Godly powers: Jim Carrey's latest character has offended the Malaysian government.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Reuters) -- A Malaysian government minister has called on Islamic authorities to ban Hollywood actor Jim Carrey's latest film "Bruce Almighty," newspapers reported on Tuesday.
In the comedy, Carrey plays the role of a television reporter who is given the power of God for a week.
"It's not appropriate to show the film in this country," Abdul Hamid Zainal, a minister in the Prime Minister's Department, was quoted as saying.
The minister said censors should refer the film to the Islamic Affairs Department to decide whether it should be screened. Just over half of Malaysia's 24 million people are Muslim.
"We cannot equate ourselves with God -- even as a joke," Abdul Hamid said.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I <i><b>seriously </b></i>doubt that Egypt would ban a movie because of Judaism, of all things. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Actualy though, its not a bad decision on their governments part, remeber what happend when some reporter made some comment about Mohammed?(spelled wrong I think) People rioted, burned buildings IN THIER OWN COUNTRY, I think around 200 people were killed in the riots. And the comment wasnt even something intended to be offensive.
Malaysia is much bigger then whatever country that happend in and so any resulting riots would be more destructive.

And this would be enforced by? Death? Torture? You'd have to kill me before you could make me renounce my faith. And i'd take some of you with me by God.

I'd enforce it by physical castration, and then maybe some further death and torture just for grins and giggles.
EDIT: I know religion does ruin a lot of things, but you have to see it from their point of view...The majority are muslim and I suppose most of them probably agree with wha the minister is saying...
Hell, if it wasn't for religion or one's belief in a universal and powerful God, which shouldn't be considered religion, our world would have lost a lot of its morals and ethical beliefs. It would be chaos reborn I think.

Ohhh, I was looking at it the other way, that The Matrix was offensive to Jewish people so Egypt banned it. That's why I thought it so funny. This way it makes much more sense.
Oops.
Amazing, a simple thought out intelligent post in an internet religion debate! Simply amazing. I'm off to notify CNN...
2) Religion is not what makes religion stupid. Mindless fundamentalism is what makes a religious organization stupid.
To be a bit more harsh, religion is what makes faith stupid. I have no problem with people who want to believe in God, Allah, Shiva, Some-Beastly-Thing-That-Looks-Like-Shrubbery, or the tiny elf spirits who dwell in donut land (the ones that poke the holes in the said comestibles). What irks me however is when that faith is used by an individual or a group of individuals to dominate others. That's when it gets downright nasty and objectionable. I don't mind people coming together to share and promote their faith, but I do feel strongly against religious organizations taking part in politics.
When it comes to censorship, religion should never be grounds for censoring a work of art. If it offends someone, that individual can make the choice not to go and see the offending item. Those who are not offended, should be able to enjoy it. Censorship is sometimes understandable (for example, no way in hell can you tell me that child pornography is art and therefore ok), but it should always be applied with reason and never backed with arguments that are based on "what God wants".

And about that Matrix Reloaded ban sort of thing: I think that the main problem was that the humans call their safe haven Zion. However, the egyptians were totally on the wrong track there, since I think that Zion does not refer to judaism, but to the rastafari faith instead. IIRC, the rastafarian equivalent of heaven is called Zion, and their hell is known as Babylon.
its not a random occurance that so many people world wide choose to believe whatever religion (its not just monkey see monkey do either).
yeah religion can suck, mostly when certain individuals decide to use it as a tool of manipulation, but lets not just randomly bash peoples view of the world, there is no right or wrong way to see the world! its just whatever gets you through the years...
(and might I add that the basics of MOST religions are built around treating people with respect, despite what the hard-core elements might try to say)

I am sick and tired of this. HOW COME EVERY TIME SOMONE SAYS SOMETHING BAD ABOUT RELIGION THEN 10 PEOPLE FLOCK ON OVER AND GO "HAHA YEP RELIGION IS STUPID", WHEN ABOUT 99% OF THE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD BELIEVE IN IT? WHAT IF WE WERE ALL TO MAKE FUN OF YOU AND SAY "OMG U GUYS ARE SO STUPID FOR SAYING RELIGION IS DUMB?" WELL I BET YOU WOULD FEEL PRETTY STUPID, BUT WE DONT DO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE A RELIGION. EVEN DEVIL WORSHIP IS A RELIGION. YOU GUYS ARE MORONS. I DO NOT CARE IF THIS POST GETS DELETED/ME SUSPENDED/BANNED. I LOVE THESE FORUMS BUT FOR THE LOVE OF ANYTHING LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111111111112123@1!
EVERYOEN WHO HAS A RELIGION IS NOT SOME LITTLE WIMP. TRY TO ENFORCE SOMETHING ON ME BY PHYSICAL MEANS AND LAUGH IN MY FACE. I SWEAR TO MY GOD THAT YOU WILL NOT LEAVE ALIVE EVEN IF IT IS A SIN.
lol i think that would be a good course of action at this point

What he said.
I only hope theres a particularly warm part of hell reserved for those who use faith as a means of oppression.
