smoother) Maybe that is why you feel that these new maps arnt doing it for you. I, personally, enjoy all the new maps (the updated version of lost is nice, mineshaft is decent and veil is good times) except I have some game play problems with ns_origin. That map is not Onos friendly at all. There is only one way out of each hive as an Onos (better hope they are on that side or else you have to go around -- if you can), there is a massive vent system that I've seen marines use more than the aliens - and once the marines are in the vents - Onos is worthless, also in the ventilation hive I've seen many-an-onos get stuck after redeming on the railings. In the big picture, its a small thing - but when I am Onos on this map it just frustrates me.

Agreed on the eninitys thingy

To be honest, I wish they hadn't because I really would rather have it run a lil less smooth and still get that immersive feel, especially on Caged now :-\ It all looks... Cartoonish

To me it seems confrontation is always more imminent and that there is less "room" in these maps, overall it seems the corridors are more cramped and even the big areas are smaller.
It could be that I am just imagining things but that is how they FEEL.
This is not a bad thing, merely different.
As a cloaked skulk I seem to have much less "play" when it comes to running and hiding than in the 1.x series. Once more, may just be me.
On the other hand I will say that some of the maps that got a makeover now look AMAZING. Some of the fx/lighting is just plain amazing.
Couldn't say if I like the new maps or not right now because it will take time to get used to them.
Just my 2c.

I agree, the early game is what I think was hit the worst. Granted skulking is a lil better now, but it doesn't matter, I just don't seem to enjoy the early game because theres always cramped action, not as many high and hard to see places to ambush from etc

One must admit that mineshaft is incredably well made (i say this as a mapper) and seriously ive had loads of fun on all the new maps and in my opinion it all that counts...

I liked the feel of the old lost better than the new lost... err like the old one was carefully planned and drawn beforehand for maximum coolness, only in the 2.0 version it was mucked around with fopr balance reasons.. or something >.>

still love caged though, there something about that map, and I've learnt almost every corner of it. woe betide the marine team vs a killer goanna on caged...

origin is now my favorite
bast next
I liked old eclipse
and ns_nirvana

I never liked lost, although it has some nice window views, it needs more of that and less random long hallways; los paranoias hallway with the boxes is interesting tho, reminded me of an unreal tournament custom map ^^

mineshaft is well made and detailed but.. a labyrinth, and not my style

origin's ventilation hive needs a massive visual overhaul, it's quite boring although its architecture is interesting and its ambient sound is excellent. The other parts of the map can become even better with tweaks; it is already my fave map.

there are a bunch of custom maps that have interesting areas to them and some places have a good feel, but overall they still need work

I think more maps need to be made with extensive Z axis action and fantastic landscapes. Some could experiment with a monumental feel with massive structures as well, although not for all maps. Other feels/ideas could be something like bast or System Shock 2.

I personally am no longer scared as a marine because I know where aliens are likely to hide and what to expect most of the time. Albeit that kind of sucks, its the price you pay for having experience.

God, don't we all miss that fear of having something drop on our heads and nibble on our skulls. I miss that dearly, but unfortunately, I don't think that can ever happen again either.

But back to the maps... I don't think that fear was what drove the atmosphere in those maps. Well, maybe it was. The maps had smaller corridors, easier to ambush people. What I seem to notice about the remakes of the new maps is they have been widened, lost some curves and detail, and made a bit brighter (I almost get the feeling of playing Quake or unreal tournament). Because of this, I often feel like I'm in a death match level rather than a space ship or colony. Not all the maps have lost this feeling, and I do love Mineshaft, although I feel that because of the new game play, a lot of the level gets virtually unused. Come to think of it, the difference in atmosphere may be because of the new style of game being played. In the past, aliens, at the beginning of the round, had to keep the gorge alive as well as keep the marines out of other hives. Now, the instant the game starts, the aliens scatter in all directions, often alone. The new maps get explored quite extensively by the aliens, but because the marines seem to be turtling behind turrets now more than they did before, that fear of popping out into a group of hmgs, or the joy of hiding in a corner and eating some unsuspecting victim is lost. I do miss the old maps, I miss the old game play, but I have to admit, some of the remakes have wonderful improvements and interesting additions.

One last thing. I kind of miss the water in Computer Core though (I forget the map name, but it’s the only one with a computer core hive)

Tighter and darker maps are more fun for me, too. Darker in particular. However, I think the only reason new maps don't seem to have so much immersion is the mini-map. You don't anymore need to learn (i.e. get immersed into) the map so much to avoid getting lost.

I personally like all the new maps, with teh exception of ns_lost.
Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely map, but there is a slight balance issue with cargo hive - ie the ease for marines to spawncamp it . Could be fixed with a simple placing of a few more crates , aside from that it's cool.
I love veil as a skulk, so many smooth walls to run along ^-^

my only annoyance is that every transparant space seems to still block you like a wall ;/

To me, a lot of the reason why I feel skulking is nerfed is that dark corners doesn't matter anymore. The marine minimap shows all aliens in LOS, hidden in dark shadows or not. That's not something fixed in 2.01x, bw.

minimap too good atm... i'm hoping maybe for an upgrade you have to buy[/offtopic]

I so far have not won a game as marines on mineshaft... the map looks cool and all but i think the map itself isnt balanced... IDK maybe its just me... but other than that all 2.0's maps are thirteen thirty-seven.

I like mineshaft alot except that I don't know it yet, and marine start is a little irritating.

I do not like origin, even though it's a neat map, its really big, and hard to get marines/onos anywhere because of all the vents that make up primary travel routes. Also, the text on the vents is just tacky, in my opinion. A small plaque next to it that says "Industrial sector" would be better than bright red letters over the vent.

I don't like lost. It seems that there are two kinds of areas on lost. Obnoxiously long/big areas, where marines dominate everything (cargo hive, hall to equilibrium, the hall near los paranoias, the GINORMOUS hallway from ms to los paranoias.) And Tight close-quarters parts where skulks will win. (Los-paranoias to alpha, marine start to coolant distribution.) There really aren't very many areas to hide and ambush people, or middle-of-the-road areas where no side has an advantage. Also, all the hallways are twisted around in a very illogical manner.

The revamped maps (and new ones) dissapointed me because they took out alot of the weldable stuff and doors that used to be fun. On caged I used to use the doors from ms to stability to seperate marines from their squad. I guess I can understand if they needed to take out some of this stuff, but not all. I like the idea of having weldable objectives that make life painful for the aliens

I think I dislike Veil of all of them simply because of the lack of eyecandy. It's just flat bare walls.

those that dislike the new maps just arent used to change. Give it a month or two and you may start to enjoy them.
good job to the mappers in my opinion, and if you really think you dont like any of the maps, make your own.
