<div class="IPBDescription">hmmm</div> Not entirely sure where this belongs, so ill put it here (its not very long anyway)

I'd just like to point out the irony that fun maps produce.

The majority of these "fun" maps, are not even in the slightest bit amusing, let alone fun.. many are pointless and most literarly hurt your eyes to look at.

Was this a joke initially by someone who couldnt be arsed making a proper map, and though, i know ill make an easy to make map, and call it fun?

OR

Am i completely wrong and these maps are the future of NS (god let it not be true) <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

There is one, im not sure of the name, but its a siege map, with a great distance between the marine start and the hives (the walking way i mean) (just outside the marine start is a huge 3 tiered room, with a vent that takes you about midway between the marine adn alien starts, if that helps) But that was about the only one i had the slightest fun on :/

*edit - no disrespect to the mappers who followed this craze intended - edit*

I'd like to see aim-maps for ns

yeah, they're all rather stupid and stacked at times...

especially "ninjafall" don't play marines on that map if you want to win, although I found it fun at times... like actually managing to fend of the two onos that dropped onto us...

but yes, most of the time, they're a waste of time. But, I've only seen two servers running any of them most of the time, so It's no big deal... people will always want to play a game how it's not meant, just look at fy_Iceworld from CS, there're weapons scattered all over it, the only, ONLY point at all is to deathmatch in an area that is basically nothing but hallway...

In truth, I've had the odd laugh from Missilecommand... It can be funny, at times. That said, I've never really enjoyed it with larger groups, or competitive people... The point of fun maps (at least the ones that are actually somewhat fun) is to have fun, not to actually try to win.

That said, yes, most are horrible, painful, and should be sent to binary h e double toothpicks.

I call it fun. What!? You guys are too serious! Loosen up and enjoy that pile of guns I left for you.

I always liked fun maps, but they are not the future. They are, IMHO, a stopgap measure for people like me who are sick of instant relocations to Cargo and Processing. Accordingly, we should be seeing a decrease in fun maps when 2.0 is released. I rarely have fun on either side of a marine insta-relocate, but I always have fun on nomblizkikko.

    (Yes, I know I'm a n00b and therefore my opinion doesn't count, but I had to start posting here eventually <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> )

Beat up the n00b! Seriously, though, I agree almost entirely. I think most people do. Fun maps will never go away because, sometimes, no matter what, it's fun to mess around. Just like you have people who make human towers in the ready room every once in a while, you're going to have fun maps that get played occasionally. It's all in good "fun"!

    Just, hopefully not <i>as much</i>.

I always enjoyed the long fall in that map =) . Gives me the feel of actually falling, butterflies in stomach etc. As the yankees would say, sheer fun! And when marines shot off from the below with their jetpacks, straight into my web and continuing to go up until eventually...squish! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> So yes, I think funmaps are relaxing and fun after commanding 5 times in a row or getting hmg/jp:ed continuously for example.

haha, wow another thread for bashing fun maps! YAH! <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    (Not to start a fight)
Fun maps are what keep people playing mods untill new official levels, patches, units or any other NEW thing comes out.

I think fun maps are what keep the general player into a game. Sure you will always have 400 or so people playing NS at any given time, but most people just jump on for an hour or so to have some simple wall climbing, onos stomping fun.

I think the only reason fun maps get bashed in every HL mod is becuase 90% of the people in the forums are the die-hard players who dream of killing 8 marines as a skulk with out getting seen!

Im not saying thats bad... but i, and most relaxed player don't mind seeing our team get run over by 15 oni on NS_wheel, or 20 JPing rines fly into the hive room on seige 5 minutes after the door opens... its just for fun bros...

Fun maps are just like that midnight candy bar to hold you over till morning comes! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

If you mean CUSTOM maps go to <a href='http://www.yoclan.com/downloads/nsmaps/ns_europa.zip' target='_blank'>here</a> and it will download (NS_EUROPA). Extract all files to Halflife\Ns or whatever else your natural selection was.

Custom maps are good because playing regular maps gets really old, really fast. It's the same marine overpowered tactics that make it dull, and with custom makes you skip all the bs and just get to fighting. And non decorated empty looking maps are better imo, all of the regular maps are loaded with useless ledges and railings and stupid crap that seems like they're only there to get my fade stuck when I try and blink.

The point of fast-paced and reflex-requiring maps like fy_iceworld, fy_pool_day, fy_pool_day2, fy_dahizhousez in Counter-Strike is merely fun and training. The basic maps give you sneaking and camping, and so on. Fast based fy_levels where guns are at the ground (I see you have not played that many custom maps with the title fy_ havent you) are totally awesome for training. Where everything is based on your own reflexes and skill, you really get better playing those maps. Having weapons on the ground

    1) Removes weapon-whoring a little bit. AWP is a nice weapon, but its not fun when everyone on the team has it.

    2) Makes the "buying" process faster. If that map would have buying where you start, you would get nutting but grenade spam.

These kinda maps also allow you to do so awesome rushes. Take mp5, run to the other side fast, and you can get from 3-5 kills if you come unnoticed. All is to deathmatch in an area that is basically nothing but hallway ... ??

    --------------
    |********|
    |*||||*||||*|
    |********|
    |*||||*||||*|
    |********|
    ---------------

That is basicly the map. Basicly, the map allows many tactics to be used. Camp, which is nearly never that usefull. Or you can try to catch the enemies coming to your side by taking them out from a distance from one of the corridors. Or my favorite, the rush. But yeah, it is just deathmatch. But very efficient training and tons of FUN. I don't think the fy_iceworld one is a good version, because there are many maps improving the original like heck.

Like fy_pool_day2k, which is bigger and has a lot more cool tactical places in it. Or fy_snow, which makes snipers a lot more efficient by making the map a bit bigger and more sniper friendly. You shouldn't make so hasty judges you know.

Also, you judged every custom map. Some of the maps that have been later added to mods are actually custom maps for previous versions of the game. Mods themselves are custom games for a certain game. The point of Half-Life is it's deep customization. No-one has to play the same old dust over and over again. No one has to look at that horrible looking default ns pistol over and over again.

Just face it, customization will always remain there, because if it would not, it would take away one third of what people love so much in HL.

Personally, I think we're going to see less of the fun maps in 2.0.

The reason <i>I</i> liked maps like siege005/006 is that they are the only maps where you can pretty much guarantee aliens will get onos. And we all like being onos, don't we? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

But with 1 hive oni in 2.0, we won't have that problem.

    Fun maps are great!
siege_006 is a masterpiece, pillbox is very funny and nomblizkikko is both fun and good looking

Maps like <b>Commandmissile</b> or <b>Siege006</b> are alot of fun and can be played for hours on end.

Maps like <i>Mariofunworld</i> or <i>Missilecommand</i> are not only 1 sided but are also not alot of fun to play more than once.

I have played some really good fun maps and they add to the game alot. Once you get bored of playing the official maps 30 times over, playing a fun map will keep you playing the game and you wont leave NS to go play something else.

NS is becomming one of the most popular and well known games for HL ever.

When people ask what are the best HL mods its always like this.

    CS
    DoD
    NS
    TS
    ESF
    Sven co-op

My list would be like this

    NS
    TS
    ESF
    DoD
    Sven co-op
    .
    .
    .

I'm not a big fan of the "fun" maps since they pretty much remove the sneaky fun of skulking, the gorging, and marines just tech up as fast as they can.

Hell ya - You know why i love misslecommand_final 3 ? Because when i am a gorge up there, i actually feel vertigo, and i'm like "whoa" whenever i have to stand on the corner of the map to build an rt.

Sorry for a bit dumb questiong, but what is ESF ? (Now fans of that game whatever it is are going to shout the living souls out of me, but whatever).

I am rather amused that you don't such games as FireArms in your list at all. Also, TS after NS? A reworked HL Deathmatch after a hugely teambased stragetic game. You sure like variety don't you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Most of the people I know who play CS 24/7 has never even heard of things such as "mods". I believe many people who play many mods would give CS the rank nr 2 or so. TFC would deserve a place at your list IMHO <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well you can always stick to the non-crazy custom maps....not all of them are like seige005, nombitzkikko, missle command, ninjafall, etc.

Just look at ns_lost! It's now an official map becuase people like it so much. ns_train, ns_cydonia_beta3, ns_hall, ns_europa, ns_atomicmass, ns_vint004, ns_hydrocity, ns_legionxiii, the list goes on.

Personally if I had to choose one of those "fun" maps, I'd choose ns_pillbox_final becuase that map is great fun, and not as uneven as maps such as seige00X...
  • SlothropXSlothropX Join Date: 2003-07-21 Member: 18315Members, Constellation
Has the NS team ever considered making an official map pack? Very few servers seem to run the unofficial maps, which is sort of a problem since low map number is one of the larger problems of this mod. An OMP would promote map diversity without leading to patch bloat.
  • severijnseverijn Join Date: 2002-12-18 Member: 11049Members
    No TFC in the list?

Anyway, I think the "fun" maps are totally useless in ns because there is only one, maybe two viable strategies. Upon this, they are ugly, too. And almost every "fun" map is unbalanced. ex. ns_eye...

You're missing the point. Fun maps are for when you don't give a ****. Doesn't matter who wins, or strategic diversity, it's just 15 minutes of something weird (like falling off the ledges as a gorge on missilecommand, or having a skulk land on your head in a missilecommand 2v2). That said, it's hard to understand how people play them over and over...

I think unofficial maps help this mod alot. With only a half dosen or so official maps, a large amount of custom maps are needed to keep it different every game.
  • ZekZek Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 7962Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
I like a fun map once in a while, but there's nothing fun about one side getting slaughtered almost every time just because of how poorly planned out the maps are. If someone releases versions of siege or missilecommand that are actually well balanced then I'd definitely play them more often.
  • KrepperKrepper Join Date: 2003-07-30 Member: 18580Members
Yeah it's simple. I don't even know why this thread exists. Fun maps are around for that one or two hour break you have inbetween playing for 13 hours straight. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Who needs balanced teams? Part of the fun is overcomming the odds. Not like these maps are used for clan matches. When you win as the team that is unfavored to win it's like getting a knife kill, pure pwnage. And when you're on the team that is favored to win try not to use the "best" strategy but have some fun and do something creative. (i.e. not doing HMG/JP rush on NS_siege00X, and not turret farming <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::sentry::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/turret.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='turret.gif'><!--endemo--> )

Some of my favorite custom maps:
ns_siege909 (map intended for rines to win, but aliens seem to get the better for the most part)
ns_nomblitzkikko4 (pretty fun, aliens got catapults)
ns_mole(dunno if that's it's name, but this one requires teamwork for rines, and LOTS of welders)
ns_siege006* (pretty fun siege map, gives rines a bunch on the upper hand)
ns_simulated* (a cool map with a wall in between, you gotta build up before it breaks down)
ns_missilecommand (this one's pretty cool, only way to reach aliens is with JPs, they're right above you)
ns_marsoutpost (this one's a nice basic map, not much different from the default maps, but it's small)
ns_2base (for you hardcore TFC fans out there)
ns_castlewars (LOTS of res, and looks pretty basic, but it's got a helluva lot of fun, rines' type of map)

    all I know so far, so keep those <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> smashing those <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> or get those <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> eating those <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> in the maps I suggested
