You could also put sparks coming out of it.
Here's a couple references in TFC to see what I mean.

i didn't feel like doing calc so i made this: it needs animations and a mesh. (and skin but i think i can hook something up)

e/ the tubes on the side look odd and i think i'll scrap them but im just showing what i started off with before i go for some Zzzzzs.

Good lord. As much as I find someone going to the effort of learning about the specifics of HL modelling, those sparks on the TFC model are atrociously done. Some subtlety would be nice.

You could use an effect similar to the ns_eclipse electricity to do sparks running between the prongs, if you had the transparency .dlls. The skeleton would be a touch on the complicated side, but it'd be more tedious than difficult.

I'm also working on a shockstick weapon using the picture posted in the original post. The skin isn't quite finished yet, and I'm still working on a new "flourish" animation. But I do have custom sounds to go with it.

I dont know why you people need to see electriy running around the damn thing. When you look at a electric fence, you dont see big lightning bolts flying off it do you? Maybe an effect when you hit something, but not for idle.
