Actually, wouldn't VU publisher also be the ones to control this. For example, I'm in the music industry, and eventhough I want my cd out and planned it to be out on a specific date; sometimes, the publisher can't meet that deadline because of issues, problems, etc, thus they cause the my cd to be delayed--they know my cd is going to be delayed before I do.

Could it be someone else who answered Gabes email said "I hope not"?--fixed

I truly hope it's not true.

Gabe never said that.

Guys, there are two possibilities. Either it's false and all those news sites screwed up, or Vivendi actually did delay the game and they spilled the news to those sites before they told Valve(yes, it's very possible).

It is fact, though, that Vivendi is saying the game is delayed. The only thing we have to dispute that is the word of one Valve employee(Gabe) who simply says it's the first he's heard about it. IGN's story pretty effectively sums up the situation.

But wouldn't you expect Gabe to know for certain?
• ZekZek Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 7962Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
No, not necessarily. As I said, it's completely possible that Valve wouldn't be the first to know.

Not word for word, but yes, the email was to Gabe, and someone by the name Nathan Willis did say that. He said I hope they are not true--what the websites are saying about the delay.

"would release on September 20th 2003 and exactly September 20th, VU Games spokespeople today said over the phone that the title would in fact not ship to retail until "Holiday 2003," which doesn't say a whole hell of a lot other than, "Not September 20th."-- http://pc.ign.com/articles/431/431079p1.html

--I thought it was the Sept 30th.

Vivendi does not set Valve's release dates. Valve OWNS the project. They didn't fund it with outside cash. Vivendi prints up the boxes and distributes things to stores: they don't call the shots. Valve sends them release candidates when its ready to send them.

That's what I've been saying, Valve has ALWAYS followed their own plans, they even might have special contracts they sign that gives them full control of the product. Just look at the lack of marketing HL1 and CS had, most "publishers" will try to pressure a company to spend a bunch of money so they can pump out a ton of comercials guarantee some kind of sales. Valve has never been about marketing or cashing in on their games, so I wouldn't be suprised if they released it in September and bit their thumb at Christmas.

Although I distinctly remember someone at Valve saying they were planning a CS2 release for Christmas.

How do ya figure?

You think there going to give up what the source engine represents compared to the battlefield engine because the game itself was delayed for maybe a week?

Just cause the game was delayed doesnt mean the SDK pre-release will be.

I love people who try to take valve down a notch whenever they can, because they cant face the fact that its going to pwn the entire internet.

I love you guys. :P

The thing right now is this: BOTH news items are unconfirmed rumors, both of a delay and the denial of a delay. Nobody has said anything official, but I bet we will hear an official word one way or the other by the end of tommorrow's business day.

Personally, I think Valve is in a position to not have to wait on Vivindi. They've already shown that they're willing and able to go with other publishers (Activision for CS:CZ), my bet is if Vivindi tried to delay HL2 and Valve simply wasn't ready, they'd switch publishers. Then poor Blizzard would really be screwed...

Besides, there's the whole Steam thing. I don't want to purchase HL2 over Steam, but if its the difference between waiting 3 months for the game, you can bet I'll do it...

It's highly unlikely that Vivendi would sign a contract which allows Valve to bypass them in this fashion. An early Steam release would be devastating for the sales.
• AposApos Join Date: 2003-06-14 Member: 17369Members, Constellation
Vivendi has a) no power and b) no reason to delay the game. The only reason for a delay would be if Valve felt they needed more time, and in that case, we'd hear it straight from them.

I'm good either way. Since I simply cannot avoid playing it right when it comes out (or else miss out on the worldwide release) more time means a better system to experience it on for the first time...

Why does everyone care? It's going to be openly playable to like 10% of the gaming population, and I highly doubt (going from previous sequel attempts) it's going to be particularily revolutionary, or [PRboyee]change the way you look at First Person Action Massive Multipleyer Buzzword Online Shooters[/PRBoyee]

It'll come out when it does. It may be good, it may not.
