The Shame! The Injustice! The Awful Lerk Control!

Why weren't they improved, Flayra? Why?!
NS2.0 ROCKS! (Seriously, it does!)

Except for the Lerk. Specifically, the Lerk's 'wings'.
This picture --> is highly misleading. The Lerk, my friends, cannot fly.

It STILL smacks into walls, it STILL can't adequately manuver in the air, it STILL can't even manage to rise up to and enter a vent, it STILL 'glides' like a rock, and it STILL... can't... FLY!

(I had about a page worth of things I wanted to say written up before M$ Internet Exploder ate it all, so this will be short.)

Please, Flayra. Just a simple answer. Is the Lerk ever going to actually be able to *fly*, rather than just hop in mid-air and fall slowly?

Is this something that will soon be added, something that's on the back burner, or something you simply aren't going to do because you can't or don't want to?

Just a concise, simple answer. Please.

Sorry to break it too you, but the Lerk is about as realistic as it gets. Birds keep themselves in the air by flapping. Flapping uses energy. So what is wrong with the Lerk?

BTW, how can't you fly it into vents? It's EXTREMELY easy to do.

Birds don't fly using the 'Asteroids' method of control, for one. :b

The updated lerk flight model was one of the things that had to be left to wait if the v2.0 release date was going to be met, with how many other changes needed to be balanced, tested, and shaken. It isn't cut, but it doesn't have a date for inclusion either.. so it's back into limbo.

    Please tell me you're joking.

    1) Birds flap while flying to maintain a constant speed. Flapping is not, itself, what keeps them in the air. Bernoullian lift is.

    2) Lift is generated by the air that is moving over their wing. When they flap to push air backwards (and themselves forwards), and then lock their wings and glide, the air moving over their wings is what keeps them in the air.

    3) When birds glide, they cannot glide one direction and then point any direction they feel like while doing so. They can, however, steer around, climb, dive, bank, and generally manuver while gliding. For some reason, the Lerk can out-turn a merry-go-round while gliding in direction x (and only x). But it can't control which direction it glides. Yes, I believe I heard someone in the back say 'backwards'...

    4) The lift efficiency of the Lerk's wings (how well they can glide) right now is horrible. And not even depicted very realistically. No creature actually capable of flying has wings that are as close to non-functional as the Lerk's currently are. If its wings were that inefficient, it would stall and start dropping after it slowed past a certain point, rather than simply decending at a constant, slow pace to the ground.

    5) I can fly into vents. After I overshoot, fall past, overshoot, fall past, get shot, respawn, gestate, flop to the spot again, and finally get into the vent. The real trick is getting their twice before the map changes.

I have to say RavenFire is 100% correct. Each game I have new hope for the lerk. I tell myself, "This game will be different. The lerk will not fail me." But inevidably, every game, after a string of miserable failures involving smacking into walls instead of vents, overshooting perches, and flopping wildly inside a group of marines (and without my beloved chomp), I realize my lerk has failed me again. No amount of cool abilities (poison, umbra) will negate the lerk's horrible attempts at flying. The lerk is suppose to be a support unit. But let's face it. He can't even take care of himself.

I haven't used lerk (In fact, I solely play Skulk) but so far can sort of agree with what was said.

The lerk doesn't look to be good at flying anyway to me. There are just too many problems with its shape and wings that it wouldn't fly well.

flap once or twice, hold the jump key. whee, glide.....I'm happy *yawn*

while the initial jump sends you pretty much straight up (even when moving forwards), I was still able to rambo through the map and kill about 6 rines before I died.

the initial jump is bad, i miss the 1.04 flight style.

first jump is too vertical imo.

I think it is better than 1.04. You have to remember to hold the jump button when you want to adjust your direction (holding it is glide).

    Yes initial jump is bad

But other than that I still could handle it the same way I did in 1.04....maybe its because of the FOV??Or is it I adapt to quickly?

The only thing I will miss is the long-lasting Umbra that was in 1.04,but all the better anyway, spores adn spikes

    it's a bit better

It has definitely changed; I saw some ptesters on 1.04 in its final days who could not fly lerk at all anymore.

I did learn 1.04 lerk flying tho, it's not that hard, and obviously the ptesters once could

If we can't get better lerk control, maybe we should just convince the mapmakers to add a funnel entrance to every vent?
