Training Manual?

<div class="IPBDescription">Faq's don't cover enough</div> The FAQs are real cute snappy answers, more like brochures than training aids. And since there is no manual or readme, we are faced with asking questions and getting "nub" for a response. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I was playing recently, and somehow got some mines. They don't show up as weapons like in HL,
so I asked how to use them. Someone yelled at me just drop them so someone else can use them.
This does not help a newbie, just makes him feel useless.

For some reason I am the only one without voice ability in the game (but any 6-yr old can spew silliness, ruining the game). Is there info I can read on this setup?
I looked all over, but can't find mention of what keys are bound to what.
I tried using the multiplayer config screen to set some but they don't work.

The NS Manual can be found <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/manual/index.html' target='_blank'>here.</a> but experiance is the best, so just keep playing.

The mines ARE used as every other weapon, select it and press fire, you will drop the mine or place it on a wall.

    Thanks. I've read it.
That is more of a spec sheet and history lesson than a manual.

I can see all the weapons, but how are they used? I only have LMG, Pistol, and Knife on my HUD. (1,2,3)
Do mines only show up when commander drops them on you? I've run over plenty on the floor, and hear a beep, but nothing happens.
In TFC, standard hotkeys work great. I haven't seen any mention in NS yet I hear them being used.

My experience so far has been lame commanders babbling nonsense, and teams yelling weldme weldme. HOW?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> Yet noone can take the time to answer questions.

BTW, I the last 10 games, we ABSOLUTELY HAD to have more marines than aliens. We sucked and lost every time.

look for newbie guide, or n00b guide. pretty much any question you ahve, you put GUIDE or FAQ after it in the search function, and you'll find it.

welding ppl = get a welder dropped on you, select it, and press fire

picking up mines= if the mines are laying SIDEWAYS, thatmeans you can pick them up, and place them by FIRING. if you are facing a wall, they will become a trip mine, looking at the ground, will become a proximity mine. some ppl like the mines on the doors, some like them on ground around the equipment. if you have a welder in your 'pistol' slot, you'll have to drop it to pick up mines.

it actually shouldn't be called the "pistol" slot or "LMG" slot, it should more be called primary slot and secondary slot, cuz u can use other things. but it doesn't really matter, just call it wtvr ur more familiar with.

When you walk over mines, and it beeps, its cuz the mine has already be used and placed. you can't pick those up.

When you pick up a welder or minepack, it replaces your pistol in the secondary slot.

I wouldn't sweat it if someone complains about your mine placement. If they or the comm doesn't like where you placed them then they shouldn't have given the mines to you. Or at least told you where to place them.
To be honest, they may pitch a fit over mine placement for a minute, but 30 seconds later they will be too busy getting chomped on by a skulk to remember.

If you are really worried about mine placement just watch where some veteran players put them.

I'm not a new player and I like to imagine that I have just a bit of skill at NS. But every now and then you will find a player that knows the exact way you should play and any deviation from that method will result in failure. They exist, they will scream at you, but you should just ignore them.
They only manage to embarass themselves.

1: The manual does suck, sorry.
2: Marines have three weapons slots, a la Counterstrike. Slot one is your big gun, slot two is your pistol class weapon, slot three is your knife. You start with an LMG in slot one, and a pistol in slot two. You cannot replace or drop your knife.

You auto-pickup any weapon other than your default pistol and LMG. They replace whatever's already in that slot, which drops to the floor. You still have to switch to that weapon to use it. Here's a list of what weapons go in what slots:

    Shotgun - slot 1
HMG (Heavy Machine Gun) - slot 1
GL (grenade launcher) - slot 1
    Welder - slot 2
    Mines - slot 2.

3: If you place mines on the walls, they emit a laser beam which detonates the mine when broken by enemies. If you place a mine on the floor, they do not emit a beam and only explode on contact. This is the preferred method of using mines - putting them on the floor around important structures helps prevent them from being destroyed, and scattering them all over the floor makes it very very hard for skulks to move. This is why people will get annoyed at you if you start putting them across the entrances to where you're defending; this is *generally* not the most effective way of setting mines.
4: Fades' acid rocket can detonate mines. In this case, the mines behave as if the Fade placed them; ie they will damage any marines and marine structures in the blast radius. In all other cases, mines only damage aliens (or the marine they belong to, if he's close enough. Like how you can be hurt by your own rockets in TFC but your teammates can't.)
5: It's a good idea to try not to pick up anything other than medpacks while you're new, until you get a feel for the game and see how stuff's used. Trust me on this <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thanks for the info! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now, if someone could write a Commander for Dummies text, it would help a lot.
I've been in some games now where I would have LOVED to replace the person, but don't know
    what to do either. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

I started my own game, but you can't drop structures alone.
I'd like to practice before hindering a real game (although it can't be worse than some people)

Enabling cheats (by typing <b><span style='font-family:Courier'>sv_cheats 1</span></b> in console) will allow you to drop structures.
