Running Hlds From A Ram Drive...

I'll be setting up a server soon which I'd like to run both DOD and NS on -- my only concern is the lag period experienced during map changes. In order to combat this I was doing some thinking.

Has anyone tried running HLDS from a ram drive? What issues (if any) did you encounter?

I personally would not be so concerned about the amount of time the map change takes on the server. Making the server map change occur very very fast just slightly reduced the time it takes for players that are connecting. The client machines still have to go to their harddrives for the map in question.

if you do make a ram disk...just mount the maps folder...everything else leave on the HD

If the server's disk is the bottleneck, then go for it. My assumption is that most clients won't see any difference, as their machines will take longer to switch maps then the server. Worthy of an experiment though. The standard warning for RAMdisks applies: don't put any data on a non-battery-protected RAMdisk that you can't afford to lose. An entire HLDS setup is trivial to backup and restore, so that really isn't a concern. I for one am curious if the client experience will improve

I'm considering the ram drive approach because I can't afford SCSI and I don't want one server to lag out while the other is changing maps

Does the idea have merit? Will it work?

I use NFS for my /home mount. so map changes are usually pretty fast. This is a good alternative to a slow harddisk instead of RAM disk (mainly due to the fact that is the game server dies the data is still intact)
