I keep getting this RPC error and it keeps resetting my PC whenever I connect to the net
HELP!
I'll edit more stuff in soon...
Some **** called MSblast is running now. (Yeah... sounds bloody wonderful) JediYoshi was having the same prob I think
Can SOMEBODY research the following 2 things for me:
msblast.exe
syscfg32
Getting that file with getright SnO0Py. Hope that's it.

Oh wait, there are constant holes found in linux. Some are quite legendary, like a kerberos buffer overrun vulnerability that was missed by the 'far-better' opensource development community for <b>10 years</b>...
Kids, all OS's have issues with security. ALL. When you just mouth popular stuff to look cool, it makes the baby thorvald cry. Get the real story and think for yourselves, or go back to your sunnyD.
Nobody was complaining about the copious amounts of security exploits out there, I just needed a fix for this bug... We KNOW every OS comes with a zillion loopholes for jerks to exploit. This post was simply a cry for help from a particular nasty one ;(
I couldn't do a search for it either, as I had about a minute between resets. So I was limited to a "OMG HALP INF!~!!!~~!!" style post... Forgive me ;p

Anyway my theory is similar, all OS have security issues, all OS have bugs.
Because Windows has such a huge marketshare you see a proportional representation of bugs and haxs for it. Thats why linux seems so secure, cause it has a much smaller marketshare and not as many people write malicious code for it.
But yeh, security is a big issue. Please download the patch to fix this problem.

As for spacemonkey, I do not 'love' microsoft any more than I 'hate' linux. I do hate people making big wide generalizations about technical issues they have no understanding of though. And yes, that is because of my engineer background.

I admit, my post said "MS vulnerabilities", but that was all - there was no long rant or even suggestion that MS is the only one that sucks. I just said MS in this particular instance because the OS vulnerability in question was in fact from an OS made by Microsoft, colloquially called "MS". No dollar sign was typed or implied.
The point I was making was really what you were saying, MonsE, though I was trying to make it more succinctly: OSes have holes. The best way to keep those holes from getting exploited is to make sure nobody ever sees them in the first place. A firewall saying "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" works wonders.
You must admit however that you do have a certain fondness for Windows. If you dont mind being quoted:

Its not something you have to be ashamed of. You are allowed to take sides.
I must admit that I like Windows, infact I read your guide and implimented some of the more feasible suggestions. However, I do run a duel boot on my personal computer, and the dedicated server I help run is linux.
Best if this thread disappears quickly hey? Just put a note up on ReadyRoom.org to patch your systems and let it be left at that.

Oh well, it's all a matter of preference I suppose... I use Windows because I was 'raised' on it's GUI after DOS went the way of the Dodo, I like the way it's layed out and that's pretty much all there is too it...

With my second try, I disconnected the modem, then there was no problem. Thought to myself, "**** hacker. Wait a minute, the newspaper said something about a Micrsoft update a while ago... maybe that's it."
So I reconnect the modem, seems things are fine *phew*, then start up Windows Update. Then while the update is installing, I get hit by the firewall warning again. "Crap! Must disconnect modem before the RPC kicks in... DAMN, TOO LATE"
After that last restart though, I was fine. Even though the update wasn't finished installing, it must of installed enough, cause all the critical updates got installed.
HAH!

the odd thing though was that it asked me permission to grant access to some program trying to get net access "Trivial File Transfer Protocol". I said no, but the error still got though. I guess it was some other software that already had automatic access which allowed to attack to get through...

No it isnt. It entirely depends on how the system is coded. A good software firewall is as good as a hardware one when it comes to security. In theory. Malicious code that can bypass a software firewall might as well bypass your hardware firewall. I might be wrong, but reasons for having firewalls separated from the things they are supposed to wall off against are made out of caution. For the private user, havign a software firewall is still a good idea if you are on a permanent connection.
