Catching Virii From Infected/malicious Servers?

Ever had it happen?
Recently I disposed of an annoying virus, and considering that I didnt download/transfer anything suspicious recently, I'm curious if it wasent a file that a server forced me to download (map files, sounds, ect).

if anyone has ever contracted a virus from a malicious/infected server, I'd like to hear about it.

This is a ridiculous notion. I've never heard of something like this before.

Well it's not that ridiculous at all.
You could use the .res files to make clients download any file from your server... and with the right plugins installed you may also be able to execute that file "activating" a virus that way.

    BUT

I've never heared of such a thing.
And even if a server admin would do such a thing, a good virus scanner would/should immediatly react (and everybody SHOULD use a virus scanner).

So you see: it IS possible, but not very likely...

-_- A virus would most unlikely make everyone aliens or flying onos.... it's probably some plugin someone made. I mean look at what Voogru can do! Armories giving health, manable turrets, etc...

Yeah I recently discovered how important it is to run a virus checker, I used to stop it running for those extra few FPS but now it stays on all the time, just in case

... and remember to update your subscription. I got a virus exactly four days after mine ran out. I'm sure Symantec sent it to me.

    Har Har.
I'm not talking about something that affects gameplay.
someone could put a keystroke logger, or generally annoying virus on your computer using a NS server with a little effort, as Hypergrip explained.

Granted it isnt likely, unless the server op hated NS (i.e.the creator of the Q3 aimbot's explaination for his actions "i hate Q3 blahblahblah blippity blah") or wanted to install a worm, trojan, ect that could be activated later on in order to **** you off/get back at you if you did something like devour him/tear him apart ingame.

Is it possible to send executables? If not, then it's pretty near impossible. The only way to get a virus in this way was if for some reason you have a program which treats *.bsp files (or wavs, mdl, whatever) as *.vbs files (or some other sort of script file which are run using ANOTHER application).

Even if you can send executables, I doubt it's possible to create a server side plugin to execute applications on the client's machine, though, I don't know for sure. If you can then it's a major security risk and needs to be fixed.

Download the file, yes (maybe)... but run it? I'm not so sure. If that was possible, I doubt a virus scanner would detect a custom program made to delete everything in a directory... or a trojan program. If this was true then it's a huge security breach. Therefore I doubt that it could work.

i dont mean to be a troll, but yes yes and yes u can

i could go into massive postgrad detail but tbh, simply log into a few servers and wtahc for the login echos " note this server is set to run files on your computer" even my mother on her patronisingly locked-down NT workstation at home can understand that message.

it worries me that <our computerised society> is still so very naive

    @original poster

1)Doesn't matter that you downloaded something RECENTLY. You could of downloaded an infected file much earlier.

2)Are you using Internet Explorer? Do you at least have IE setup to be semi-secure? What about outlook? IE and Outlook are exploit ridden, I use Mozilla, you should too.

You got that message wrong dude, it is:

Note: This server is set to run commands on your client.

What is your client? Half-life. Now if you can delete files on someone's harddrive(besides config files for Half-life), or other things, using Half-life, than yes, there is a big security risk there.

Server admins can run commands on the client, and this means that some amount of damage can be done. Like 'bind mouse1 quit' or 'unbind all', but if you set your config.cfg to read only then this doesn't really matter.

As for as I know, though, you can't execute files or even upload executables to client machines (though I may be wrong there).

    [grammar nazi]

It's not virii. For one thing it implies that the singular form is "virius" - if you insist on using the -i pluralisation it would need to be "viri" - and for another I don't think these boards have many people posting in Latin. The plural of virus is viruses.
