Seriously, help the newbies
Alright, first of all, im not a newbie at these forums. Secondly, i'm going to help out newbies here. Alright first of wall, i want newbies to post replies of what you need help with IN the game. I cannot help out with scripts, or installation, or technical problems. Just post something in my topic about something you need help with in the game.
Alright here's a small newbie lesson:
First, KEEP YOUR HINTS ON (or auto-help or whatever they call it)
How i came from newbie to expert, was i used the hints to help me out. The hints tell ya about everything you point at, structures, players, wutever, jsut keep it on until you dont need it anymore.
Secondly, Marines should be the top choice of newbies, since no one knows about aliens yet.
Choose aliens as soonm as you get used to marines.
Commanding should be your 3rd choice after getting used to the 2 races.
Than gorge might be 4th.
OKay, now post the stuff you need hlep with, and happy hunting!

Although 'low skill' these tasks are normally essential if your team is to win.
I would also add play 10 wins on each side before you go Commander or Gorge. Then only go Gorge or Commander if your team agrees and try Gorge first as it's easier than commander.
...and when 2.0 gets here we shall all be newbies again as all the rules except for TEAMWORK are going to change.
...
[why do you say you're not a newbie at these forums if your post count's 1?...]
That being said, I've unfortunately also found that saying "Where's that?" will usually get a quick "nub" response followed by being ignored for the rest of the game.
Also, it's awful hard to get on the marine team when there's already six or seven marines hopping all over themselves to try and get in. On the bright side, my skulk skills are picking up. I usually try and hang close to the gorge so he can drain me when he needs to.
If you start with 'low skill' tasks such as welding duty, Gorge Guarding and occasionally try other stuff too, then you eventually get the feel of the maps as well as seeing how everything goes together. You should also make sure your never alone unless your on phase gate patrol.
The one thing you wont know in the beggining of the game is map layout and place names. You can't know that until you've played a few times on each map - maybe many times. To start with just concetrate on knowing were you are, where you were and how you get back there.
Remember just when you think you've seen it all this happens:-

It's not an image its a demo - save it to your ns folder and run ns - then drop the console and type 'playdemo gorgerush.dem'
As far as newbie advice goes, the best I can give is this. No matter what anyone else is whining about, if you're a marine, LISTEN TO YOUR COMMANDER. He has the overview, he probably has some idea what he wants to happen. It was the one thing I learned before playing myself, and it really helps you learn the maps and the play style. In addition, you make friends, as commanders usually remember the guy who always followed orders when the rest of the team was uselessly assaulting a hive with LMG's on a 6 on 6 with good skulks.
Sometimes commanders set waypoints by accident or forget to reset them after they become void. If you think the waypoint is a mistake use teamsay (I think thats 'u' by default) or your microphone to ask if the comm really want you to go there? If you dont get an answer withing 3 seconds assume 'yes' and get there. At least that way your following orders.
In short it's always better to follow orders that are wrong than to ignore ones that might possibly be right.
Although I see there is still a pinned topic where this is all discussed so perhaps we should let this one die ?
I don't think that that's entirely true, at startgame i usually use about 200 bullets + about 30 for the pistol before I die, and then I use more late game for hitting the offense chambers/hive.
An important point to remember is also that this rule doesn't apply if you're carrying a HMG/SG/GL, it's always best to fully load up on ammunition before you go and assault that hive, if you pick up someone's gun when they die, chances are it won't have much ammunition, and as a marine with 50 hmg bullets is completely useless it's worth asking the cmdr for a couple of ammo packs, or phasing back to base when you have a spare minute.
Ammo is the only thing that will keep you alive and functional as a marine, and without it you might as well just type /kill.
No, your brain is the only thing that will keep you alive. Ammo is for killing. If I run out of ammo and know the comm is busy I often run in to knife fades, charge down webs or knife Offence Chambers - slightly more usefull than typing kill. Sometimes I get away with this, like earlier tonight I finished of an OC, 2 DC scared away the gorge and then took out 2 RT's with only my knife.
The ammount of newbies I've munched as they filled up on ammo in base is astonishing - they had lots of ammo but it didn't keep them alive.
You think they'd learn?
Advanced players should get more ammo when there is time. Newbies should learn to conserve ammo first.
n00b=One who is new, but dosen't listen, insults, and says MY GAME ME PLAY HOW I WANT I LOVE COUNTERSTRIKE.
Nub= Stupid insult invented by the rich 12 year olds who play CS all day long, then contract a sexually transmitted disease later that evening.
pwnt=Same as nub, except even stupider
ownt= Makes more sense than pwnt, but is almost as stupid, and is vulgar
GG owned= Gracious, but sportsmany comment by the victor
GG pwnt= Good game, see "pwnt"
The point is this is stupid, if your new try to listen to your commander. You'll be helping a lot more than you realize.
It's called "humping the armory," and is an insult, for a reason. But it's just common sense.
If you have NOTHING to do, AND are standing in base on defense, then get SOME ammo. But make sure someone is watching your back. It's agonizing how often marines get eaten by a single skulk because said marines are at the armory. Get just a clip or two; a full load slows you down.
If you receive an order, IMMEDIATELY move out. Do NOT stop to get ammo for even a second. This is a prime NS sin.
If you follow orders and demonstrate enough skill to be out of ammo and still alive, a good comm will usually take notice and may give you goodies later.
I'll also assume, that being a novice, you won't have a GL/HMG. Just the stock LMG. If you do, your primary focus with these weapons should be "do not die alone." That way, someone else can fetch the weapon from your corpse. Callous? Yeah, but marine lives are free, and that HMG is expensive.
It may sound really stupid, but go download some bots and practice with both sides first. Although the bots sometimes run around like skulks with their heads chopped off (hehe) you can learn alot of usefull things from just a few hours of playing on the marine side.
Then if you really want to train yourself for alien side play, jump on the marine side, build up your base defences and spread out little pockets of turrents, resource towers, command consoles and portals, change sides and play.
Alot of people will be happy to have a newb on there team who at least has an idea of what he is doing.
A bad example of just jumping in and playin was when I was playing the aliens and there was just me agains four other marines.Someone joind and became an alien, for a second I was happy to have help then I see across the bottom of the screen:
"how do you play aliens?".

I have never seen the word "nub" used as a serious insult. In my experience, people only use it when they're joking.
Put it in Sierra\halflife\ns or whatever. You then play the game and type in console
playdemo (demoname.dem)

Read the post above you!
Experienced commanders will place the armory so you can get ammo while watching the entraces. The thing is to try NOT to turn your back while getting ammo. If there are multiple entrances? change positions once in a while, or even just look at the entrances every few seconds, or just hope that your ears are just THAT good (this last part about using only your ears you should attempt only when you are more experienced)
