Funniest ( And Longest ) Game Ever.

bahahhaha.
i just played as commander for the first time in ns2.0, and the game lasted about 3hours. i tried a tactic that i asked about before ( 2 tf's electrified and about 6 turrets at each res node we get ) and i ended up having 4 res nodes totaly secured. my res was flowing so damn quick. but one thing i forgot to do was. LOCKDOWN A HIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. after the first hour it poped into my head that i need to secure a hive but spent 1 hour trying to do this. i spoiled my team with HA + hmg's and then they just werent listning at all. ide give em all ha + hmg + a ha with GL and was instructing them towards a hive, the walked threw to about 4 of my waypoints then desided to go there own damn way and they all got devoured some where along the way, even though i was scanning everywhere they walked and telling them where the onos was hiding etc..etc....

so after about 13 or 14 failed attempts at pushing for a hive i gave up and tried to seige, that also failed because they were all trying to build at once without covering each other. after the seige attempts failed i dropped about 300 turrets and had blocked all the entrances in our base with comm chairs and spammed about 20 tf on the gournd. and the aliens couldent do a god damn thing about it.

so after this first commanding game for me, i learnt 2 things.

1.never spoile your team with weapons.

2. ( to the ppl that think everyone should build at once because its faster ) DONT DOO IT!, because a bunch of skulks can eat you AND your buildings quicker then you can build them!.

so anways, just wondering if anyone has played a game that lasted longer then about 3 hours ?

Dunno bout the timings for em both... But ive played a few long games - the 2 most memorable being 1 from 1.04, and another from 2.0.

    the 1.04 game:

This was on tanith, and while we got off to a bad start (i was marines), we managed to get satcomm taken over and locked down. The next task was to set about securing res nodes while fighting off endless streams of skulks (this was an 8 v 8 on my clans server) and the odd lerk. About one hour into the game, we decided to take waste, deciding to anihilate one of the alien hives. The job of taking down the hive was given to me, and another one of my clans member, as we were both very good with team work (always covered each other when reloading/building/etc). We were fitted out with hmgs/jp and went off to waste. We took it down with little resistance, thanks to a diversion in cargo. By the time aliens realised what we were doing, it was too late. We already had a phase in waste, and were bringing in the reinforcements. Soon we had a completely secure hive. or so we thought. For the next hour we kept swapping back and forth ownership of Waste, untill our brave comm decided he was gonna join the battle for a while. This resutled in me, my other clan member and the comm rushing to fusion with hmg/jps and taking that down, then quickly to waste to finish off the remaining aliens.

That was a fun battle, that lasted about 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

    The 2.0 game:

This was on ns_origin, and had me, another member of my clan, someone else from another clan working as a team, and yet another one of my clan as comm, who listened to requests well (scan room, health, ammo etc). The game started well, with my squad moving out and securing res and a hive. It took a while, and several shotguns, but we got there in the end - i was sent to grab the hive on my own, (obviously the comm was a trusting guy.... coz i usually crack under that kinda pressure, but he was there for me with health and ammo) while the other two stayed and secured the double res. With one hive secure (biodome i believe) we moved off to Furnace, and proceeded to take that down. This on the other hand took longer than expected as the aliens had built up a substantial defence outside of it. <insert several more shotguns and medpacks>. When it was finally taken, secured, and linked up to our phase gate network, we returned to main base and picked up some ha/welders. This was about 40 mins into the game i think. We started to move out to the final hive, but ended up heading back to furnace to get rid of a large infestation of onii and fades. This was quickly taken care of with level 3 shotguns, and backup from a couple of the other marines. When we had it secure again, we started the long fight to take down ventilation hive. This took a fair amount of sneaking, medpacking, scanning, welding and ammo drops. One of the group died, then received a grenade launcher to make taking the hive down much easier. When we met up again, we proceeded through a vent, dont know where, but it lead to the out side of vent. Here we found a large amount of oc's, sc's, and dc's as they had taken furnace long enough to put up some dc's. The battle here went on for about 20 minutes before we managed to even get near the hive, but then it was all downhill for the aliens at that point, as there were now 7 of us in the room.

All in all, both VERY good, fun games.

I hope to have more of them aswell.

I don't even know how long some games were I've played, but I do wonder wth I've been doing the whole evening when I notice it's 2 am while I have to get out of bed @ 7...... NS is a very tricky game considering gametime.
3 hours is mighty long though

    2v2, 01:00 -> 04:00. ish.

surprisingly, we all look on that game with REALLy good memories. yes, NS doesnt work properly with 2v2, but its still a great game.

the longest game i have participated (and later only watched via HLSW) was on ns_tanith and lastes for 6 hours. After 1 hour of play the aliens crushed the rines base but the rines builded up a base into a vent near the hive next to double res. As the vent to the hive was weldered there was only one way out (and in). The rines plastered the vent continiously with nades so a Fade had a lifetime of 1 - 3 secs and Onos weren't able to enter the vent.

So aliens weren't able to win and rines weren't even able to leave the vent without getting killed.

The rines refused to surrender and so the game lasts about this long time. After 2 hours "rines in vent"-bashing i left the server and checked from time to time if a new map has started. After 3+ hours finally a new map has started so i was able to rejoin my favorite server.

Aliens need some siege to prevent such situations

I've played a good 3 to 4 hour game once or twice. The one I have in mind was quite easily the BEST game I have ever played.
Wish i started the demo earlier than 2.5 hours into it =(
Anywho, I was on marines and we had a commander that new what he was doing. AND we had marines that could listen. We were on Hera, which is a hard enough map as it is. Fresh to 2.0, I was a little surprised when I got a shotgun almost initially. I was even more surprised at how well it hurt skulks when they were not smart enough to try to duck and weave. After securing base with turrets, we moved out to Entrance and Reception, and built it up as best we could with the little resources we had left. Only enough for about 4 turrets after the node and TF, unfortunately, but we pressed on. We made our way to Holoroom, but it was swarming with cloaked gorges, skulks, and oc's. We couldn't push through this early, but we kept everyone who was alive pushing at it. The men that died, upon respawning, IMMEDIATELY headed to ventilation, which was totally empty because of the battle going on at Holoroom. We managed to cap the node in maintenance along the way, but didn't bother defending it. Within a short while, we had the hive pretty well secured and were getting in enough resources to get HA/GL to attack the holoroom, which the Kharaa were VERY stubbornly defending. But we built up a seige behind the boxes, giving us just enough room to bounce all kinds of nades around the corners. Once we got around the corner, we ran into a team of an onos and about 3 fades. It was rough, but we managed to push them back without losing more than 2 ha's. The battle and the subsequent reinforcing left us quite drained, and locking down holoroom became quite difficult. The Kharaa had enough sense to try and skulk rush us, and they almost managed to do it but for some clever turret placements by our fearless leader.
    -----------====Intermission====---------------
After locking down holo, and having a few brief skirmishes, we notice that it got VERY quiet. Expecting a massive rush, we fell back to Ventilation, thinking that the Kharaa would try to take the hive by massive onos rush. And they did. Too bad for them, onos are easily knocked off of tiny platforms and then picked at by turrets. A massive network of about 5 or 6 phase gates kept us constantly on the front lines. The problem was, they had us stopped. They weren't taking anything from us, but we werent about to take there's either. After some half hour of skirmishes, both sides almost instantly launched a MASSIVE attack on the same spot, as part of some uncanny coincidence. It was at least 4 onos and several fades and battle gorges doind battle with about 8 heavy marines, with a mix of weapons. Hungry onos took quite a toll on our Heavies, but they hadn't invested in movements and thus weren't able to recall, so we got a few of them back--a little roughed up. The fades were the larger threat, as there were 1 or 2 who really had the knack down for Blink. Me and my GL had a tough time except for my BEST SHOT EVER. I launched a nade right into the face of a fade that rounded the corner, out of a large chunk of luck, and killed him. GL + Fade's Face = Goo on walls. The battle raged into the area surrounding holo (which was the fated battleground of the day, for whatever reason) with both sides putting up a valiant effort. In the end, we had managed to push them back to a hive. After that, their wills seemed to be broken, and we took them out with some sieges and some nice nading.
Once the second hive was down, we secured and taking the third proved simple with their resource production being significantly damaged and there team accepting loss. Best....Game....EVER!

You should be Banned from ever being a Commander again!

Not only could you have crashed the server, something that kinda p1sses off Admins, but you did something very lame! Making a last stand, doesn't mean you have to be lame about it!
CC walls are a banable offence on almost every server!
Farms are also a Banable offence on most servers!

If you have no choice but to retreat back into base, do it smartly!
Put up 6 turrets at each door and give your teammates HA and GLs and get them to spam nades, this will keep all the Oni away, and they will start to go fade instead, making for a much better last stand!

Don't do things like Farms or CC walls.

If you need to learn something from that, it should be doing things like that will drag out a game you have already lost!
But your right, don't just give out HA and guns, give it to the ppl who listen to you!

I hope you try tactics nect time and not farms and walls to keep a game going!

longest game I ever was involved in lasted well over 5 hours..

classic setup, all resnodes save one in marine spawn where alien, but with well over 40 turrets plus a couple of hmg/gl made it last forever!

we allmost would have lost by default as aliens started quiting, but luckily a few reinforcements came through that swung momentum back our way..
then, one or two marines also quit, giving us a slight advantage, and after we took out their final res it was only a matter of time before they got wasted..

I had a few long games in both 1.04 and 2.0. The 1.04 games really stood out because it was really rare to see one team absolutely dominate (such as the aliens getting 3 hives) only to have a select squad of marines sneak out a back door and take out a hive, then slowly expand. In 2.0, I see that happen a lot more, and the games seem to be able to go anyway you could imagine. I always find it humorous to pop onto a pub game, only to find that I have all three upgrades availible as an alien, but only one hive. That shows that a lot of good fighting has gone on.

Plain and simple, I love these long games of, essentially, tug-of-war (as long as they are consistently fun and not 3 hours of beating my way into a base as a gorge)
