The Problem With Sensory.

<div class="IPBDescription">Aliens should use a diffrent 1st chamber</div> Well after playing LOTS of 2.0 games I can say that over 90% of the time aliens choose Sensory as their first chamber. This may seem like the best idea for aliens however as a marine commander I have used this knowledge to beat the aliens 9 out of 10 games.

Let me state the problem with Sensory First: Sensory Upgrades suck for fighting marine bases and turret farms. Sensory's strength lies in ambushing.

When commanding I go straight for a 2 hive lockdown when aliens have sense, (Getting all the res and electrifying it along the way).

Onos fall with ease when they don’t have a movement or defense upgrade and a few 20 res Observatories make all the time they spent covering the map in sense chambers useless.

I find it still rather easy too win even with a 1 hive lock down (as long as you protect your res) because aliens usually get defense over movement. Therefore they can't teleport to hives that are under attack.

I find that as aliens Movement is a better 1st chamber choice than sensory. Silence allows you to be stealthy in the early game, Celerity allows you to scout better, and Adrenaline allows you too turn the attack power up, and when the 2nd hive goes up you have a great way of getting back and forth between your two hives. Should the marines camp the 3rd hive you will be able to get Defense chambers as well and have the best two upgrades for driving them out.

Sensory has only 1 upgrade I'd ever use: Cloaking. Pheromones? Who needs it. Scent of Fear? I tried using it once and it didn't seem to do anything. Silence would be a much more effective upgrade for sensory.

    ... > attack > expand > defend > attack > ...
Attack = Movement chambers. Fades. JP. Shootgun. Observatories.
Expand = Sensory chambers. Onos. TF. GL+Mines. Sieges. Electrifiing.
Defend = Defense chambers. Lerks. HA. HMG+Welder. Turrets.
NS strategy can be soo easy.

Sens first only works because comms dont use scanner sweeps , MT and there are too many ignorant rambos on publics.
And I ALWAYS get called an "IDIOT" on publics when I drop MC first.

sounds like a good tactic, i usually play as aliens and sensory first is not always the best option. I find scilence better becasue once you have killed 1 mariene u can take out more because it confuses them so much.

SoF is by far the best sensory upgrade for any alien class. It detects any marines in range, and shows them on hive sight as if they were parasited. The reason you thought it did nothing was that there weren't nay marines around you when you used it.

Silence or Celerity Fade = I took out a whole squad of marines from behind, when they had big bad-**** guns. Not a single one could draw a bead on me.

Berger, I thought SoF only detected injured marines...

God some ppl **** me off on pubs. I keep saying Move first is better. Then they start saying "NO SENSE IS BETTER YOU NUB" Fortunately the marines normally have a nub comm as well so its an easy game. I still think the game would go MUCH faster if Moves were first (plus i could just box them in as a lerk.)

Scent of fear really makes sense as scout.
And nothing beats a digesting onos with a scent of fear trail coming off its ****.

sensory is popular because you can hide what you are building i think

but it is so cool to have people argue which is better
    sensory or movement :-)

that was the point of this release to make aliens use different upgrades
    in different orders

defense is ignored right now but i bet it will become popular again as time goes on.
i still use its upgrades if available

I agree with you king all 3 chambers are viable just as Flay wanted, I only say that movement is a better choice right now because the marines expect sensory first.

BTW: I usually get the NOOB comments when I want movement first so I do the American thing and gorge and drop a Movement in the hive before the first sensory is laid.

I think sensory is good for newbie players, or a alien team that can't work together well. An expert alien team would use movement. I ussually use sens first in public games...unless I know my team is well rounded. But u are correct a good commander can take advantage of the sens upgrade first.

Sensory first is only a good idea if the marine comm is a noob and doesn´t scan and your team can be absolutley sure to get all 3 hives. If not Fades and onos are weakened without the upgrades from DC/MC. And once comms get smarter and learn how to counter sensory the aliens will loose a lot more games than now. Best chamber order in my opinion is MC/DC/SC. Movement is a great first chamber if your skulks have a brain and dont just stand around like if they would have SC. Silence owns as skulk because they cant hear you bite and move so if your first bite misses due to lag or lack of skill you get a second chance but with sens marines hear your footsteps if you move and turn around after the sound of your first chomp. The difficult part about silence is to get behind a marine. once you are there hes dead. Just hang on ceilings and behind boxes to surprise them. And a Marine that doesn´t hear incoming footsteps sounds usually isn´t as cautious giving you plenty of opportunities to get at their back

The PT/Vets called it. They said peeps were gonna use sensory first for a while, and then mature into other chambers. I personally like sensory because of scent of fear, and I think build order should be movement sensory, then defence, or sensory, movement, then defence. I haven't really come across a biting need for defense early on yet. The gameplay is so much different from 1.04.

sens is still powerful early cus not enough comms have adapted yet, btw veen when cloaked their names show up in red so aim all over hallways and you'll find em while cloaked. But I'm seeing more and more 2 hive lockdowns where d makes your life much easier than sens or movement. I'm starting to advise more people to not drop chambers at all until we start 2nd hive (which is really early anyways)

The way I see it at the moment is that sensory leads to an easier beginning but hurts you in the mid to late game as you don't have the more aggressive upgrades for your higher lifeforms. So you have to rough it in the early game with defence or movement to get the easier end game (sensory first is what I think creates the long coming alien wins in the main).

Sensory for the moment is only good for hiding... and has been that way since 1.0 even.... early game you need to get on the move and hold/patrol hives.

Plus you have to realize that the chambers have to be viable later in the game... carapace and adren have worked for me since 1.0 ... and this is no different. Once those 2 are up it takes a full squad to even get close to killing me. With the addition of metabolism it just added to my tactics... the biggest boost to fades ever. It is the ultimate squad killer... onos are for heavies and turrets

You forget that sens is also great for o chambers: it isn't just skulks that can ambush with sens, but also fades and most importantly onos. There is nothing more demoralizing than knowing that there is an onos nearby that can decloak, devour, then disappear again.
  • MrKNifeyMrKNifey Join Date: 2003-06-25 Member: 17668Members
I agree that all chambers are viable at 1 hive, as it was meant to be. Defense chambers are neglected due to the greatly reduced health of OCs. Movements are also a pretty good tool in setting up ambushes. Have people forgot about silence? Sensory, yeah it's attractive to cloak all buildings within range, but seriously....can anyone set up a REAL ambush.....without cloak?

I can agree with this idea, but I think its a bit off, see what you think of this instead.

Attack/Expand= Defese chambers(carapace for attack, redem for attack, regen for defense(quick health without having to get a gorge)
Defend/Attack= Movement(Silence for defense, celerity for attack, adren for both)
Expand/Defend= Sensory (clocking for defense, SoF for attack)

I think the strategy is even deeper, as each chamber has a two part focus, but not enough to not leave it open to a direct counter, as you already did a great job of showing.

Although I do like silence, the problem is that the marines' minimap will show you 'silently' sneaking up behind them. In one game, I waited in a vent, heard the marine walk by, silently slipped down behind him and gave chase. The marine suddenly turned around and shot me in the face. -My only conclusion is that I was spotted on the minimap or the marine was incredibly lucky to check his back at that moment.

If the team decides on sensory first then I immediately go gorge and drop sensories near the first res towers the marines are likely to take. I then go back to skulk and rack up the kills as the marines fall into my trap.

Sure the comm can scan, but then I run away until the scan ends. Then I eat the res tower. In the early game, an observatory has little energy for repeat scans.

The problem would lie in the marines finding your sensory chamber and destroying it. I guess that means you have to be creative with your chamber placement.

All in all, if you choose sensory first then you must be prepared to ambush the marines before they can farm up an area, thus eliminating the need for adrenaline bile-bombing.
After all, the comm can only scan so much...

I had a few really crummy games where MC was the first Chmaber, but I have a feeling it had more to do with the fact my team never wanted to gorge to cap anything!

Yeah. They got back to the whole '1.04-without-defense-chamber-first-equals-instant-lose' thing, only this time it's with sensories.
