Ns Vs Dod

cpu usage
I really, really like NS. My computer, on the other hand, hates it. I run it in 400 * 300, with every single frickin thing disabled. I'm thinking of downloading DoD, but because of my dial up connection, its gonna take me 16 and a half hours. How much CPU usage does DoD require, vs say TFC or NS?

Anyway if you want them, here are my system specs:

Windows 2000 Professional
Intel Pentium III ~590Mhz
DirectX 9.0b
Ati Rage Mobility M1 8.0mb
Yamaha DS-XG
128MB RAM

As for a rough estimation of what my CPU can handle, it can handle a 5 player StarCraft game, but definately not 8.

Guys, I'm just looking for a rough estimate.
The words "less" or "more" or "much much more" will do just fine.

its going to be really hard to run ANY game with an 8 meg video card, you can get a ati radeon 9000 pro 128 meg for like $70 now if you got the money that would definetly be the best thing to go for to get things to run smoother

anyway on the dod thing it probably uses less because it isnt as complex and detailed

Yeah... See, the problem with laptops is that they all have specially modified video cards to deal with the super thin monitors etc. And lucky me, my model of computer was so full of suck that they discontinued making video card updates for it. So the only way for me to get a new video card would be to just go all the way and get a new computer pentium IIII etc. etc. and that costs hundreds of dollars that I don't have.

DoD is buggy. Version 1.0 has alot of bugs in it that cause many problems (one of which lowers ure fps alot). Download it sure, its a great game, i bought retail cause its so good, but dont be upset, cause it has minor issues with it that as we speak are being fixed.

Alright then Thanks a bunch, NS was good while it lasted.

I'll probably come back to it every now and then, but seriously, i can't do squat unless they make every turret look like a gray cube.

16.5 hour long sleepless night, here we come ! ! one

dod will kill your cpu like NS.

in ns, because of all the buildings and stuff, it lags like crap

in dod, because of the HUGE TEXTURE LOAD, not to mention the above-mentioned 1.0 bugs, it will lag like crap

it usually takes about twice as long to load a dod-lan game than a ns-lan game

and plus, the default dod models LOOK LIKE CRAP, you might be lured into downloading custom models, which will take your cpu down the toilet.

I find HL mods to be very CPU-dependent vs vidcard or mem dependent. HL was made before the T&L Geforce days, so any super fast video cards still chug when they have to render stuff the hard way. CPU speed really helps, as does a little more memory. You can prob double you laptop memory for less than 30 bucks, and I really recommend getting a super-cheap dell desktop or something. Last I saw, 2.4 gigahertz dell desktops sold for less than 400 after a 200 dollar rebate, so just watch dealsea.com for a good deal and spring for it and it should be the end of your woes. I play on an 800 mhz p3 with a geforce 2 and ~400 mb memory and NS and DOD run fine at 1078*786 res. I play on 56k too, but then again it's all about getting a good 56k ISP (yes, they still exist) and tuning your connection.

Make sure your truform is disabled Caiman. Change ati_npatch and ati_subdiv (found in your config.cfg) to 0 if you haven't already. You'll find that DoD will run quite a bit better on your computer than NS does, but not as smooth as TFC. (keep in mind that all depends on the map you're playing of course.)
