The evil "perfection" syndrome

Perfect games have disadvantages
Of course we all want the perfect game and thats why we wait for the release, but perfect games are evil. Very evil.

Updates are always good, people like them. We always start screaming like schoolgirls when a game is patched or updated with new content. Perfect games are so damn perfect that you can`t update them and like it or not, but people will get eventually bored.

Maybe the developers will release few things after the release, but everything looks so perfect already that we don`t need anything.

Cheers

I dunno about you, but I don't feel like downloading 101 patches just so I can get a decent game without crashes and placeholders. But don't listen to me, I'm evil.

I think I might have to disagree with you here... Lets take existence for example..

Beta 1 of existence was not perfect. Once a team gained a small advantage, that team could control the map untill the map changed. There were many bugs, everywhere, and the weapons were overpowered. People downloaded Beta 1 and saw this - then stoped playing. When updates came people were already done with the mod - they didnt wanna go back. First impressions are ever so important. I dont really know where you are coming from with this. If a game is 'peferct', as you say, then more people will play it.

its not goin to be perfect for their first release.... they are planning to add a lot of stuff....... like the bob interface when climbing walls, some stuff with the commander mode....... tunning the models/maps adding mayb more models for marines........ etc... when they release beta 1 they will have plenty of things to add to the next version......

What Steve said. If *nothing* else, the team can't release until all the artwork is in... A game could have the best gameplay on the planet... but if all of the models are made up of bouncing, colored cubes, you're not going to think much of it.

Similarly, a game can't be released if the gameplay isn't balanced. The most beautiful game in the world will be played by exactly *nobody* if it's horribly unbalanced, if one team always wins, etc.

And finally, if the game simply fails to run right - random crashes, hangs, freezes, etc., or poorly planned maps, bugs that get you stuck in world geometry... all these things will frustrate people and make them stop playing.

Where does this leave us? A game needs to be visually complete, balanced between opposing teams, and stable with no gameplay-upsetting bugs. That's what the team is trying to do, and when all three of those conditions are met, NS will be released.

I think Flayra's got enough ideas up his sleeve for the future of NS that we can expect at least some patches to NS, even if the first version could be played as a complete game. Besides, bugs and imbalances pop up no matter how thoroughly you playtest.

There is more than enough stuff to put into Version 2.

That's why it keeps getting talked about. You don't think that people would say "Good Version 2 Idea" without planning on having a Version 2, do you?

I think console games have to be as close to perfect as possible when thet are released. You cant patch a console game, even on the more recent systems. It either has to be right the first release, or its going to bomb. PC devs can slack off a little cause they can release patches, and I think that is sloppy work (not trying to offend any PC devs that are reading this.)

From what I understand there will be marine vs. marine and alien vs. alien gameplay modes later on, as well as new maps. These things will change game play completely… NS won't get boring any time soon. So assuming these things make their way into NS later on we’ll have 3 very replayable game modes.

thinking, have thought, been suggested 2.5 metric tons of them, and have said long ago, not in this release

the obvious solution to this would be ever major patch (example 1.0 to 2.0) would be to ahve sumthing that might chagne gameplay a little, a new weapon, skill, creature possibly (unlikely). and in ever middle patch (1.0 to 1.1) some small fixes and a new map

Then again, most consoles don't run Windows.

    Most.

And the ones that do aren't worth playing.

I would hope that if there was a fairly major balance problem, bug, ect. they would push it right out a la version 1.1 (which I'm sure they would). Then work on the main features they've been putting off in version 2.0 ... but lets just worry about 1.0 for now

There are no perfect releases. Games are getting so incredibly complex that it is impossible to catch all technical bugs for the myriads of different systems.

Also, since playtesters aren't wicked enough, there are always cheap exploits which are only caught by letting the public in, because only there you find players who will try to "break" the game instead of playing it as intended.

I bet that a mod with so many new features as NS will need a bugfix patch very quickly.

That's what playtests are for, my friend.

Playtesters need to deliberately act like llamas from time to time to catch exploits, or they won't find them.
