Missing Bitmap Font?

JaguarJaguar Join Date: 2003-01-05 Member: 11859Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Need some help</div> Okay, so right now I have two old old old Pentium 2's, one with a graphic card that's no longer supported by the company (Damn you S3!), but it turns out the other one has an ATI card, and I got some new drivers for it that support OpenGL. Except every time I try and join a game with my openGL on I get this message:

Missing Bitmap Font: gfx\vgui\font\640_OverwatchScheme.tga

And then the game doesn't connect. What can I do about this?

Sigh. Not sure how many times we've said this already... that is a benign error that does not affect anything, and has nothing to do with your connection problems. Please folks - use the search button before reporting issues that we have answered many, many times.

Please post your system specs as specified in this forums FAQ. Until we have those, we cannot help you. Also, we need more information about your symptoms that 'cannot connect'. There should be specific error messages in the console.

    Help us to help you.

    1) System Specs:

    Windows 98
    Pentium II
    128MB RAM
ATI 3d Rage Pro with updated Drivers specifically for OGL support

    2) TFC works fine with my current OGL settings, yet when I try to connect to a NS server, I get normal console, the WON stuff, and the MOTD, and then I get the Missing Bitmap Error, and then it just stops. And sits there, and sits there, and sits there. Eventually, you can type things in at the console prompt, and I just type QUIT to get back out. So for me, this issue doesn't seem to be benign at all.

    3) I dled the NS2 installer first from Edgefiles, and then from FilePlanet, and neither one has the Overwatch files. Also, I'm using the All-Seeing Eye as a server search, and letting it do the connect stuff, just in case that may be associated with this.

So, in short, I realize that other people are having this problem, and it's not actually doing anything to their game. However, I get this and then it just stops, so that's why I'm asking.

The reason you get the overwatch targa file error is only because you run at 640x480 - that's the only reason. It has no relationship to your connection problems. If you ran at 320x200 or 800x600, you would not get them, and you would still not be able to connect. I would however love to be proven wrong if it started you working, so try setting your res to 800x600 (even though it would be low FPS for that card) and attempt to connect.

As for the why... hmmm... can you start a LAN server? Does it let you play? Also, can you tell us a bit more about your internet connection?

Well, you were absolutely right about the Bitmap thing. Tried it at 800x600 and it still didn't connect. However, I went back to software mode just to make sure I wasn't crazy, and I used to be able to run NS on this computer, and managed to connect to a server. Then I switched back to OGL, and tried to connect to the exact same server, and it just sat in the console again.

My internet connection is a Time Warner Cable Modem. Again, works fine for TFC and NS in software mode.

Oh, the whole reason I got stuck on the Bitmap thing: Before updating my drivers, I tried switching to D3d, and managed to get connected to a game through that (lookd like crap though). Then I tried it in the 640 and got the Overwatch thing and it didn't connect. Can't remember whether that was before or after I updated the drivers though.

That's all the fiddling I can do for the night. I'm off to a friend's house to play NS on his nice and shiny p3 all night long.

Ok, all of the info in this thread is sorta really disjoined, so could you try and give us exactly these things:

    1) Can you play NS? If so under exactly what conditions? (D3D, Software, Resolutions etc)
    2) How do you connect to servers? (If you have only bveen ussing an external browser switch to internal and visa versa)
    3) Can you start a LAN game in the modes that don't let you join games?

Resurrecting my month and a half old topic! Fun!!

So, yeah, I got the NS bug again, and I'm still stuck with my crappy computers.

    Here's the skinny:

I can connect via internal browser and ASE via Software mode.

Using OGL/D3D, when I'm using ASE it just stops doing anything at the console screen (as stated above). Using the Internal browser, it eventually gives me, "Cannot complete connection attempt".

All of these are in 640x480, and trying to connect to the same server.

I can create a LAN game in all modes.

Any suggestions or more info you guys need?
